Onward and upward.  It is Wednesday, and that is the day things tend to get "wild" at E2TG. I call it Wild Wednesday - just because the shuffle comes from all of songs saved to my phone.  That means you might hear recent music that we have been featuring, past featured music, songs from my personal collection, random music files I got through various sources, plus some songs from the earliest days of E2TG, and sometimes songs that I have no clue how they came to be in my possession.   Let's jump right in!

Happy New Year!  I am back to blogging after an extended holiday. 

ICYMI - I made the Bands and Artists of the Year announcement late last week.  HERE is the link to that post.

If you are going to be in Nashville on Sunday January 14 (which happens to be my birthday), E2TG will be hosting a show at The Local (formerly known as The Country) - music starts at 8:00.

On the bill will be Conrad y Skordalia, Nelson  Zimmerman and Quinn (featuring Sean Quinn), and Danny Henry (who will be en route from Connecticut to California). It should be a great night of music, and I hope to see you there.  Here is the event link from Facebook.

Now I am Ready to kick into the new year. I have a ton of new music queued up, and I have some ideas for some changes for 2018.  In the meantime, I am going ease into the new year with three days of "Wild" shuffles of all the songs on my phone at present.

I'm befuddled and bewildered... first of all, my bluetooth kept crashing on my phone.  I'm hoping the situation resolves itself because I have already restarted my phone, and that is about the extent of my technical knowledge....

Anyway, I powered through today's shuffle - from all the songs on my phone. The shuffle brought up some gems from the depth of my playlist along with some slightly more recent faves.

I'm going to skip the "Earies" today. I need to regroup and get a running list going so I am don't confuse myself.

Anyway - some upcoming events I wanted to clue you into... as always, this is not comprehensive and just off the top of my head -so sorry for any omissions....

Tonight: Fats Kaplin hosts the early show at The 5 Spot. His shows are always amazing. I had to miss last week, but I will be there tonight.  After that, the incredible Collins Family will be hosting their second annual Christmas Extravaganza also at The 5 Spot. Some pretty awesome guests plus Smoking Flowers all doing holiday tunes.  Benefits for that show are going to Standing Rock.

Friday: As always, Tim Carroll Rock n Roll Happy Hour goes down at The 5 Spot. If you've never been, go! If you've been, well, then I don't need to tell you.  A bit later Nathan Dohse of AGD Entertainment will be at The Country for his first live show in a very long time.  Closing the night will be one of my faves Patrick Kinsley and A Fistful of Dollars.

Saturday: The 11th Annual Get Behind the Mule - Tom Waits tribute and benefit for Second Harvest Food Bank is at The 5 Spot. Some awesome guests this year. Mary Sack puts on a a great show.

Sunday:  Don Gallardo will be opening for SHEL at 3rd and Lindsley for the long running Nashville Sunday Night show and broadcast.  A bit of trivia - SHEL was the band that was playing at The 5 Spot right after I met Darrin Bradbury in person for the very first time.

Happy Thursday... sending good thoughts to everyone in the path of Hurricane Matthew. And especially thinking about those who have lost life and property in the Caribbean.

Congratulations to WXNA-LP Nashville for finishing second to Lightning 100 in the Nashville Scene Readers Poll for Best Radio Station.  A remarkable achievement for a low power station that has only been on the air for 4 month.  Super proud to play a small part in the station, but props go out to our super hard working and dedicated Board and our fearless leader Heather Lose. This achievement is a testament to the impact the station has already had on the community.

Well, the Buck N Stuff show was the epic throw down that I expected. My favorite moment was the Buck Owens cover that they performed. #BuckNStuff are the absolute best. They announced last night that they will be playing The 5 Spot for New Years Eve.  Make your plans now.  2017 is sure to be the Year of Buck N Stuff.

It is Thursday when we throw things back, and I think we have a really awesome shuffle today... shall we?

Well, I am back after an extended weekend - some much needed time with my daughter.

Let's see... so Lady Gaga is keeping it real by playing a "dive bar" tour which tonight will be my favorite joint - The 5 Spot. And by keeping it real, I mean shutting the place down for two nights, barricading streets, buses, trucks, (and from what I hear) a ton of gear to play two songs tonight.  Cool, cool..

Anyway, I will be across the river at The Basement for the fourth ever show by Buck N Stuff.  Regular readers will recall that Buck N Stuff is THE best Buck Owens tribute band that I have ever seen.  Okay, they are the only Buck Owens tribute band I have ever seen, but I'd be willing to bet that if I had seen others, they would still be the best. Breathing new life into Buck's great songs, it is sure to be a wild, fun, totally awesome experience. 8:30pm.  My prediction: Buck N Stuff will melt faces, reassemble faces from the melted remains, and then melt faces once again.

Now, it is Wednesday and we are about to get "Wild"

I need to report on last night's music.  Scott Miller at The 5 Spot was so far beyond amazing.  He was accompanied by Bryn Davies on upright bass.  Miller was a member of the Knoxville band, The V-Roys.  He (fairly) recently moved to Virginia to help tend to his parents and their cattle. His songs are moving and rocking and touching. His stage presence is humorous.  Bryn Davies is brilliant!

After that I walked over to The Basement East for the second in a series of Ryan Adams album tributes by some East Nashville artists.  It was a really entertaining show.  Once again, Jon Latham lead the band (which included Andrew Leheay, Rob Crowell (Deertick) and others) and introduced the guest (Allen Thompson, Peyton Parker, Sean Quinn, Carolina Story, Brian Ritchey, and many more).  Plus some cool folks did some non-album R.A. songs before the album part of the show including the always awesome Don Gallardo.  Thanks to a particular drummer friend for the ride back to my car.


Just before I headed to work this morning, I received word that a friend, who I have known for almost my entire life, had passed away.  This was heavy on my mind as I drove and walked to work and listened to the following songs... It is throwback Thursday.

Robyn Hitchcock and Bobby Bare Jr. walk into a bar, and the best damned Booker T and the MGs cover band you ever heard is on stage... what? No, it's not the set up for a joke... it is just Tuesday night in East Nashville. Specifically $2 Tuesday at The 5 Spot.  As per usual, it was a great night of music up and down the bill that included Henry Wagons, Allen Thompson (who filled in for Derek Hoke who is on tour), Francis and the Foundation, Amber Farris with the late night slot filled by the the aforementioned Booker T cover band - Time is Tight lead by drummer Jerry Pendecost. $2 admission, $2 Yazoo drafts all night!

Oh and a big shout out to Eric who hosts Gilded Splinters on WXNA.  He plays really awesome New Orleans music every Tuesday from 7-9pm.  Eric filled in for Sue and I this past Saturday and he kind of dedicated his show to us by making musical connections. I don't know if they were aided by cocktails, but if so, I am assuming it was Hurricanes.  (but not on the air on in the studio...) :-)

It is mid-week... when things get wild here at E2TG. Let's see where the shuffle takes us...

Thursday Morning Music Shuffle - Retractable Redaction Mix

CORRECTION:  In a previous post, we stated that Justin Bieber and The Jonas Brothers founded The Quarrymen, the band that later became The Beatles.  This was not correct.  As many of you wrote in to tell us, Justin Bieber joined after the name change and was never a member of The Quarrymen. (source: wikipedia). Ear to the Ground regrets this error.

Got a full plate today, so let's get to the Shuffle:


First up, lets get our 90s Power Pop groove on with Velvet Crush a Rhode Island band.  Today's song is Weird Summer which comes from their 1994 Matthew Sweet produced, Teenage Symphonies to God album.

The next track is from an upcoming mixtape called, The Wild, The Innocent and the TV Shuffle. It's a song called, I Wonder Who She's Kissing Now from the San Diego based duo, TV Girl.

Next is a live version of classic UK punk song, Ever Fallen In Love (With Someone You Shouldn't've) by The Buzzcocks from their second album, Love Bites. People from my generation may recognize the song which was covered by Fine Young Cannibals.

The Black Jesuses are a side project of members of the band The Parlor Mob.  Roll Call Blues is today's track from that project.(h/t and link to Popa's Tunes)

Finally, we have a track from a compilation called, Generations I: a Punk Look at Human Rights.  It's called The Alien Song, and it features The Red Aunts along with punk goddess, Exene Cervenka (as Exene Cervenkova).
