E2TG 11/6/2020 - Featured Friday Playlist - A Pleasant Surprise Mix (Stop It Remix)

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

As a person born in the South, I am encouraged by the vote (so far) in Georgia. My home state has a long way to go, but if the party leadership can step up, and if the young voters and soon-to-be voters can be engaged and energized - I see change ahead - maybe not the next election or even  the one after that, but eventually. For my progressive friends in Tennessee who are contemplating moves because of the lackluster performance in this election, I selfishly (as someone with deep roots) ask you to stick around. We need you.  In any case, I am glad to be living in a tiny blue bubble in a sea of red. To the progressives outside of this bubble - I see you and I admire your courage. Stay strong!

Cover art for Carrus & Kurtz - A Pleasant Surprise (by Adam Kurtz and Ashley Richardson)

Once again, we have reached the end of the week - and what a week? Am I right?

It was originally looking like this was going to be a light playlist, but it turns out to be 31 songs and almost 2 hours long. New and recent music from all over the world - as usual starting in my own backyard - Nashville. If you aren't already, please follow the playlist on Spotify and give it a listen. I'm sure you will find music you like by artists you may not know.

Also, keep up as we spend the next week recapping the songs that make up this playlist - beginning with the first ten songs - which you can read about below the jump.

E2TG 2/6/2020 - Greetings from Nashville - Rum and Coca Cola Mix (Hangman Remix)

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

Well, I can officially announce, that beginning February 13, I am going to have a second show on WXNA. Greetings from Nashville will air every Thursday from 6-7am.  If you can't catch it live, it will be on the WXNA Archives shortly after the show airs.

I expect the show to the a place Where Music City's Past and Present Come Together. It will be an eclectic mix of genres drawing on the wealth of great music that has come from Nashville, Tennessee.

I expect this show to be a learning opportunity for me as much as for anybody else. I hope listeners will let me know what artists I need to include.

Eventually, I hope to have some guests in to talk about Nashville's musical past and present. While I tend to be a forward-looking type of person, I think we ignore our past  at our own peril. There are people in this town who know the real history, and I believe within that history lies lessons that are gravely needed today.

The recent loss of David Olney has lighted a fire under me to hear some of the stories which reside in the minds of long-time residents of this town.

At the same time, the incredible influx of new people as brought some innovative and creative minds to our town, and these newcomers (relative and actual) are making some great music. I believe they would benefit from knowing what it was like 10, 20, 30, and even 40 years ago. Just as I believe that the "old-timers" can benefit from learning what the newcomers see in our city and what they bring to the table.

These may all seem like lofty goals for an hour long radio show that will mostly be music-based, but as I expect Greetings from Nashville to reflect my diverse tastes and interests, I think it will be help for both the listener and myself to keep in mind the method behind my madness.

Greetings From Nashville on WXNA Thursday morning at 6am (beginning February 13) 101.5FM in Nashville and wxnafm.org all around the world. Following the new show on Facebook  or Instagram

    Featured Friday Playlist
(Last day to check out this week's playlist.  The list will refresh tomorrow)

Thursday Shuffle:

A mixed bag today - with some local favorites - some E2TG faves from years past - and a classic tune from my youth.

"Morse Code" by Tape Deck Mountain (from 21st Century Loosers: The Best of 2009-2019)

"Prove My Love" by Violent Femmes (from Violent Femmes)

Thanks to Blister in the Sun this debut album the album went platinum and finally hit the Billboard charts in 1991 - 9 years after its release. But, in my hometown and the time, only a few of us knew about it and it hit me hard - putting words and music to the raging storm of emotions and chemicals going on in my adolescent brain and body.

"Something Else" by Candy Apple and The Buddies (from Leprechaun to the Right)

Candy Apple and The Buddies (aka The Buddies) were/are a group featuring members of Smoking Flowers, Justin and the Cosmics, Pale Blue Dot, Welcome to Ashley, and Black Vincent. Here they are doing the Eddie Cochran song.

"Almost Gone" by Joe Goodkin (from Paper Arrows)
"Pretty Awful" by Magnapop (from The Circle is Round)
"It's a Shame" by Bonsai Universe (from Too Many Ghosts)

Three songs from 2019 releases - all very different.

"Whiskey Lie" by Andrea Stray (from Vacancy)

A 2010 release from Nashville/Los Angeles singer-songwriter Andrea Stray.

"You Bring The Class" by The Deadline Shakes (from Zealots)

"It's So Funny" by Dylan Rodrique (from Cat's Game)

"World's Smallest Confederate Veteran" by Luke Powers (from Hwy 100)

A wonderful song from songwriter and poet Luke Powers. I had the pleasure of performing on a spoken word night with him, the late David Olney, Rod Picott, and Rebecca Weiner Tompkins.

"Honey and Sugar" by Lori Kelley (from Under Stars and Storms)

Lori Kelley is a D.C. area transplant, but she has been here several years now. We was among the first group of people I met when I kind of emerged from the shadows into the Nashville music scene. She was a big part of the wonderful Sunday night shows at Bobby's Idle Hour (Eastside Invasion). She is a wonderful songwriter, and this is her most recent release.

E2TG 2019 Recap - Part 15 - Days Inn Mix (Snowbound Remix)

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

If I was in town Saturday, I would be checking out this show.  Evan P. Donahue is a long-time Nashville musician - whose many credits include being a founding member of the legendary Diarrhea Planet. If you read E2TG regularly, you already know how I feel about Ryan Sobb and his kick ass band. I don't know Nightingail, but given that they are on this bill, I am going to assume they are awesome.  Check it out!

Well, it is the last post of our 2019 Recap.  So much great music this year.

I have been asked about the Earie Awards.  Last year, I awarded Earies to almost all the artists I featured in my recap. I came up with clever awards for each.  I decided not to do that this year for the sake of time. But, please know that all of the artists features in this 15 recap posts are winners in my eyes.

I will be out Monday and Tuesday, but I will return Wednesday with some special Earies to give out. I close out 2019 feeling fortunate for the music that I have been exposed to, the people I have met, and the experiences I have had. I look forward to 2020 despite the turbulent and quite honestly disheartening times. Music has and will always be my sanctuary and my comfort from situations outside of my control. I have big plans for E2TG in 2020 and some of those plans involve stepping out of my comfort zone.

Here is the final recap post - more great music represented here.

Trending Tuesday Morning Shuffle - The Slouch Mix (Little Rabbit Remix)

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

*Note: The video playlist at the bottom of the post attempts to closely approximate the shuffle I listened to on my way to work this morning. When a video for a song was not available, I substituted another song by the same artist. When I could not find any videos by an artist, I included a related video or did not include a video for that track. This blog may reference unreleased tracks, however, no unreleased music is ever included.

Honestly, just trying to make it through this short work week... I might make it - still up in the air...

Let's get to some fine, fine Trending Tuesday music -

ICYMI yesterday, we are in the midst of the Fall Pledge Drive for WXNA Nashville. The info you need is right on the homepage - including details of the various levels of giving and the related premiums being offered.  While at the website, you can livestream the station, check out the schedule and archives, and read more about the things that make WXNA a community resource.

After that I headed to Dee's to catch some great music from Daniel Walker, Jaime Harris, Chris Moyse, Nick Nace, and Jon Latham - a really fun night - with lots of cool people in the crowd.  I am pretty exhausted.  Just three more official nights of AMA to go, and only a day and a half of work left.

Tonight Darrin Bradbury will be playing at Mercy Lounge as part of the ANTI Records showcase.

I am back!   I had a great time at Muddy Roots.  I will have a lengthy recap/overall observation about this weird, wild, and wonderful festival that is not 10 years old!

For now, I will just leave it at - it is a great music festival, it is a wonderful social event, and it is a hell of a lot of fun.

Onward,

We are finally ready to announce our second act for Week 5 of the E2TG 8th Anniversary Residency.  It is... MICROWAVE MOUNTAIN!!!!!  You may recall that MM was set to play last year, but unfortunately had to drop out due to some scheduling conflicts.  I am so thrilled to have on-board. Week 5 with The Big Dumb and Microwave Mountain is gong to be a trip!  Don't miss it (or any of our four other weeks).

We also have had some artist shifts to the previously announced schedule - so here is the FINAL LINEUP!

Now, we need to jump back into our first shuffle in over a week! Let's go!

Trending Thursday Morning Shuffle - Colorful Recipes Mix

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

Well, I'm back after being a little under the weather yesterday.

Happy Birthday to the 2014 E2TG Artist of the Year, and the most tagged artist in E2TG history - Darrin Bradbury!

Only 7 more shuffles and 7 more days of the 2017 Earies.  After next Friday, I will be out for the rest of the year, but you can expect the Golden Earie Awards to drop during the week between Christmas and New Year's Day.

Meanwhile, we have another batch of Earie awards that are burning a hole in my pocket (small award or big pocket?).   As always, no nominees - my categories are arbitrary and sometimes silly but the awards are heartfelt.

Featured Friday Morning Shuffle- Burn it Down Mix

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

Okay - I need to get some things out:

Take care of those less fortunate, protecting and empowering the oppressed, having compassion for others, honesty and transparency from our elected representatives, and respecting our planet. These should not be controversial of divisive issues. But, it seems they are... and to be honest, I don't get it. When I read the comment sections on posts (which I really need to stop doing), I realize that I do not ever share the same realm of reality as some of the people making comments.  How do we resolve this?  Listen, in matters of public policy and politics (if you will) there is plenty of room for debate - even among people who fundamentally agree with one another.  But, facts should not be up for debate. But they are... we find ourselves in the era of alternative facts. How do we get out of this place?  Where is the common ground?

Another quick thought before I move on... can I treat everyone by the same standards. Especially our elected officials.  I guess bias is fairly natural.. but when I am reacting to something an elected official has done, I need to ask myself - how would I react if that official was from a different political party or philosophy?  Would I be just has pleased or just as outraged? If my answer is yes, then I need to work toward living up to that standard......
********************************************************************************

Last night I made it out for the early show at The 5 Spot.  The Easy Leaves (a California band with Nashville's Adam Kurtz on pedal steel) were great.  Rich Mahan and The Tripmonks were wonderful. When Allen Thompson joined them for a rare cover of the Velvet Underground classic "The Gift"... I was blown away. (I captured this on video which is on my personal Facebook page).

ICYMI:  Another song premiered this morning on E2TG.  Please check out "Isle of Hope" by Jefferson Ross from his album (out today) called Live at Hillbilly Haiku.

Tomorrow - a live Double Shot is coming up on WXNA.  Later tomorrow, I will representing WXNA at Nashville Pride Festival downtown.  Stop by the WXNA tent to hear cool tunes and meet the DJs.

Well, week one of our two week mid-year  "New Music" clearance.  The playlist down below 300 songs - but I have more to add over the weekend.  Let's see what today's shuffle has in store...

Today, I am thinking about something I wrote way back when this current administration was brand new. As time goes by, and things seemingly get worse and not better, it has come to my mind again.  The tendency to dismiss or distance once self from acquaintances or friends or even family members who support this current administration is understandable. And, I have not criticism or disagreement with anyone's decision in this regard, however, regardless of how we choose to handle individual and specific relationships, the fact is that as a nation - we must find someway to understand the thinking of those die-hard supporters. And it is a complex thing.. which I cannot even begin to address here. But, address this - we must. As important as it is to stand up for what I believe and to stand up for people who are genuinely and correctly frightened by current events - and all of that IS important. I think it is necessary to attempt to see what led some people to a different world view.

Well last night, I unveiled the featured artist for the second week of the E2TG 6th Anniversary - May Residency at The 5 Spot. It is 2015 Artist of the Year, Jon Latham who will be rocking the house with a full band set. If you haven't seen Jon and his band, get ready. It will be loud and it will be awesome!

If you are in Atlanta tonight, Nashville's own Benchmarks will be playing at Vinyl with long time E2TG favorite Killing Kuddles.

It is Tuesday, and here at E2TG that means we dig into our "New Music" playlist and find out what is "Trending"
