Well, the 2019 Edition of the Magnolia Roads American Roots Hoedown IV is in the books. Over two nights, 13 acts featuring at least 54 artists performed. There was also a silent auctions which raised money for the Ben Eyestone Fund of Music Health Alliance, a COMMUnity Canvas - collaborative painting, and just a ton of fun.
Thank you to Emily Hansen of Magnolia Roads for letting me be a part of this. I got to see old friends like The Truehearts, Chris Wilson, Don Gallardo, Mike Younger, Rich Mahan, and Lady Couch; people that I saw at previous Magnolia Roads events - like Jenny Lee West, Arkansas Dave, Bonnie Blue, and Jason Daniels; and some new folks like Bryan Haraway, FunkyJenn, and Jeff Mix.
Until next time!
Now, we jump right into another fantastic Music City Monday shuffle! Let's do it!
"I Thought You Were Somebody" by Mary Bragg
We start things off with one of my favorite local songwriters from her latest album Violets in Camouflage. This is the follow-up to critically acclaimed Lucky Strike album. Bragg comes to Nashville by way of Georgia.
"Come On Baby" by Tomi Lunsford
Next up, we have another great track from Come on Blue by Tomi Lunsford. Lunsford is descended from legendary Appalachian folk musician and folklorist Bascom Lunsford. Tomi Lunsford was previously a member of The Lunsfords with her family.
"A Whole Within" by Andrew Adkins
Next up, we have yet another track from E2TG favorite Andrew Adkins. Adkins is a long time part of the East Nashville music community, and he continues to put out quality songs that often defy attempts at classification.
"She's Always There" by Becky Warren
We've played a few tracks from Becky Warren's new album Undesirable. This one goes back back to her previous release, the concept album War Surplus - which deals heavily with PTSD in returning veterans.
"What's the Beef?" by Microwave Mountain
Next up, we have a track from Sick Licks by one of Nashville's best bands - Microwave Mountain. I got to hang a little bit with Jamie Timm over the weekend.
"It's All Changed (Live)" by Royal Court of China
Going back a few years, we have a taste of the Nashville music scene that I first got into about 30 years ago. Royal Court of China - which formed out of the remains of a thrash band called The Enemy. This live recording comes from the Return to Elliston Square Live album from a 2008 release show for the essential Nashville 80s Rock compilation Return to Elliston Square. In the audio at the end of the song, singer Joe Blanton makes a reference to a song by Cloverbottom called Anarchy in Music City.
"In the Service of the King" by Tom Mason
Tom Mason was a simple (and insanely talented musician and songwriter) when he was struck with pirate fever. He made this album, The Blue Buccaneer, and the rest was history. He now plays the highest quality pirate songs with his band named for this album. This is one of his most popular songs. If you ever get a chance to see Tom Mason and the Blue Buccaneers live - make sure you go!
"We're All Alright" by J. Marco
Next up, we have Nashville rock singer-songwriter J. Marco from his 2017 album Days of Surrender. There are a lot of great folk/country singer-songwriters in Nashville (and a lot of great ones), I love the fact that J. Marco's music is rock with out a folk or country angle (I will say generally in case I'm forgetting something along those lines that he has done).
"Money Road" by Rosanne Cash
Rosanne Cash was born in Memphis and has a long history with New York City, but I will forever claim her for Nashville. This is from her excellent 2014 album The River and the Thread.
"Western Theme/Precious Times (Live)" by Walk the West
Walk the West just recently played their first show in over a decade with an all-star line-up of guests attempting the fill the gaping hole left by the late Paul Kirby. I am so bummed, I had to miss that show, but from all indications it was out of this world good. This is a live recording - which I think is from that Return to Elliston Square live show, but I may be wrong. This included on the expanded edition of their self-titled debut album. Walk the West were one of my favorite bands to see live back in the day. They combined western music with fast paced rock n roll.
"Here in the Sequoias" by Jason Ringenberg
Talking about one of my favorite bands to see back in the day. Jason Ringenberg is definitely an elder statesman when in comes to Nashville's underground rock scene. That is why it is so gratifying that his latest album Stand Tall is deservedly receiving such great attention. The album boasts some of Ringenberg's best songs delivered with a fervor - one might not expect nearly 40 years on.
"Dreamer's Heart" by Erica Blinn
We close with another of my favorite songwriters and performers. Erica Blinn is also getting a lot a well-deserved attention these days. I love to see her perform whether she is fronting her own band or backing other artists. This is a track from her 2018 album Better Than Gold.
