E2TG 5/6/2022 - Featured Friday - Belong Mix (WotEotWwY Remix)

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

It is time for another Featured Friday Playlist here at E2TG.  Today's list is slightly shorted than last week, but it is jam packed with some great music from old friends and new favorites from Nashville and around the world.  We start with a brand new song from a long-time E2TG favorite.

Featured Friday Playlist (song 1)

1. "Where Do I Belong" by Sara Syms
E2TG favorite Sara Syms will be releasing her new album the Darkest Night soon. Today, she releases the forth single from that album.
The gospel influenced “Where Do I Belong”, asks an existential question in The Darkest Light’s journey. Syms shares, "The past few years have flipped humanity on its side, inviting us all to evaluate everything. Whether it’s where you live, what you’re doing for work, who your tribe is, or even what you are doing on this planet, it’s an insecurity and vulnerability humans share. We all want to be a part of something greater than ourselves. We all want to belong."

I cannot wait for the album.  The songs released so far have exceded my already high expectations.

Produced by Ari Teitel, and supported by members of Sweet Crude, Snarky Puppy, Cha Wa, The Dirty Dozen and Naughty Professor - the album reflects the diversity of today’s New Orleans sound, everything from jazz, soul, gospel, americana and blues to the contemporary, genre-blending work of Lucinda Williams and the ambient soundscapes of Daniel Lanois.

Featured Friday Playlist (songs 2- 14)

2. "Waiting on the End of the World with You" by Alec Lang
I first met Alec Lang at one of Darrin Bradbury's songwriter nights at Dee's - it was few months after Alec moved to Nashville from Iowa.  He performed that night, and I was blown away by his songs. He released a new single today. If you've never heard Alec's music - this is as good a place as any to start.  If you already know his music, you've likely already listened to this.  I haven't made an official announcement, but look for Alec and Darrin (with a guest TBD) on June 8 6pm at The 5 Spot.
3. "The Heart of the Woman You Love" by Bobby Corbin
I met Massachusetts native Bobby Corbin before everything shut down. At first, I met him as a fellow music fan at shows by Darrin Bradbury and others. When I finally heard him perform his own songs, I was duly impressed.  He released this new single last week, and I am a fan.
4. "My Love" by Nathan Kalish
I somehow did not meet Nathan Kalish until the pandemic shut everything down, and he released Songs for Nobody. I later learned this is because he is a true road warrior. Since then, I have been fortunate enough to see him perform his songs a number of times, and I am fan.  This is his latest single.
5. "Treading Water" by Dude Safari
I believer we have featured every single this UK band has put out since their debut release "Bug Hunter" in March 2021. Just a great fun, grungy rock band.
6. "Trust Fund Troubadour" by Mick Mullin
Next up, we have a new single from Nashville native Mick Mullin.  He never minces words when singing about his town and the challenges it is facing in recent years of unrestrained growth - which doesn't always equal progress.
7. "Dial Tone" by Andrew Leahey & the Homestead
After releasing a number of singles in recent weeks and months, Andrew Leahey and the Homestead just released American Static, Vol. 2 - which solidifies their position as of one of Music City's best bands.

8. "Sleeepwalkers" by John Calvin Abney
9. "No One Had What We Have" by Levi Parham

Next up, new singles from a pair of great Oklahoma songwriters.  Several years back, I became aware of the strong bond that Nashville and Tulsa's songwriting communities share. It was during this time, that I first encountered the music of John Calvin Abney and Levi Parham. Coincidentally they both released new singles over the last couple of weeks, and it was a good reminder of how good they both are.

10. "Bun E. Carlos" by Silver Lake 66
E2TG first became aware of Portland Oregon duo Silver Lake 66 in 2019 when they released their second album Ragged Heart.  We immediately became fans.  They have a new album The Space Between Us -due out in June, and today they release the first single (and it is a banger as the kids say). Named after the originally drummer of Cheap Trick - the song really hit me hard.
11. "Child's Play" by Jack Shit
Up next, we have the first single on Devil's Tower Records by the folk/punk/rock singer-songwriter with the name I can't say on the radio... however, at first listen, I think I can play this song.
12. "Standing in the Shadows" by Pete Mancini
Killing the Old Ways - the new album by NYC singer-songwriter Pete Mancini is out now.  It was recorded in Water Valley, Mississippi (where E2TG faves Bark recently moved) and was produced by Matt Patton of Drive-by Truckers and Bronson Tew.  We have already featured at least one of the pre-release singles.
13. "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance" by A Little Farther West
A Little Farther West are an Oklahoma based husband and wife duo. They will be releasing their new album Vaya Con Dios in June. They just released this stunning cover of the Hal David and Burt Bacharach song written for the 1962 James Stewart and John Wayne film of the same name.
14. "Ukrainian National Anthem in Dub (feat. Jon Klein)" by Jah Wobble & The Ukrainians
And we close with a song for Ukraine - by the original bassist for Public Image Limited - a dub version of the Ukrainian National Anthem. A great place to stop.

But the playlist continues with a bunch more great songs- check it out.
