Shelter From the Storm:

Last night's show at Dee's in Madison was so beautiful. I believe a ton of money was raised, the music was so impressively Nashville, a huge turn out. For me, it was my first time reconnecting my community since Tuesday morning's storm - and so many of them were there. It seemed like I couldn't turn around or turn a corner without seeing someone new. It is one thing to see a Facebook post saying someone was okay, but it was something else to see those people in the flesh and to hug them.

I honestly don't have much to say about the music - everything I heard was phenomenal and I know I probably missed more than I saw - there were so many people to hug and talk to. It was appropriate that Jon Latham acted as emcee. Not many have his ability to engage a crowd and not many can appreciate the significance of each of the musical guests.

Big thanks to Brian Wright, Sally Jaye, and Cafe Rooster Records for making this happen. Thanks to everyone for all of the hugs and kindness. And thanks to Dee's and their staff for being awesome.

I think it is important to say - even those of us who were minimally or only indirectly affected by the devastation are dealing with shock and loss. I am reminded of something I heard about the circles of grief.  Basically (and simplified), it would be in appropriate for me to unburden my feelings about this tragedy with someone who suffered a significant and tangible loss due to the storm, but it is not only okay but important for me to talk to someone who was affected in the same way or less than I was affected.  I don't know if I explained that well, but what I am trying to say is that I have no doubt that this disaster has affected me, and it is unhealthy for me to feel guilty for having those feelings.

• Our first taste of Candlelight Blue by Zografi Music. We have featured Paul Zografi's music before - for this new release he enlists the help of some musician friends to present his songs. Long time E2TG favorites Drew Kohl and Kiely Connell are among the talented players

• The new single from long-time E2TG favorite Strange Majik (aka David from The Dead Exs - for really long-time E2TG readers)
• A track from the newly released album from another long-time E2TG favorite Dean Fields

• More new music from local favorites: Kristen Englenz, Caleb Caudle, and Sad Baxter

• New E2TG submissions from Iron Mike Norton, 100 Mile House, Broads (with Millie Hirst). The Mystery Plan, Tiny Fighter, and African Head Charge.

Moving right along! 

Another fun $2 Tuesday hosted by Derek Hoke at The 5 Spot in East Nashville.  There are always a variety of wonderful musical choices in Nashville any given night, but if you ever find yourself in Nashville on a Tuesday, I can heartily recommend $2 Tuesday.  $2 cover, $2 draft beer from local brewery Yazoo. Always a great line-up of music (including host Derek Hoke - who is always fantastic), DJ Tim Hibbs spinning tunes between sets.  Last night, I caught the $2 Tuesday debut of local songwriter Bobby Corbin and his band The Corduroy Boys (at least for last night). I met Corbin several months back - I think at a $2 Tuesday maybe????, and I have seen him play solo before. I was really impressed.

Asheville band Dyado were next, and I dug their sound.

Derek Hoke was next with his regular band of Steve Latanation and Mark Robertson.

In the late spot, it was The Caprice Classics - who I think qualify as an East Nashville supergroup.  Led by Joe V. McMahan, whose name we have been mentioning quite a bit lately - most recently in association with Josh Hyde's new album, with Paul Niehaus, Jon Radford, and Adam Bednarik (The last two were part of the band Luella and the Sun with McMahan and singer Luella).  The band tore through a fiery set of obscure blues tunes and originals.

Sometimes, I wonder if people really believe my shuffles are totally random - based upon the songs I have saved to a particular playlist...   My new music playlist has 619 songs currently - with more waiting to be added - as I slowly dig myself out of the AMA week hole. So, on Tuesday, Thursday, and Fridays, I pull up that playlist and hit shuffle. The shuffle has a mind of its own, but I have decided to trust the shuffle.  Anyway, so some albums I have loaded take longer to show up in a shuffle, and some show up seemingly every day or every other day.

It's Friday - let's get to the shuffle.  These past two days, we have had some fairly long songs show up. Since my commute is more or less the same every day, longer songs means few songs. Yesterday, we had five, and today we have six. On average, we have eight or nine most days.  Again, I trust the shuffle - it all works out.  Let's go!

It's funny, I call Wednesday's "Wild" here at E2TG, but to be honest - many of our shuffles can get pretty wild - with gears shifting so fast as to cause whiplash. It's part of my concerted effort to keep E2TG from being just one thing. I love music, and I have very diverse tastes and ever more diverse curiosity. So, I am constantly seeking out all kinds of music, and I tend to judge how well I am doing by the variety of submissions I receive.

Society tends to like to put people and music and whatever into rigid boxes - I respect people, artists, bands, whatever that constantly defy expectations.

Anyway, judge for yourself, how well I am doing... here's today's Trending Thursday Shuffle!

I've been a bit slow about adding new music to my playlist.  Still toying with the idea of creating a couple of different "new music" playlists with a slightly different bent - one for Trending Tuesday and Thursday and a different one for Featured Friday.  We'll see...

Meanwhile, we are into the second half of 2018 and I have a ton of music already loaded into my "New Music" playlist - so let's shuffle!

Come on out to see Brian Milligram, Darrin Bradbury, and The Coal Men.  As an added bonus, I will be reading a short section from my novel, The Drift.  It is an early show (6-8:30) a low ($5.00) cover, and the food truck will be open if you want to eat a bite. As always in Nashville, there is a ton of stuff going on.  I hope you will make the E2TG Anniversary show - a part of your pre-weekend Summer Solstice plans.  It's the longest day of the year, so don't say you don't have time. \
