E2TG 8/31/2020 - Music City Monday - Kiss Somebody Mix (Nuclear War Remix)

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

Happy Monday.  I am running short on time - so no preliminaries... just on to the music!

Today we cover songs 10-14 of this week's Playlist:

10. "Angel of Montgomery" by Raveis Kole
We start this segment of music off with the Bellingham, Washington based duo of Laura Raveis and Dennis Kole with their take on the John Prine classic. This new cover retains the spirit of the original while adding some fresh musical ideas to the the song. A great way to start this week.
11. "Mercury" by Andrew Leahey & the Homestead
E2TG and East Nashville favorite Andrew Leahey and his band have been steadily releasing new music for much of 2020, and they are back with yet another fantastic song.
12. "The One You Love" by Rich Krueger
Last week, we had a new single from 2018 E2TG Artist of the Year, now he is back with his brand new album - The Troth Sessions. The Chicago physician turned award-winning folk singer has been garnering some well-deserved National attention. As I felt, when I made him Artist of the Year withing the first year I my having "discovered his music" (an award typically reserved for artists who have been on my radar for some time), Krueger is something special, and this new album just locks that concept into my mind.
13. "TOS2020 - Single Version" by ReMission International
Next up, we have a remake of The Mission's classic song - from the second regular studio album. Here the song is performed by The Mission front man Wayne Hussey along with  member of The Cure, Siouxsie & The Banshees, Slowdive, Bauhaus / Love and Rockets, The Smiths, The Twilight Sad, Depeche Mode, The Cult, The Wonder Stuff, Gary Numan, Evi Vine, Midge Ure (Ultravox), Spear of Destiny / Theatre Of Hate, Beauty In Chaos, The Soft Cavalry, All About Eve, Guns N' Roses, Nine Inch Nails and Gene Loves Jezebel. The maxi-single is being released in support of front-line workers in the fight against COVID-19.
14. "Wanderer" by Jacob Everett Wallace
We close this segment of music with a new song from this singer-songwriter originally from Texas but now based in Oregon.  Jacob Wallace is currently an internationl travelling minister who is spearheading building a house of prayer in Orgeon. This song was written around a campfire in Oregon.

Anyway, we have a good one, so let's get started!

Wow! It's December..... It's about time to dive into the 2018 Earie Awards!  Is this the third annual Earier Awards?  I think that's right - maybe fourth annual - who knows... As always, it will different than prior years and I'll be making it all up as I go along...

But first, we missed last Music City Monday - so let's do this.  As always, this shuffle comes from my epic (and ever growing) Music City Monday Spotify Playlist   - The playlist is new and classic albums and songs from artist and bands who have or have had some connection to Nashville.  As you might imagine, it is a diverse combination of all kinds of music from musical friends, musical heroes, and the like.

Music City Monday Morning Shuffle - Trying Not to Barf Mix

All of this happened a long time ago when the world was a very different place. Of course, none of us knew that at the time.

I am continuing to work on my Spotify playlists for E2TG.  So far, I have completed seven - January - July2018.  These are meant to be a cross-section of music I featured during those months - not necessarily music released in those months.   If you are interested, you can check out the playlists (links below)  and follow my personal profile to find out when new playlists are created.

E2TG January 2018
E2TG February 2018
E2TG March 2018
E2TG April 2018
E2TG May 2018
E2TG June 2018
E2TG July 2018
E2TG August 2018 (coming soon!)

Well another Americana Fest is in the books.  Once again, it was a wonderful experience (and there are so many ways to experience it). It is overwhelming, but when you accept that you can't do everything and just enjoy what you can do, it all works out.  I am still recovering and have not yet processed everything, but I can say, it was great to meet some out of town friends, see and hear some E2TG favorites - including four past E2TG Artist/Band of the Year winners: Brian Wright, Darrin Bradbury, Jon Latham, and Ladies Gun Club. I also saw some potential 2018 artist/band of the year contenders.

It's time to get into the shuffle. It's Monday, so we dig into our Music City Monday playlist to get a random shuffle of great artists who do or have called Nashville home.  Let's go!

Music City Monday Morning Shuffle - Can't Complain Mix

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

The early evening is almost as perfect as the day was. It’s a good walk to
Antonio’s. We’re walking in a loose pack. Zü is not with any one of us, but she
is not exactly avoiding us either. It’s hard to explain, but it is impossible to
misinterpret. Richard is telling me about a football game, and as usual, I’m
struggling to connect myself to the conversation. Apparently, he got into a game
on the main quad. Richard is saying something about catching a pass or
something, and I try to react with the proper amount of enthusiasm. A car is
driving slowly down the road and weaving slightly. A dog is howling on an
adjacent street, and someone somewhere is blowing their car horn. All of a
sudden, somebody grabs my arm.
“We’re here.”

I'm glad that I decided to make Monday's at E2TG Music City Monday.  It, at least, gives me one thing to look forward to about the start of another week.  Our Music City Monday Playlist on Spotify contains over 1,000 songs from Nashville and former Nashville based artists from the past and the present.  It is an eclectic mix that I think provides a good cross-section of some of the awesome music that was and is being made in Nashville - Music City USA.

Let's shuffle - shall we!?

Music City Monday Morning Shuffle - Honey Bunny Mix

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook

Well, I guess time has run out on "easing into the new year..."

I had promised some changes for 2018 here at E2TG and today, I am unveiling two of those changes.

I am not sure if this is going to be an every Monday thing or what, but I would like to introduce a new feature on E2TG.

Marie/Lepanto is a new inter-generational project that features Will Johnson (Centro-Matic) and Justin Peter Kinkel-Shuster (Water Liars). Their debut "Tenkiller" is due out on January 26. I will have some of the songs in my upcoming shuffles, but for today, I wanted to let you hear the first track released from that album. It's called "Iverness".

Will Johnson fronted Centro-Matic for two decades and is also frontman for South San Gabriel, a member of New Multitudes (Woody Guthrie lyrics set to new music, with Jay Farrar, Jim James), did a duo project with Jason Molina (Molina and Johnson), drummer and official member of Monsters of Folk (with James, Conor Oberst, and M. Ward), a duo with David Bazan as part of Overseas, and a member of the Undertow Orchestra (with Bazan, Mark Eitzel, and Vic Chestnutt). NPR has praised Centro-Matic's "superb rock records" and Johnson's "great images" and "superb songwriting." He lives in Austin, TX.

Meanwhile, Kinkel-Shuster co-founded Water Liars, about whom the NY Times said, "dark, lonely roots-minded indie rock is affecting, all the more for its sparseness." NPR called the band "a low-key triumph... prone to fits of stark gorgeousness" and Consequence of Sound said "Kinkel-Shuster's painted howl will stop you in your tracks." Julien Baker listed JPKS' 2016 album among her top ten albums of the year. Water Liars tooks its name from a Barry Hannah story and the band was on Misra Records and Big Legal Mess. The album is called 'Marie/Lepanto' after a sign on the freeway in Arkansas and was recorded at Sam Phillips Recordings Service, where Margo Price, Jason Isbell and more have taped albums. He lives in Arkansas and brings a deep south viewpoint to his work.

Nashville readers: Marie/Lepanto will be playing at  the Exit/In on February 23 with Pedro the Lion.

Another reminder: E2TG will be hosting show at  The Local (formerly known as The Country) this coming Sunday (January 14) featuring Conrad y Skordalia, Danny Henry, and Nelson Zimmerman Quinn (featuring members of Sean Quinn and the Tremblers. Music starts at 8:00pm, and it will be my birthday!

Today marks the return of "Music City Monday" to E2TG (with a bit of a twist).  Today's shuffle comes not from my phone music player, but from Spotify.  I have created an ever-evolving playlist of Nashville connected music - old and new, well-known and lesser-known, and crossing as many genre lines I can get away with.    Here is the inaugural shuffle from that playlist....

Music City Monday Morning Shuffle - Hashtag Humblebrag Mix

I really happy with the response and the outcome of the first week of our new "themed" shuffles.  I am especially pleased that each day there was a pretty wide range of musical sounds and styles represented within each theme.

So, we are back with our second Music City Monday - songs (old and new) that are somehow connected to Music City USA - aka Nashville, Tennessee.
