Okay - so the blog post - subtitle "Not Sure Anymore" isn't really some great existential cry for help or anything. I was just thinking about how there are certain "truths" from the pre-COVID times that I am now questioning. Again, not necessarily big "T" truths - but maybe those also. 

There was a way of life that existed for me (and I know others) before last year that is gone.  It is, I think, important to recognize that as the vaccine rollout (albeit disjointedly) ramps up and as COVID numbers come down (at least here and for now), and we begin to think about the new normal. I am very much looking forward to that time, but for me, I have to frame it as something new - not as a return to something that used to exist.  As for what that new normal will be or how it will differ from what came before... well, I'm not sure anymore...

First up today, we have a track from the recent  EP by this singer-songwriter from Northhampton, Massachusetts. Delamater also leads and writes songs for the band Delawater.

18. "Backwards" by Kid Hastings

Next up, we have a single from the forthcoming EP by this singer-songwriter from LA.

19. "Barfight" by Afronaut

Next up, we have an exciting track from the debut EP by this band from Soweto, South Africa.  The band brings a diverse group of influences into this unique blend of music.

20. "Surkov's Dream" by Nick Hudson

We last caught up with Nick Hudson as part of the UK band The Academy of Sun.  This is the first single from his forthcoming solo album.  

21. "Sugar Rush" by Harri Larkin

Next up, a fun track from this alt pop funk trio of Sheffield UK. It is the first single from the forthcoming EP (the first of 2 planned EPs in the works.). A great sound. 

22. "Ain't It Hard To Be" by AndromedanMan
 

And we close this segment of music with an artist who comes to us from 2.5 million light years away.  The bio on this submission made me listen. The music kept my attention.  A great way to close out this segment of music.

First up today, we revisit this 2017 release from this most interesting Japanese band.  I could not find a video for this track so I picked one for their single "Awful Pop Song".

"Slap It On" by Jefferson Ross (from Live at Hillbilly Haiku - 2017)

Also from 2017, this live album introduced me to Georgia (and former Nashville) songwriter and singer Jefferson Ross.  A wonderful song about painting and great painters from history to you and I. 

"The Weeping Souls (Alain Johannes remix)" by Jonny Polonsky (single - 2020)

We got to know L.A. based singer-songwriter Jonny Polonsky over the last year, and this August release featured a remix by Alain Johannes (Chris Cornell, Arctic Monkeys, PJ Harvey, and more). 


"Glaring Screens" by Plastic Barricades (from Self-Theories - 2020)

Next, we have a track from a November release by this duo based between London and Paris. 



"We Went to the Zoo" by Jovi Skyler (from Jovi Skyler EP - 2020)

And, we close this shuffle with a track from this spring 2020 release by this singer-songwriter who is based in Sydney. A wonderful track and one that slipped past me last year.

So - this is the second to the last post of 2020. I don't think anyone needs to recap what a horrible year this has been.  I certainly know that things will not magically get better at Midnight on January 1, but I do hope that arbitrary milestone does prove to mark the beginning of a new phase. 

Tomorrow, I will wrap up some unfinished business from this year and then I will be ready to move forward - bringing only the lessons learned, the goodness and light, and the memories of those lost with me (okay - maybe I will bring more, but you get my meaning).

We've reached the penultimate recap post of this extended Featured Friday Playlist.  Today we have songs 48-54:

48. "Song for Ella" by Cap'n Marble 

Our second time featuring this indie pop duo from Southern California. I love this song. 

49. "So Far From Home" by BUN

Next up, we have the sixth single in eight months from Belgian artist BUN. Brecht - the musician behind BUN started in an instrumental post-metal band called Miava which had developed a good following. Unfortunately, the band's drummer and Brecht's best friend was killed in a hit and run accident. Brecht eventually returned as BUN - as a project to celebrate life. This is my first listen and I dig it. 

50. "Area 51"  by The Star Prairie Project

Next up, we have our second Featured track from Nolen R. Chew Jr. from Star Prairie, Wisconsin who collaborates with musicians and producers from LA to London as The Star Prairie Project. 

51. "Yellowed Pages" by Glenn Morrow's Cry for Help

Next up, we have the lead track from the second album (appropriately named '2') from this New Jersey based band.  This track laments the loss of intimacy of the modern age of communication. 

52. "Gwir" by Tacsidermi

A lot of interesting music coming our way from Wales. This duo came to fruition during and because of the lock down. 

53. "Social Distancing" by Fear Rua

Next up, we have a track from Rhode Island based experimental artist Dylan Murphy aka Fear Rua.  Great ambient, psychedelic vibe. Very cool. 

54. "Fall Away" by Glostik Willy

And we close this segment of music with the new single from Indiana-based hippy metal band Glostik Willy.  I am going to admit I don't really know what hippy metal is - I do know that heavy metal originally emerged from the hippy subculture so... anyway, this is a cool song and a nice way to close out another diverse segment of music.

Muddling through... Interesting phrase... basically to do a somewhat decent job either with little effort or with little planning or without the proper tools. To me these are different concepts. Maybe I expend a great effort, but I don't plan and I don't have the tools I need. Or maybe, I plan but then don't extend the effort.  Or I plan and extend effort but don't have the proper tools... I muddle through and what needs to get done gets done - maybe in a half-assed kind of way. 

I don't think I like the expression, to be honest, especially in the context of 2020. To me it is too judgmental (or maybe that is just what I am reading into it). I think many of us are doing amazing work just staying somewhat sane and not completely falling apart. By pre-COVID standards - maybe we aren't excelling, but I am here to say, that's okay. 

So, I am getting through... but I am not going to say I am muddling through.  Onward!

11. "Talk to Me" by John Lensing

First up today, we have a really cool track from this singer-songwriter currently based in Denver. His music has elements of alt-folk and bedroom pop. It is rich and lovely. I dig it. 

12. "68th in Orbit" by Mt. Doubt

Next up, we have a track from the brand new album, Doubtlands by this Edinburgh-based band. This is their third album - with the sound evolving to this album which makes a powerful statement of band arriving. 

13. "September" by Lydia Loveless; Laura Jane Grace

One that I'm playing just because I want to... we recently featured Lydia Loveless playing with our friend Benchmarks. Now, she has released Daughter - her new album, and it is amazing.  On this track, she is joined by Against Me!'s Laura Jane Grace.  The intersection of punk and roots music which has been happening in the Mid-West for many years, is one of the most exciting things happening in music. Bands and artists like Two Cow Garage, Austin Lucas, and Lydia Loveless have an authenticity in both worlds and are creating memorable and important music. 

14. "Dig Deep" by Magnolia Bayou

We close out this segment of music with a track from Strange Place - the new album by Southern Mississippi based rock band Magnolia Bayou.  They are heirs to the long tradition of great music emerging from the swamps and bayous of that part of the Deep South.

Well, it's Monday, the world is screw-up, life is hard, and hope is fleeting. But, it's December, and time for the 3rd Annual E2TG "Earie" Awards.  "The Earies, they sound strange but they're really not".

For the uninitiated, the "Earie" awards are my annual chance to give kudos to the musicians and others who made my year better. Unlike, the Brand X awards, at the Earies, we don't mess around with nominees, our categories are... um... non-standard, and the eligibility period is liquid and determined solely by me.

As we did last year, we are going to embed many of the awards into the shuffles.  The awards will continue throughout December and culminate in the awarding of the "Golden Earie" awards for band(s) and artist(s) of the year.

Went to the Tyler Bryant and The Shakedown CD Release show last night.  I had seen them once a couple of years ago - at a show I covered for No Depression.  Last night's show was impressive. Great performances, great songs, high energy, and engaging.   Thanks Mary!

Well, I ended up downloading a new music player app last night and messed around with it when I should have been sleeping.  So far, it seems like I will like it. Still dealing with the issue of the other music player not deleting songs.  I may have discovered why, though, the songs are all stored on a memory card, and apparently with the OS my phone has - you have to give specific permission to an app to allow it to delete from a memory card. At least with my new player, I got a message explaining this - the other one would just appear to delete the file only to have it reappear like magic.

Long story, a little less long, I have to do some work deleting previously played songs, and until then, there is a good chance some songs will repeat. But it will all work itself out.  The only other drawback I see on this music player is that the "Recently Played" listing is not a chronological list of recently played songs - which I like for compiling my blog post. But, you can scroll back through the songs recently played without it shuffling everything again.  On the plus side, the song info shows up on my car stereo when I play the music through my blue tooth interface!

Enough about the logistics of E2TG, let's get to the music!  By the way, I am off work tomorrow so this is likely the final shuffle of the week.

Once again, I find myself feeling overwhelmed by the world and "humankind's inhumanity to fellow humans"... and I am also overwhelmed by the divides we see - especially (as far as I can tell) in this country - between people. I see all sorts of layers and causes and symptoms of this problem, but for right now, I don't see any or much hope of a solution.

Does social media exacerbate the problem or merely amplify it?  Comment sections on any even vaguely political post are depressing as hell.  And, just about anything and everything is at least potentially political.  Food, sports, weather, fast food cups, innocuous holiday greetings... all political and by definition divisive in these times. And I want to blame it all on the OTHER side- I really do... but... THE OTHER SIDE is part of the problem.  Everything seems to viewed as a one or the other, all or nothing proposition.  Shop a particular store, well, you must be (fill in the blank).  Watch a particular sport... you get the idea. 

I don't feel like I know a whole lot about much of anything, but in my life, I have ascertained that almost everything is more complex than it seems to be... especially if people are involved. I guess it is a sort of human nature to put people or things into categories... good, evil, progressive, conservative, pro, anti... people rarely ever fit neatly into boxes we design - especially if there are only ever two choices. 

The point I am trying to make is that this either/or thinking tends to back people into a corner. It says you can't be this one thing without being all these other things which get conflated with that one thing. Faced with that, people dig in and end up feeling the need to support something that they might otherwise never support. 

I already said, I don't see a solution in sight - at least not an easy one. All I know to do is to watch and check myself when I find myself exhibiting this either/or mentality or projecting all sorts of things onto people because of one particular aspect of who they are. 

That and music (although that can and has been politicized)... for me music heals a part of me that is damaged and in pain.  For me it is certain songs, artists, styles of music.  For someone else, it may be something else (that I may not like or understand) and that is okay. If music (any music) does that for someone - then who the hell am I to criticize that?

It's a misty, overcast raining Monday in Nashville.   And the world is a harsh and bitter place sometimes.  Here's some music that helped make it a little better this morning for me....

Another week... the last full week of October. A rainy, gloomy day in Nashville with cooler weather in the forecast.  I've been running behind all day, but I got a few minutes to write this.

Looks like a busy week for live music in Nashville... including Saturday at Grimey's Rocktoberfest to benefit WXNA.  Details to follow. 

Here we go with our Monday shuffle - for now, we are shuffling from the "New Music" playlist... trying to get through as many of those songs as we can before the end of the year.

Today, I have a very heavy heart about the mass shooting in Las Vegas.  That it occurred at a music concert makes it doubly difficult. At this point, I do not know all of the facts about this shooting - and even if I did, I do not claim to have all of the answers about these recurring tragedies. I have beliefs and I know others have different beliefs when it comes to the various issues that surround situations like this. My wish is that we could, as a nation, step up and say, this is a horrible thing and we must commit to do whatever we can to prevent or at least minimize the chance of this happening again. And from there, we should all have an open mind and respectfully discuss the various issues and ideas and find where we can reach common ground.  Too often, we begin with division and polarization and things go downhill from there. 

Our leaders, who we elect to serve us, must be help accountable... they are the ones that must make the hard choices.  They need to be making the best choices for the nation as a whole -  not the best choices for the billion dollar industries and individuals who funnel money their way. (side note: Citizen United - Orwellian Doublespeak, if I've ever heard it, must be overturned)

Is it too soon after the tragedy to have these conversations? Maybe. But these events seem to happening so often lately that it is always too soon. 

Right now, I will leave it at this:  as in most issues, there are more sides than A or B - there are more than two possible solutions to consider.  It is not us vs. them - it is us vs. us, and it should be us with us. 

Sending love to Las Vegas and all who are hurting or angry or scared or confused. We, as a nation, can do better and we must do better. Again, I do not know all of facts about this shooting - and as is usually the case, there are many different issues at work here. I do believe that we are a resourceful people who can solve the underlying issues. The question is, will we?

As I always do, I turn to music as a source of healing and a shelter from the storms of the world.

On Monday, we usually feature Nashville connected songs, however, due to the large number of "New Music" songs and the rapid approach of the end of the year, I have decided that for 4 of the 5 days for at least the next month, I am going to shuffle from the new music playlist.  Wednesday will be Wild Wednesday - but every other day will feature "new music" 

Besides, there is a  bunch of Nashville-based music in the "new music" playlist - and some of those came up today.

To be perfectly honest, I have been a crappy mood most of this week - maybe it is post-eclipse let down or mercury retrograde or something else. Fortunately, I have lived with my brain for long enough to know that this feeling will pass, and to take anything my brain tries to tell me with at least one grain of salt.

The world is a mess.  Time, motivation, and inspiration rarely seem to be in alignment (meaning, I will be inspired and/or motivated to do something when I am busy with some obligation and then when I have some free time - the inspiration and motivation cannot be found). Right now, I'm just battling through and putting one foot in front of the other.

Anyway, it is Friday.  On Friday, we play songs from the "New Music" playlist... I added over 150 songs to that playlist last night (about a third from one album!).  The playlist is up near 500 songs and it may be time for a couple of weeks of just "New Music" shuffles to make some headway.  Today, only one of those 150+ additions made it into the shuffle - along with some fairly recent additions and some that have been hanging around for a bit.  All in all, a really cool shuffle... enjoy!

Monday - Music City Monday featuring all music connected to Nashville. Old stuff, new stuff, loose connections, maybe some connections that exist only in my head...

Tuesday - Trending Tuesday featuring songs from the "New Music" playlist.  Mostly music submitted to me - occasionally a cool newish release that I just want to highlight.  "New" is relative - although I will be occasionally taking out lingering songs that are over a year old. That being said, if it's relatively new and new to me, I will also add stuff a year or so old (or older in special cases). It is what it is okay?

Wednesday - Wild Wednesday - we go hog wild and shuffle up all the songs stored by my device. New, old, really old, well-known, obscure, weird, normal - it's all possible.

Thursday - Topical Thursday - we shuffle off a of pre-selected "Topic" playlist. For a few months, we had a unexplained topic built around the current events of the world (loosely or tightly connected), since May we have been shuffling up a special E2TG anniversary playlist - featuring one song each from 250 or so artists who have been featured in some way over the six years of our existence as a blog. This topic will continue until it changes.

For the second day in a row, we have a song to premiere.  This one comes from singer-songwriter Jefferson Ross, who is based in Savannah, Georgia - but Nashville is all over this track.  The song is a live recording from the brand new album Live at Hillbilly Haiku. The album is produce and features the work of noted Nashville musician Thomm Jutz. Hillbilly Haiku is a House Concert series run by Rick and Denise Williams in nearby Lebanon, Tennessee.  The awesome Fats Kaplin and Kristie Rose are next up at Hillbilly Haiku - on Saturday June 24!)

Jefferson Ross is a former Nashville resident. He was a staff songwriter and a noted session player and road musician.  He is also a painter. He brings a life of experiences to his music which is distinctly Southern,
