This morning, we send love and light to the family and friends of Justin Townes Earle who passed away yesterday at the age of 38.  I know some of my friends knew him well and worked with him over the years, and along with his family, they are especially on my mind and in my heart today....

Today, we review the next group of songs from this week's Playlist (songs 9-15):

9. "Precious Cargo" by Ben Arthur

We start off this segment of music with another new song from E2TG favorite Ben Arthur (singer-songwriter, podcaster, and award-winning host of Songcraft Presents). This is, I suppose, another track from his forth-coming new album.  The new season of his Song-Writer Podcast is streaming now most places you listen to podcasts. 

10. "Free Advice" by Cindy

Next up, we have the title track to the new album by San Francisco band Cindy. The album is out on Mount Saint Mountain Records. Cool sound. I dig it.

11. "Married Man" by Gina Sicilia

Next up, we have a brand new single from East Nashville favorite Gina Sicilia. The song was produced and co-written by Cody Dickinson. The horns and strings were recorded in Memphis, and the vocals were recorded in Nashville by Dave Coleman. Wonderful song. 

12. "Soy un Clon" by Drollery

Next up, we have some punk rock sounds from south-east Spain. The EP CAERBANNOG is the band's debut, and it falls into the punk 'n' roll genre that is gaining in popularity in Spain - with the sound and energy of punk rock with attention to musicality than some traditional punk. 

13. "In My Own City" by Pozzi

 We have been featuring Pozzi in recent Playlists, and his album Tyrant is finally out. This track really hit a note with me. Although, he is singing about his city, Los Angeles, I sometimes feel like a tourist in my city - Nashville. 

14. "Sum Total of Insolent Blank" by Santa Sprees

Santa Sprees is an Anglo-Japanese band who have nine releases under their belt. The latest, of which this is the title track, is a 43 track album, to be honest, I am still figuring this band out, but I am really digging everything I have heart. A great addition to the shuffle. 

15. "Pass By (Stripped) [Live]" by Swim

A stripped-down acoustic take on one of the singles by this New York band.  A wonderful song and a great way to close out this segment of music.

I'm going to pick up the Featured Friday Playlist recap tomorrow - because this week's list was shorter than usual, and because I forgot to write it last night...

Some good news from the Supreme Court today regarding LGBT+ rights.  I understand that there was some bad news on another front, but I have not had time to dive into that so I won't comment and just celebrate a victory for human rights.

Well, the 2019 Edition of the Magnolia Roads American Roots Hoedown IV is in the books. Over two nights, 13 acts featuring at least 54 artists performed. There was also a silent auctions which raised money for the Ben Eyestone Fund of Music Health Alliance, a COMMUnity Canvas - collaborative painting, and just a ton of fun.

Thank you to Emily Hansen of Magnolia Roads for letting me be a part of this.  I got to see old friends like The Truehearts, Chris Wilson, Don Gallardo, Mike Younger, Rich Mahan, and Lady Couch; people that I saw at previous Magnolia Roads events - like Jenny Lee West, Arkansas Dave, Bonnie Blue, and Jason Daniels; and some new folks like Bryan Haraway, FunkyJenn, and Jeff Mix.

Magnolia Roads American Roots Hoedown IV is almost here!  I hope, if you are in Nashville, you will make plans to attend. We have a great big Music City Monday shuffle.  With all the insanity coming to Nashville this week, with the NFL Draft and the Marathon, it is important to remember that and why Nashville truly is Music City USA.  There are those who want to obscure or dilute that fact, and in rebuttal, I offer up - this shuffle!

The early evening is almost as perfect as the day was. It’s a good walk to
Antonio’s. We’re walking in a loose pack. Zü is not with any one of us, but she
is not exactly avoiding us either. It’s hard to explain, but it is impossible to
misinterpret. Richard is telling me about a football game, and as usual, I’m
struggling to connect myself to the conversation. Apparently, he got into a game
on the main quad. Richard is saying something about catching a pass or
something, and I try to react with the proper amount of enthusiasm. A car is
driving slowly down the road and weaving slightly. A dog is howling on an
adjacent street, and someone somewhere is blowing their car horn. All of a
sudden, somebody grabs my arm.

I'm glad that I decided to make Monday's at E2TG Music City Monday.  It, at least, gives me one thing to look forward to about the start of another week.  Our Music City Monday Playlist on Spotify contains over 1,000 songs from Nashville and former Nashville based artists from the past and the present.  It is an eclectic mix that I think provides a good cross-section of some of the awesome music that was and is being made in Nashville - Music City USA.

Okay - well, two weeks ago, I started a new thing for Music City Monday - the shuffle is based upon a ever expanding Spotify playlist of Nashville artists past and present - trying to cover as much of the diversity of Music City's music  as I can.  Last week, I was off work - so today marks the 2nd edition of Music City Monday 2.0.  In case you want to peruse the playlist at your leisure, it is currently at 740 songs (over 44 hours of music), and it is still growing.  Anyway, here is the LINK.

I need to add an editorial comment:  I honestly wish that Spotify paid creators more for their work, and I hope that happens some time. In the meantime, I do think it is a good vehicle for hearing a ton of music and for creating playlist like this one.  However, my wish is that if you hear music you love, and you are able, go buy it.  Saving or even "downloading" an album on Spotify does not in any way equal buying the album. I think when you look at the profits that Spotify is making off the blood sweat and tears of the artists and songwriters and others who make the music, it is clearly an untenable situation.

As always, E2TG is about the music, so this shuffle like any other I post is about the music.

In any event, I think today's shuffle is a pretty nice cross-section of Nashville's music, and I look forward to bring you more in the weeks and months to come.
