We enter the last week of the year with our final Music City Monday of 2021.

No post on Friday - New Years Eve or Monday January 3.  As I see it now, next week with be a regrouping and trying to gear up for the start of 2022. I have a lot of submissions to get to. 

As it stands, there is a lot of uncertainty in the world and in the USA. COVID, politics,  We enter 2022 with more trepidation than hope. But, I do know that there are things I can control - and I must focus on those things without ignoring the bigger picture.

Onward into another week....

Last night, I took in my first indoor live music in 13 months. At Dee's Country Cocktail Lounge, checking out Mark Robinson Band.  It was a good time.  My decision to go was based upon my vaccination status and the safety protocols which I know Dee's follows.  I fully understand those who are not yet ready to get out like that. I can report that it was great hearing live music in-person from a great band. I can also report that navigating the new reality is strange and different.  Ultimately, I am sure I will do it again, but I am still not sure about larger gatherings.

Our Featured Friday Recap continues now with songs 11-16:

11. "California Highway" by Dallas Moore

The Rain - the new album from outlaw country artist Dallas Moore is out now.  We featured one or two of the pre-release singles.  This album cut stands as evidence that this is a song album front to back.  

12. "Way Over Yonder in the Minor Key" by Cole Quest and The City Pickers

I fell in love this this song when it was released on Mermaid Avenue - a couple of decades ago????. Music by and performed by  Billy Bragg with lyrics from Woody Guthrie.  This fantastic new cover features the  late folk singers grandson backed by a band of great musicians. The album Self (En) Titled is due out this Friday.   

13. "Spirits (Having Flown)" by Coke Belda

I am unabashedly a fan of the songs of the brothers Gibb.  This is from 5: A Tribute to the Bee Gees Vol. 2 from this Pittsburgh artist.  The song was the title track to the 1979 album which was the immediate follow-up to the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack.  

14. "Juniper Jones" by David Wax Museum

The 8th album from Boston-based duo David Wax Museum is out this Friday. This is the first single, and I like it a lot. 

15. "Broken" by Whiskey Fixx

Next up, we have the new single from this relatively new country band from Detroit, Michigan. 

16. "Simulation Theory" by B. B. Palmer
 

We close with a song I just completely fell in love with - it is the recent single from this cosmic country band based in Alabama.  It is the second single from their forthcoming Krishna Country album due out later this year.  Check it out.

Featured Friday Morning Shuffle - Trios Mix

I've seen some stories in the news recently about the incredible and awful concentration of media ownership.  The sad truth in graphic form (via FrugalDad.com) is at the end of this post:

Nashville is fortunate to have a great independent radio station that supports local music and plays songs you just don't hear anywhere else.  Well, today is 6/15 or 615 which happens to be the area code of Nashville. So all day, from 6:15a.m. to 6:15p.m. they are playing nothing but music from the 615.  Grant it, they have a pretty incredible list of artists to choose from:  John Hiatt, Black Keys, Jack White, Pujol, JEFF the Brotherhood, Lambchop, Steve Winwood and Donna Summer by my estimation would all be eligible for inclusion. Plus too many others to name.


Anyway, I may post a 615 video collage/montage whatever later, and I would do a 615 shuffle, but it is featured Friday so here we go:

First up, Upstate New Yorkers, Skeleton in the Piano are up with the lead song from their 2011 album Stranger on a Damned Staircase - The Old Hound Dog is an excellent jumping off point if you are just discovering this band.  

 

Next up we have a Washington, DC band with ties to the 615.  The Riverbreak's Lead Singer and Guitarist Ryan Bailey hails from the area. Strangers on a Hot Night offers a sultry sensuality along with an expansiveness that still allows us, the listeners, to feel as if we are right there in Malcolm X Park watching the scene unfold.  It is also the lead off track from the band's album Get You Right.

And finally, more stuff from New Jersey's bluesy rock singer Jo Wymer.  We've been playing the hell out of her Living With Scars album, and she belts in legend-worthy style on Dirty Secrets.
