The Magnolia Roads American Roots Hoedown VII  kicks off Friday April 29 at Dee's in Madison  with a stellar line-up featuring some of our favorites. 

It runs 4pm until 1am and features 10 great acts for a $10 cover.

One year ago, a major tornado ripped through Middle Tennessee - across the state, the storms caused loss of life and property damage.  The center of my music life, East Nashville, was hit hard - The Basement East was demolished (happily they have rebuilt and are having some celebrations this week) and friends suffered property damage.  My favorite hang, The 5 Spot, was not damaged but lost power for about a week.  They reopened one night and then closed again due to the pandemic - which shut down everything.   

For a certain group of musicians and music lovers in Nashville - the bad year (plus) started with the sudden passing of David Olney in January. His public memorial service was held just days before such an event would not have been possible - the service was also just a week after the tornado. 

It is strange to think how this anniversary might be different under different circumstances. The celebration at The Beast would be more massive for one things. But for those, like me, who were not directly impacted by the tornado... I don't know... I guess it feels like the tornado and the pandemic all got lumped together into this horrible thing that shut down the things we love and kept us apart from the people we love.  

I know, too, that people are still feeling the effects of the tornado a year later - compounded by the effects of the pandemic. 

I also know - those who lived through the storm have flashbacks every time a watch or warning is issued. I send love to all affected - physically and mentally.

Next up, we have the title track from the new album by this Nashville based band with an affinity for Brit-pop and early rock and roll.  A great song. 

26. "Hero" by Chicken Rich

Next, we have the lead single from the forthcoming fourth album by this rock band from Brisbane, Australia. 

27. "Post Blue Collar Blues" by Nineteen Thirteen

Next up, we have a track from MCMXIII - the debut album by this band from Dayton, Ohio.  The band, album, and song are inspired in part by the changes of their hometown from 1913-1918. This song examines the lives of the children of the working class in that post-industrial era. 

28. "It's Not Goodbye (To Those We Left Behind" by Campfire Social

 And we close with some UK indie-pop via this collective from North Wales/Chester UK. A great track to take us into tomorrow's final recap of the week.

Moving on.  We've reached the mid-point of the week.  On Wednesday, we get wild at #E2TG - meaning we shuffle up all the songs I have collected over the years. It can be new songs and older songs, songs from albums we are now or have previously featured on E2TG, songs from my personal collection and odds and ends downloaded and saved over the years. Sometimes, songs come up and I have no idea when or how I added them.  It makes for a fun - wild mix of music - so sit back and enjoy.  (Note: a few songs were not available for the video playlist - so substitute songs by the same artists were added).

Well, I guess Americana Fest is officially and unofficially underway.  Had a blast last night, emceeing a show at Radio Cafe with the always delightful Amelia White and her Blue Souvenirs (Sergio Webb, Parker Hawkins, and Justin Amaral - plus Dave Coleman sitting in for a few songs, Mark Huff - who I think is sounding the best I have ever heard him lately. His great band including the twin guitar attack for Dave Coleman and Braden Land. I've been a fan of Dave Coleman for years. I've only recently "discovered" Braden Land - but I have been impressed.  I don't know and didn't catch the name of Huff's rhythm section, but they were great.

In addition, the show featured two U.K. up and comers. Robbie Kavanagh and Demi Marriner. who were both wonderful. They have several dates during Americana Fest, and I'm hoping to catch them again.  This show met two of my criteria for my hopes for AMA 2018 - I heard new music, and I saw some out of town friends. I am grateful beyond words for Amelia White and Mark Huff for letting me be a part of this event.

After that show, I headed to The Basement East to join the Better Together show already in progress.  This was my fourth year in a row attending this event - which somehow manages to top itself. Even though I missed several things/people I would have loved to have seen, the time I was there was worthwhile.  I got to hang with some out of town friends, meet some people - including Amilia K. Spicer whose music we have featured here. And Great Music - as usual - Chuck Mead and his Grassy Knoll Boys - stretch the definition of Americana to its breaking point - backing guests like Drivin' n Cryin' doing The Clash, Steve Poltz doing "Sympathy for the Devil", Allen Thompson doing "Get Up, Stand Up", and Mead himself doing "Peace Love & Understanding".  But the musical highlight was Aaron Lee Tasjan - looking fabulous by the way - doing a solid rendition of Helen Reddy's "I Am Woman". The crowd was initially stunned but then totally into it. 

Whiskey Wolves of the West closed the night with lots of guests and more great music.  Plus, the guy who plays Blaze Foley in the new movie did a couple of great songs backed by the one and only Charlie Sexton.

More to come.  By the way, this will likely be the last shuffle of the week, I am taking the rest of the week off for AMA, but look for some special posts. Tomorrow, I will tell you all about some of the great stuff going on this weekend - specifically we have some details about the all day party going on at Dee's Saturday - by our friends at Magnolia Road.

I am not someone who complains (publicly) (too much) when things are not going well in my life, and I am also not someone who likes to talk about it when things seem to be going well. Maybe that is because those two extremes often seem to come within minutes of each other. It's usually not very extreme - there are things that help with this - but anyway.... what was my point? Oh- this week has been interesting.  Parts have been challenging... but I have really enjoying catching up with some people I haven't had the chance to in a while, and I have enjoyed meeting new people.  And hearing some great music.  Tomorrow night is going to be one of those nights when I wish I could be in at least three places at the same time.

Oh and I go to the dentist this afternoon.  The last time I went there, I was there seven and half hours.  Hopefully, I will not be there until midnight tonight....

It is mid-week - a time when we get "wild" at E2TG and shuffle up all of the music saved to my phone. Let's do it!
