Featured Friday Morning Shuffle - Space Jam Mix

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

Well, we've reached the end of another week and another month of shuffles...

Temperatures have cooled off in Nashville - it actually is beginning to feel like Fall.

There is much to mourn, there is much in the world that needs to change- and which will only change if people of good conscience fight for that change.

There is also much good in the world, much beauty, and a great need to help share that good and beauty.

It's Friday, and on Friday E2TG plays songs from the "New Music" playlist which is currently just under 500 songs long - and includes songs received as recently as this week and songs added many months ago.  Perhaps I will move some of the older songs off the playlist... maybe.  Most of what I feature on E2TG will be new to someone who reads.

I am feeling more comfortable being me and doing what I do. I still have a tendency to want to please everyone, but I have learned that when I try to do that I usually end of pleasing no one - least of all myself.

That last is true on so many levels about so many different parts of my life.

Let's just shuffle- 'cause that is one thing that I do...

Topical Thursday Morning Shuffle - Hole in my Heart Mix

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

First of all, I want to thank everyone who made it out last night for the first week of our month-long residency at The 5 Spot - celebrating six years of E2TG.  Those who were there were treated to powerhouse set from Mark Robinson Band.

If you didn't make (or even if you did), we will be back every Wednesday in May with a great line-up each week.  I'll take a one day break from promoting....

So, it is Thursday, and of late, that has meant Topical Thursday.   As I mentioned, for now at least, I am shifting gears for Topical Thursday.  Since it is our anniversary month, I dug back into my archives and created a playlist of artists we have featured or at least posted about on E2TG. For clarity, there are artists/bands that either were specially featured or at least artists that I likely only got to hear because of E2TG.  The playlist - as this month begins is about 450 songs strong (I picked one some each artist/band). To be honest, some of these artists may not even remember or know that they were part of the E2TG story, but they were nonetheless.

Earie Tuesday Shuffle - The Penultimate Mix

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

Look, I'm as ready as any of you to put 2016 behind me, but I have a little unfinished business.  Besides, all of the great music put out and discovered was one of the best parts of an otherwise crappy year.  So, I have the final batch of "Earie" Awards to hand out, and then later today, I will unveil the Band/Artist of the Year Award for 2016.

First off, one outside the shuffle.

The "Rockified Country" Award goes to Saint Luke's Drifters. I first met Mitch Laney of the band at a Richie Owens show a while back.  Then, I saw his band play a show with Richie.  Their sound reminds me at times of Jason and the Scorchers or the early Georgia Satellites when Dan Baird was a part of that band. But, they have some really unique qualities. I think they do country music better and more purely than either of those bands. And, when they rock, they bring it. Their live shows always yield awesome covers to go along with their original songs - like ones on their 2016 release Trials and Tribulations.  The album was mixed by Eric Ambel (who by the way I got to briefly meet during Americana Fest this year).

Now let's do the final shuffle of 2016 for real, ya'll,,,

Featured Friday Morning Shuffle - Jump Back Down Mix

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

Well, yesterday I wrote about the finale of Mark Robinson's Showband and Rhythm Revue Residency at The 5 Spot.  Well, the show certainly lived up to my expectations (and then some!).  Master levels musicianship, world-class vocalists, and Mark Robinson - who is a consummate bandleader.  Such a fun night.

Well, this week has kind of flown by in a hurry... it is Friday and time for Featured Friday on E2TG.

Featured Friday Morning Shuffle - Let Your Freebird Fly Mix

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

Hey, it is Friday, ya'll!

Last night, I attended a house show with performances by Kent Eugene Gooslsby and Micah Schnable (Two Cow Garage).

I really love Kent Goolsby's songs and hearing him sing with his wife Anna Leigh was wonderful.

If you have seen Two Cow Garage live, you know how awesome they are, but if you have not seen Micah Schnable solo... He writes brutally honest songs about the human condition, and although he and I look very different on the outside, his writing and performing are so direct and personal, that I cannot help but "get" every word his sings.

A really fun night.

Well, we have a Featured Friday shuffle that I listened to as I slugged my way into the office for this final day of a brutal work week... Here in Nashville, we got this little hint of a tease of autumn weather, and to be honest, I fell for it - even though logic and historical evidence should have told me that it is still August... well, summer is back and with it the heat and humidity.  Sweating is inevitable.

Trending Tuesday Morning Shuffle - Crybaby Mix

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

I am back. I was a bit under the weather yesterday.  Time is short - so let's jump right into the Trending Tuesday Shuffle.  First of all disclosure:  I have been receiving so much new music lately that I decided to create a new playlist featuring a bunch of that new music.  I will be using this playlist in place of the Trending Tuesday and Featured Friday playlist for the foreseeable future.  Readers will not detect any changes - but I did want to let you know about the change...

Music City Monday Morning Shuffle - Choo Choo Mix

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

Another work week is upon us.  Monday.

A few interesting events coming up (off the top of my head):  Scott Miller (The V-Roys, etc.) will be making a rare early show appearance in Nashville Wednesday at The 5 Spot.  6:00pm.  Later that night, an all-star cast will be recreating Ryan Adams sixth studio album, Cold Roses - that show is at The Basement East.

Thursday night: Sergio Webb and Nathan Bell will be at The Family Wash at 8:30pm.

There are tons of other great things happening around Nashville every night this week and pretty much every week.  The ones I mentioned just came to my mind.

We call it Music City Monday - because we shuffle up songs from our locally oriented playlist... songs connected to Nashville, Tennessee aka Music City USA.

Here is today's shuffle:

Music City Monday Morning Shuffle - Bad Decisions Mix

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

I attended the J.R. Wyatt CD Release show last night.  J.R. sounded amazing. I have been a fan of his since I saw him perform a solo set at Logue's Black Raven (RIP).  He writes amazing songs, has a great voice, and last night he was backed by an awesome band (who all played on his new album, Staying Gold which is out now).  Expect to hear more about this album very soon....

E2TG Artist of the Year  Jon Latham went on right before J.R. playing his first full-band show one year after completing the mastering on his album Real Bad News.  He has had an incredible year. Having seen him perform many times and having been impressed many time, I feel like last night was Jon's star turn (or something like that).  Yes, his band was extraordinary - filled with great musicians and songwriters and friends (Aaron Lee Tasjan, Eli Rhodes, Sean Quinn, and Raun Shultz). and they were every bit as good as one could have expected. Still, it was Jon Latham's stage and he owned it completely.  It is truly heartening and inspirational to see the growth of his confidence and stage presence in the almost two years since I was first introduced to his music. Yeah, I'm one of those, "I knew him before..." people, and I say that with pride and joy!

Time for a Music City Monday shuffle:

Music City...um Wednesday Morning Shuffle - Sidewalk Used to End Mix

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

Tonight, some of Nashville's best will gather at The 5 Spot in benefit for Megan Palmer.  It is part of the Rod Picott Residency and the event will be live streamed on Concert Window.

Almost simultaneously, some of the best songwriters around will be playing an amazing round at The Country.  Renee Wahl, Joe Nolan, Julie Christensen, and David Olney.

Oh to have wings and a time machine... or at least a clone.

Okay... here's the deal... due to different circumstances, I have missed the last two Music City Monday posts, so I decided to call an audible and so, for the next two days, I will be spinning tunes from the Music City Monday playlist.  I tried to think of  clever name for this anomaly, but alas...

Trending Tuesday Morning Shuffle - Just Glad to Be Working Mix

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

The weather is heating up in Nashville - temperatures are predicted to be hovering near 100 this weekend. I have no point to this, I just realized I rarely give weather updates on E2TG.

It really bothers me when people say there is no good music these days, because I am struggling to keep up with all of the great music which shows up in my inbox on pretty much a daily basis. If you aren't hearing great new music, it is because you aren't trying hard enough.

Here is a sampling of some great (fairly) recent music which you should give a listen....  We call Tuesdays, Trending Tuesday because Trending starts with a 'T' and is a word that the internet seems to like...

Ug... is it Monday already?  Okay... I have to be quick as I have some errands to run.

I hope everyone had a good Easter Sunday no matter what or how you celebrate or not...

Monday, as our new custom demands, is dedicated to artists who have some connection to Nashville, TN (aka Music City USA).

Trending Tuesday Morning Shuffle - An Affliction Mix

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

Some days are like running up a down escalator that is moving faster than you could possibly ever run...  but you keep on running because... well you do... and eventually the escalator slows down or stops or maybe even starts moving up... wait, do escalators ever do that?  What as I talking about...

Eh...

Trending Tuesday Shuffle up coming....

Music City Monday Morning Shuffle - Hashtag Humblebrag Mix

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

I really happy with the response and the outcome of the first week of our new "themed" shuffles.  I am especially pleased that each day there was a pretty wide range of musical sounds and styles represented within each theme.

So, we are back with our second Music City Monday - songs (old and new) that are somehow connected to Music City USA - aka Nashville, Tennessee.

Featured Friday Morning Music Shuffle - All Over Before Mix

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

I have seen the dystopian future of Buck Owens tribute bands, and it's name is Buck N Stuff!

Okay, let me start from the beginning...  So, I ended up spending almost the same amount of time at The 5 Spot last night as I did at work yesterday.  No wonder I am tired today...

Paul Burch and the WPA Ballroom began their February residency with special guest Kevin Gordon who played lead guitar all night.  The band was hot, the songs were great, and the vibe of cool.  The only thing missed were the people.  Come on Nashville!  You got three more week of this residency.  You gotta get there!

The late show, kicked off with Darrin Bradbury  doing a pretty rare solo set and pulling out some chestnuts like "Zoey" (aka the ka-ka-cool song), "Conversation with Superman", and "Yardsale".  Jon Latham was up next accompanied by Sean Quinn.  Latham picked up on shoeless singer-songwriter mantle from Darrin Bradbury (who now wears shoes usually) and he did not hold back - making the pain of "Hand Me Down Heart" palpable. A highlight was his extended riffs on "Take It Easy" and "Boys of Summer" into his rendition of his summer anthem "Major Key".

Next up, were two singer-songwriters that I was not familiar with:  Elli Perry who is in town working on a record, delivered a loose and awesome set with Robbie Crowell of Deer Tick playing drums and producer Adam Landry on bass.  For the last song, Crowell and Landry switched instruments. That last song was a soulful, slow motion dirge that was wildly unexpected and disorientingly awesome.

Chris Watts is a Louisiana born singer-songwriter - whose back story includes being shot in the leg while serving with the National Guard at the Superdome during Hurricane Katrina. Watts played with a stand-up bass player and a drummer - injecting pep and good humor into his songs.  He has a new CD coming soon, and he will be playing a CD release show in March at The City Winery.

The night ended (well past midnight) with the aforementioned Buck N Stuff.  This power trio lead by Adam Kurtz and featuring Cameron Carrus and Lemuel Hayes play nothing but Buck Owens songs, and they play them like you have never heard Buck Owens before.  This was their second ever live show (following a $2 Tuesday gig that I missed last week), and I am so glad I did not miss this one. The styles flew wildly from Reggae to Hard Rock/Punk to Cosmic Country - lots of echo-y vocals and looped guitar parts and Adam Kurtz bouncing all over and off the stage like the madman genius he is - all the while, Carrus and Hayes held the whole glorious mess together.   Hands down among the most fun sets I have seen a while.

Tonight, I will take in some of Tim Carroll Rock and Roll Happy Hour and then head over to The Country for The Tangled Hearts and Saint Luke's Drifters.

Oh, and we still have a featured Friday shuffle to get to....

Wednesday Morning Music Shuffle - Life's Revolving Door Mix

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

Thinking today about those pivot moments in life, when trajectories get changed...

I have been reading a book called Outlaw about Waylon, Willie, and Kris that is a lot about Nashville in the 60s and early 70s... Much about the "establishment" and the creative forces that bucked the system to carve their own path - or to follow a path blazed by Johnny Cash and Bob Dylan. It has me thinking a lot about Nashville in 2016....

Tonight is promising to be another of those nights... first off, it is the final night of Jason Ringenberg's residency at The 5 Spot with tonight's guests Kristi Rose and Fats Kaplin.  After that, The Family Wash is hosting a tribute to the late great J.J. Cale that has a cast of performers that is pretty amazing.

Shuffle time....
