Thanks to Blister in the Sun this debut album the album went platinum and finally hit the Billboard charts in 1991 - 9 years after its release. But, in my hometown and the time, only a few of us knew about it and it hit me hard - putting words and music to the raging storm of emotions and chemicals going on in my adolescent brain and body.

Candy Apple and The Buddies (aka The Buddies) were/are a group featuring members of Smoking Flowers, Justin and the Cosmics, Pale Blue Dot, Welcome to Ashley, and Black Vincent. Here they are doing the Eddie Cochran song.

A wonderful song from songwriter and poet Luke Powers. I had the pleasure of performing on a spoken word night with him, the late David Olney, Rod Picott, and Rebecca Weiner Tompkins.

"Honey and Sugar" by Lori Kelley (from Under Stars and Storms)

Lori Kelley is a D.C. area transplant, but she has been here several years now. We was among the first group of people I met when I kind of emerged from the shadows into the Nashville music scene. She was a big part of the wonderful Sunday night shows at Bobby's Idle Hour (Eastside Invasion). She is a wonderful songwriter, and this is her most recent release.

I wanted to bring to your attention an upcoming show that might otherwise slip under your radar.  If you are in Nashville and free this coming Sunday (July 22), I recommend you head to Dee's Country Cocktail Lounge in Madison around 7pm.  Joe Goodkin (a Chicago songwriter who we have featured on E2TG) will be making a rare Nashville appearance, and some of my favorite Nashville songwriters are joining him (Joe Nolan, Tom Schreck, and Connor Rand).  I want to make sure I take maximum credit for my small role (with minimal effort) in getting these folks together for this show.  I think it will be a good one.

On to our "Wild Wednesday" shuffle:

The music in my phone's memory is a hodge podge of all sorts of things:  current and past E2TG featured artists/bands, older (and more recent) albums from my personal collection, music I have downloaded for various sources - just for fun, music given to me by various people that was not specifically intended to be featured on E2TG, and maybe some other things.   On Wednesdays, I hit shuffle on all those songs and see what comes up.  It's really interesting (to me at least) in that each shuffle has it's own "personality" or flavor. And, I never know what is going to come up.  I call Wednesday's "Wild" not because the list of songs is necessarily wildly eclectic (just sometimes) but because each shuffle is like a wildcard - you never know what it will be.

Hey all, I am short on time so my comments will be brief.  But, I am unveiling a new feature today.  Theme Thursday. Each Thursday I will shuffle songs especially selected for a theme which will change monthly.  I am not going to reveal the theme and I do need to say that in some cases the content of the songs fits the theme and sometimes it is just the title phrase which may or may not be interpreted as intended in the song. I don't know how else to explain that. Basically, in some cases, I selected the song for the theme based solely upon a possible interpretation of the title (which may or may not be the intended interpretation).  In any event, if you figure out the theme - please know that any songs inclusion does not imply the artists intent or agreement with my theme topic). Whew!  It will all be clear as we go on, or it will not.

It was one of those early shows at The 5 Spot in East Nashville where you could have put together one hell of an all-star band just from the people in attendance. But, truth be told, there was no need for that because David Olney was on the stage, and he was, as I have come to expect, out of this world. Where else could you hear The Bee Gees and Samuel Taylor Coleridge in the same set? Backed by Ward Stout, Justin Amaral, and Daniel Seymour, it was captivating and amazing.  Olney has one more Wednesday to go in his month long residency, and I highly recommend your attendence next week if at all possible.

The week rolls on, and suddenly, we find ourselves at Thursday.  This week we throw things back with an interesting collection of songs... check it out...

Good times last night.  MadDonna's hosted Jon Latham, Bill Eberle, and Chris Watts and his band.  Pretty amazing night of Nashville music.  Jon is playing some fairly new songs of late which are amazing, and Bill Eberle played some really, really new songs that were mind-blowingly good.

Throwback Thursday Morning Shuffle - Tommy Said So Mix

I have a lot on my mind, and I kind of feel an extended non-shuffle post coming on - when I have the time. 

If you have not done so, I recommend watching the video of Michael Stipe singing "The Man Who Sold the World" on Fallon. 

In short, the thoughts in mind are about the concept of limitations vs. the infinite.  They are about the road to peace that is sometimes harder to walk but ultimately worth the extra effort. About the music "industry" and the value of art.  About the "latest next big thing" vs. the really cool thing that may or may not someday be the "latest next big thing" but regardless is pretty amazing right in this moment. 

It's all kind of jumbled in my mind, and for me the only way to unjumble it (or at least the best way) is for me to write it all down.  Anyway, some jumbled thoughts may be coming.

Facebook controls what posts you see and even sometimes what pages you "like". Ah, Thursday!

Last night was the opening night of the Jason Ringenberg residency at The 5 Spot in East Nashville.  Ringenberg is the Jason from Jason and the Scorchers (the seminal Nashville band beginning in the early 1980s).  He is also the Jason from Farmer Jason (host of a PBS kids show and creator of albums for children).  His special guest for week 1 was Webb Wilder (another quintessential figure on the 80s Nashville music scene).

Playing to a pretty packed house, Ringenberg and Wilder really seemed to be enjoying themselves. Jason opened with "Halcyon Times" - the title track from a Scorchers album before turning the stage over to Webb Wilder who moved through a set that encompassed his long career. Including, classic Webb Wilder songs like "How Long Can She Last" and "Human Cannonball". 

Ringenberg's set included several classic Scorcher's songs as well as songs from his solo albums, and a cover of "Trail of Tears" by the great Georgia band, Guadalcanal Diary. 

Wilder then joined Ringenberg to close out the night by each singing a song by the other.  Jason sang, "Sitting Pretty" from 1991's Doo Dad and Webb sang "Shop it Around" from the first full-length Scorchers album Lost and Found.  They then performed a Farmer Jason song before closing the evening with a really awesome version of Buddy Holly's "Rave On".

Tonight, I am going to check out Joey Kneiser and his band at The East Room.  His new album, The Wildness is getting rave reviews.

The unique and wonderful space known as The Building will be closing soon.  Over the years, it has provided a home for many of East Nashville's finest songwriters and creative people. Right now, a series of "farewell" shows are happening there.  To judge by last night's Open Road Monday, this is not a wake but a celebration of all that has happened in the years that The Building has been opened.

A large crowd gathered for featured acts Darrin Bradbury (with Megan Palmer) and Daniel Lawrence Walker and his band.  I stuck around for the open mic and saw a couple of guys whose names I did not catch, Yosi Mesbah, Dave Pahanish, and Tom Schreck.  It was a great night of some of the best of what Nashville does. 

The Building will be missed, and I hope other places open up to fill the void that will be left when it closes.

I'm doing a super quick mix today, but for good reason, I used my lunch hour to walk a couple of blocks to see legendary (I mean LEGENDARY) sax man Bobby Keys with his excellent band that includes former Georgia Satellite and current leader of Homemade Sin and member of The Bluefields Dan Baird. I only had time to stay for the first part, but they ripped through a set that included a few Stones songs, a George Harrison number, and Joe Cocker's version of the Box Tops' song.  All of which featured Mr. Keys in their original versions.

Monday Morning Music Shuffle - Ugly Moon Mix

Greetings.  After an extended Holiday weekend, Ear to the Ground is back with another slam, bang mix of music. During the recess, I've been busy adding songs to our rotating playlist from which the Morning Pre-Shuffle and Shuffle are drawn.

Today, we have a pretty decent mixture of old and new music which covers a variety of musical styles and genres.  Hope you enjoy it.  The Pre-shuffle kicks off right after the JUMP

Friday Morning Music Shuffle - Camp Crystal Lake Mix

 The songs (not the recordings) in today's shuffle are an average of 44 years old.  Our set includes two classics from my youth and two recent covers of songs from before my youth.


Sex and Dying in High Society by X is from their debut Los Angeles.  "So you marry your daddy

Love in Vain performed here by our good friends You & Me is a cover of a 1937 Robert Johnson song which was also covered by The Stones on Let It Bleed.  "Well I followed her to the station

The Ocean performed here by Laura Veirs and her husband Tucker Martine (as Mount Analog) is a cover of the Led Zeppelin song from House of the Holy. Trivia: Tucker Martine (like my friend Rex Silo moved from Nashville to Boulder, Colorado). "Singing in the sunshine, laughing in the rain.

Monday Morning Music Shuffle - %^#%^&# DST Mix

Man, I'm dragging today - even though I left the Basement after The Amboy's set (more later on this), and I'm totally blaming this on the beginning of Daylight Savings Time this past weekend.  For those you who live in areas which do not have Daylight Savings Time (aka the sane world), every spring we set our clocks ahead one hour in the spring and then set them back in the fall.  Inevitably, it takes my body several days to get used to this change, and the fact that I'm waking up now while it is still pitch dark doesn't help.  The only good part is having an extra hour of daylight in the afternoon, but it's at best an antiquated idea and more precisely a dumb idea...

This morning's shuffle includes some older songs ahead of tonight's scheduled addition of new songs to the MP3 player. 

   

(Webb Wilder - Hybrid Vigor (1990) - Amazon.com)

Webb Wilder is the last of the full-grown men.  He is an electrifying artist and the idol of idle youth.  He has a credo ("Work hard, rock hard, eat hard, sleep hard, grow big, wear glasses if you need 'em!").  Born in Hattiesburg, Mississippi - he has been a fixture on the Nashville music scene since I formative years.  Back in the day, I got to see Webb Wilder and his band the Beatnecks several times at clubs in Nashville and the surrounding towns and villages. Today's track, Safe Side (amazon lists the song as On the Safeside), comes from the 1990 major label (Island) release Hybrid Vigor.

 

 

(Violent Femmes - Violent Femmes (1982) - Amazon.com)

I wrote about Violent Femmes the other day when I was talking about hearing the band's most famous song, Blister in the Sun in a few different commercials.  That song as well as today's track, Kiss Off , comes off of the band's 1992 self-titled debut album.  The song (as well as the whole album) are filled with adolescent rage, snottiness and desire.

Did I happen to mention that I'm impressed?"

Violent Femmes were not a punk band, but definitely are punk-influenced in attitude and energy.

Live were and apparently soon will be again (with a new lead singer) an alternative rock band from York, PA. Their debut album, Mental Jewelry, was produced by Jerry Harrison of Talking Heads fame who coincidently also produced one of the Violent Femmes' albums.

Thursday Morning Music Shuffle - Angels Fall Like Rain Mix

Good morning - walk up the hill was in a pissing rain... Last night, I heard a Pogues' song in a commercial for a mini-van and recently (and again) I've heard the Violent Femmes' ode to teen-aged hormones being used to hawk (computers, tacos what's next bed linens and laundry and stain removers?)

Honestly coincidentally, after musing on those things, this delicious mix of classic songs from my youth and young adulthood came up on my morning shuffle:

Richard Butler (along with Bryan Ferry) was our Sinatra. So smooth and yet, he was all our own as he and the P-Furs (as we called them because it was before spell check and we really didn't want to look stupid and misspell Psychedelic now did we?) were sophisticated and yet not at all content or safe. If my youth was a movie John Hughes and Louis Malle would co-direct and there would be a Psychedelic Furs song on the soundtrack.  The Ghost in You would be a good choice.

I've had a couple of old Police songs make their way to my ears recently, and I was reminded again of what a great band they were. As the 80s progressed, they got to be more and more popular and then Sting went on to doing that awful song with Bryan Adams and Rod Stewart. But and still, the Police, in their day, made intelligent music that stands the test of time. Spirits in the Material World speaks to a spirituality which was way beyond my ability to comprehend when I first heard this song, but it was cool music with a good beat.

The Psychedelic Furs: Live from the House of Blues [DTS] The Psychedelic Furs were one of the many alternative semi-avant British groups who began the 1980s with a devoted cult following and ended it with a huge popular following as well as a number of hit songs (see: The Cure). Pushed over the top by the release of the John Hughes film PRETTY IN PINK, which borrowed its title from an older Furs song in the soundtrack, the band scored their biggest hit the following year with Heartbreak Beat. This performance from House of Blues was part of the Furs' reunion tour in 2001 in support of their greatest hits compilation.
