E2TG 8/2/2021 - Music City Monday - Meaningless Words Mix (Salt Water Remix)

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

Diving into another week...

Featured Friday Playlist recap (part 2) (songs 10-13):

10. "Choppy Waters" by Dust Monk
First up, we have the second single from this UK-based electronic music duo - whose sound on this track ventures into alternative rock territory in a cool way.
11. "Get Arrested" by Criag Walker and The Cold
We recently featured the song "Auslander" by the Irish band Power of Dreams.  That band is built around the songwriter of Craig Walker. Here Walker teams up with Canadian producer - The Cold (aka Erik Alcock) and this is their debut single.
12. "Glorious" by The Kondoors
The Kondoors return to the E2TG playlist with their summery single. The Kondoors are Gavin Condor and Jessica Greenfield (Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds).
13. "Suddenly" by Janet LaBelle
And, we close this section of music with title track from the 6th Release from NYC based singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Janet LaBelle.

E2TG 6/21/2021 - Music City Monday & More - God & The Devil Mix (Static Swell Remix)

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

We are back after a few days off - trying to get back in the swing of things...

Featured Friday Playlist recap (Part 5) (songs 18-21):

18. "FLIP" by Erin Coburn
First up, we have a recent single from this Kentucky based singer-songwriter who combines trap with 90s  flavored rock into an original sound. A great way to jump start our return from a couple of days off.
19. "Underclass Heart" by GAZ Price
Next up, we have a 27 year old singer-songwriter from the UK with his most recent single.
20. "Better Now" by Mothgal
Next up, we have a Nashville based American-Australian pop duo of Courtney Wray and Alex Tomlins. This is their first release.
21. "The New Normal" by Christina LaRocca
And, we close with a new single from L.A. based Renaissance woman Christina LaRocca with a song she started before the pandemic which took on some added meaning over the last year and a half. A great song to close out this segment of music.

E2TG 10/05/2020 - Music City Monday - Cold Mix (Blue Neon Remix)

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

Well, we are back after the weekend. Fortunately, nothing of substance has occurred in the world since we were last together....

Crazy times for sure... I am struggling to see the path forward from here - except, I do know it starts with a decisive electoral victory over evil. Today is last day to register to vote in Tennessee for November 3.  I urge everyone reading this to make sure you are registered and then make a plan as to how you are going to vote and vote safely.

Before we get to today's Music City Monday Shuffle - we need to pick back up on our recap of this week's Featured Friday Playlist.  Today - Songs 9-12!

9. "Yellow Frames" by The Jensen Sisters
To start things off we have the title track to the debut album by this young Minnesota based country duo. Kendra and Kansas Jensen are just 17 and 20 years old. They were named new artist of the year at the Midwest CMA awards, and they recently celebrated the third anniversary of their Gypsy Outlaw Radio show.
10. "Dangerously High" by The Wheel Workers
Up next, we have a track from the newest album by the long-running Texas rock band. It also happens to be their oldest album. I remastered version of their heretofore unreleased 2003 debut album.  At the time the album was made, the band was knows as The Wheel Works, and they were based in Austin.  They are now based in Houston.  I had not read the e-mail before I listened, I don't believe I would have suspected this was made seventeen years ago. Great stuff.
11. "Brain Dead" by Worthless Commodity
Music comes to be in a variety of different ways. Sometimes, professional publicists send me e-mails or even CDs, back when I went to shows are the regular, I would sometimes discover a band at $2 Tuesday or opening for a band I already knew. Sometimes musicians post about their friends.  And sometimes, my best friend and long-time musical partner in crime meets two kids at a comic convention in Fort Collins, Colorado and tells me about their band.  Anyway, that is how I first heard about Worthless Commodity - a young hardcore band from Fort Collins. This is a track from their 1/2 of a split EP. Their songs are short and profanity-laced and a lot of fun.
12. "In the City" by Leron Thomas (Feat. Iggy Pop)
A few week's back, we featured Leron Thomas' stunning single "Endicott". Now, the album, More Elevator Music is out.  This track features Thomas' previous collaborator Iggy Pop, and it is an equally stunning track. I don't unnecessarily kick myself for being late to the game on great artists, but I do feel grateful when I do finally catch up. Leron Thomas is fantastic.
Tomorrow - songs 13-16

E2TG 8/03/2020 - Music City Monday - An Elephant Mix (Good Stuff Remix)

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

Here is to everyone fighting the good fight - whether that fight is for equal justice and rights for all people or just a fight to stay afloat and alive during these challenging times.  Whether the fight is one of words and action against injustice or one of personal internal struggles in the face of unprecedented challenges.

You are not alone, and there are those of us who may not on the front-lines everyday, but please know that we have your back.

At times, I am overwhelmed by the evil and indifference, apathy, and even acceptance of evil. But, I am okay, and so I must push through those feelings - acknowledge them sure - but push through.

I don't always know exactly what to do or say in every situation and surely these are complicated times.. but standing for what is right and what is just in never complicated (unpopular and dangerous sometimes - sure - but never complicated).

Recapping this week's Featured Friday Playlist: Today, we have songs 8-12:

8.  "Don't Wanna Let You Down" by Jon Worthy
A true story of the first month of the pandemic. This new single is Worthy's first self-produced and self-mixed single. A great song.
9. "Moons of Titan" by Jon Hassell
Next up, we have the jazz pioneer - trumpet player and composer - who worked to integrate ethnic traditions with electronic music.  His new album - Seeing Through Sound - is a follow-up to his 2018 Listening to Pictures album - considered part 2 of his pentimento series.
10. "Pieces of Me" by Ben Arthur
Next up, we have the latest single from long-time E2TG favorite Ben Arthur - who kicked off our 2019 8th Anniversary Residency. He is host and creator of the Song/Writer podcast which features a prose story followed by a song written in response to the story.
11. "Lovely Melancholy" by Ten Penny Gypsy
Next, we have another track from the new album Fugitive Heart - by award-winning Arkansas country duo Ten Penny Gypsy.  This album - like their last was produced by Anthony Crawford.
12. "Hold on Hope" by Tayls
We close out this segment of music with the latest single from Nashville's Tayls - led by Taylor Cole (former front man of Chilaxy and current drummer of Creature Comfort).  The next in a series of cover singles - this is their take on the 1999 Guided by Voices song.
Tomorrow - songs 13-17...

E2TG 7/13/2020 - Music City Monday - Stomp and Holler Mix (War All the Time Remix)

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

I'm kind of short on time and probably will be this week, so I'm going to skip the preliminaries.  We have some great music to share. Songs 6-10 of this week's Featured Friday Playlist.  Also, if you follow E2TG on Instagram, I will sharing the individual tracks as presented her on my story. Look for today's songs later today.

Also, a note about the Featured Friday Playlist. The ordering of this playlist is a weird combination of planned and arbitrary.  I don't want to go into details, but suffice it so say it should not be considered a ranking in any way, and I definitely sometimes save great songs for the latter part of the playlist. Nevertheless, I have never liked the idea of songs competing against each other.  The playlist is new and recent music that I dig. Period.

Below the jump, we have this week's Music City Monday Shuffle - a random shuffle of the exhaustive (84+ hours) playlist of Nashville-centric music.

First out, we continue our review of this week's Featured Friday Playlist with songs 6-10

6. "The Hills" by Leland Sundries
We start things off with a new release from an E2TG favorite.  Leland Sundries - now based in Memphis came back with a garage rock cover of a song by The Weeknd.  A fresh take on the song.
7. "Missing the Missing" by Andrew Leahey & The Homestead
Another new single from Andrew Leahey & The Homestead. Leahey started recording the song in his hometown of Richmond, Virginia and finished in Nashville. It was inspired by the music he heard growing up.
8. "You're the Only One (Who Breaks my Heart)" by Ben Arthur
Long time, E2TG favorite Ben Arthur is back with a new single and also new episodes of his Song/Writer Podcast. I really love this song.
9. "Good Life" by Hurricane Ruth
Up next, we have the title track from the brand new album by blues vocal powerhouse Hurricane Ruth.  The song co-written by Hurricane Ruth stems from a conversation she had with her mother about a year before the elder woman passed away. It is an emotionally gripping song of perseverance, hard work, pain, and strength.
10. "Hey Child" by Margo Price
From the words of mother at the end of her life, to the words of a mother to a child near the beginning of their life. This is a track from That's How Rumors Get Started - the highly anticipated new album from Nashville's own Margo Price. Although Price, at this point, doesn't really need me to help spread the word, I included her because of her long and continued role in the Nashville music community I love. From Buffalo Clover to her band The Price Tags, Margo Price, in her success, has continued to champion the music of this community. I have fond memories of her playing drums for Darrin Bradbury during a show (or two) at The Basement East.

Tomorrow songs 11-15 (or so)

E2TG 2/10/2020 - Music City Monday - Pray for Rain Mix (Double Trouble Remix)

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

Some random notes for a rainy Monday:

Great to catch Darrin Bradbury last night at 3rd and Lindsley.  Molly Martin opened, and she was fantastic.

Darrin played some new songs - which I dug plus some newer and older favorite.  He played an unplugged set (with a microphone stand he created with the help of Brian Milligram. No wires to the guitars ("because it is bad for the environment" so he said). It was a top-notch Darrin Bradbury set - he was engaged and engaging and as he often does - he had the audience's attention throughout.

I also got to hear some rough mixes of the next album. I can't tell you much, but... oh my, it is gonna be good.

I am preparing for Thursday's debut of Greeting from Nashville. I have the playlist nailed down and ready to go. I am excited because I have managed to have every band that played the first ever Nashville rock show that I attended (nearly 35 years ago) represented in some way on the show. Plus some newer favorites.  If you are up bright and early Thursday (at 6AM Central) you can catch me live on WXNA 101.5FM or wxnafm.org.  If you aren't awake at that time, you can catch it on the archive (also at wxnafm.org).

Wild Wednesday Morning Shuffle - Mean All the World Mix

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

All of this happened a long time ago when the world was a very different place. Of course, none of us knew that at the time.
(From The Drift - A Novel by Joe Wolfe-Mazeres) Available at Amazon.com (Kindle edition also available)

I wanted to bring to your attention an upcoming show that might otherwise slip under your radar.  If you are in Nashville and free this coming Sunday (July 22), I recommend you head to Dee's Country Cocktail Lounge in Madison around 7pm.  Joe Goodkin (a Chicago songwriter who we have featured on E2TG) will be making a rare Nashville appearance, and some of my favorite Nashville songwriters are joining him (Joe Nolan, Tom Schreck, and Connor Rand).  I want to make sure I take maximum credit for my small role (with minimal effort) in getting these folks together for this show.  I think it will be a good one.

On to our "Wild Wednesday" shuffle:

The music in my phone's memory is a hodge podge of all sorts of things:  current and past E2TG featured artists/bands, older (and more recent) albums from my personal collection, music I have downloaded for various sources - just for fun, music given to me by various people that was not specifically intended to be featured on E2TG, and maybe some other things.   On Wednesdays, I hit shuffle on all those songs and see what comes up.  It's really interesting (to me at least) in that each shuffle has it's own "personality" or flavor. And, I never know what is going to come up.  I call Wednesday's "Wild" not because the list of songs is necessarily wildly eclectic (just sometimes) but because each shuffle is like a wildcard - you never know what it will be.

Let's go!

Week 3 of the E2TG 7th Anniversary Residency is this coming Thursday. Admission is just $5.00, Must be 21+ (with valid ID) to get into The 5 Spot. I hope you will join us.

I will be reading another short section of The Drift, and I will have a (very) few copies of my novel for sale. (I had a great sales day last Thursday, and my next order likely will not be here by this Thursday,  I hope to have them in time for the residency finale on June 28.

THE DRIFT is still for sale at Amazon.com.

Well, it is Monday, and time for another edition of Music City Monday - where we shuffle up a ginormous playlist of locally sourced music from past and present. Let's jump right into the shuffle:

Music City Monday Morning Shuffle - Have a Nice Flight Mix

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

Much on my mind, as we muddle through this post-fact, post-truth, post-decorum, post-civility, post-shared humanity, post-(you-name-it) world. Look, corrupt politicians are  nothing new. But, it does seem like in the past, there was at least some effort to conceal that corruption and often when it was exposed, it had real consequences. Nowadays, it seems like corruption is worn like a badge of honor, and it is at best denied or at worst accepted.

Also thinking about social media and Facebook in particular.  People tend to use this platform in many different ways. I still contend that all technology is neutral, that is only through man's use of the technology that it becomes good or evil. That being said, I have friends who use Facebook solely to share political posts, those who use it (almost) exclusively to promote their music, those who post humorous posts, those who post pictures of children, grandchildren, or pets, etc.  I think all of those are fine. There is, though, one phenomenon that I just don't get....   There are some people who feel th need to chime in and comment on things that really don't have any thing to do with them. I'll give a hypothetical example:  A friend posts something on my wall that is basically on inside joke or a reference that makes sense to only a small group of people.  Some people will jump in and make irrelevant comments. Another example, a celebrity passes away, and people are posting remembrances of that person and what they and/or their work meant to them. There is always that person who feels the need to add either by comment or post, "Eh, I never was a fan" or "I don't know who that is but...."  I guess it's a pet peeve of mine, but if a post doesn't directly address you or you have nothing meaningful to add, then just let it go.

To be honest, the only time I have "un-friended" AND blocked someone was for this very thing.  They were a friend who I had not really interacted with at all for several years. Someone important to me made a heartfelt post about something and this person (who did not know the original poster at all) jumped in and made a totally insensitive comment basically discounting the original poster's experience. Since I was the only link between the original poster and the person making the comment, I felt responsible for their behavior and so I deleted them as a friend and blocked them.

There is something maybe important in all my ranting, but I'm not sure what it is... something about how divided we are as a nation and the amount of incivility that exists in that divide....

Well, it's Monday when we jump in with our Music City Monday shuffle - songs with some connection to Nashville, Tennessee....

Music City Monday Morning Shuffle - Not Afraid Anymore Mix

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

It is so easy to become overcome with cynicism. Truth be told, it's never been that hard for me, but nowadays, it is a real struggle. The problem with cynicism is that while it may "feel" good, it actually does not accomplish anything. I used to think that cynicism and idealism were opposites. Like you start off idealistic and over time become cynical or something like that, but I don't think that is the case at all.  I still consider myself an idealist, though, I can certainly be cynical at times.  I also do not think idealism and naiveté are the same thing at all.  I call myself an idealist, because I can envision the world/ a world when things work as I think they should. If I an naive, then I imagine that my vision of a "perfect" world is the only true vision and/or I expect that the world will work the way I think it should.  I know perfectly well that both of those are not true.  My vision (even if possible) would mostly like not work the way I think it would or would at least fall short of perfection.  And, I am fully aware that the world will never completely fall in line with my vision.

Cynicism is coming to this realization and giving up.  Hope or faith if you will, is to continue to fight for the ideal even while knowing that ultimately you are going to fall short.

Music City Monday Morning Shuffle - A Whisper in the Dark Mix

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

Jumping back into the daily grind after an enjoyable weekend with my daughter and another fun recording for a future Double Shot show...

A quick reality check: Right now in America (2017), Customs agents are stopping domestic travelers and demanding papers.  Among the high profile people detained under the guidance from the Republican administration:  a noted children's author, an American Olympic medalist, the son of Muhammad Ali, and (chillingly) a note historian who specializes in studies of the Holocaust.  This is not the America I have known my whole life.

The Republican administration (which has placed white nationalists in positions of power) has made up three different "terrorist" attacks to justify a travel ban.  And, they have remained silent to real terror attacks by white nationalists on people of color across the country.

Resist! Persist!
*****************************************************************************

Okay - to music...  First of all, because I don't get to say this every day - check out The Voice on NBC tonight to see and hear my friend and Earie award winner Taylor Alexander!

Reminder!  Details coming very soon, but #E2TG will be taking over The 5 Spot every single Wednesday in May (there are 5 of them). It's all to celebrate the 6th Anniversary of this blog.  I cannot wait to tell you who you will be seeing and hearing, but it's going to be great!

On Monday, we shuffle up songs from our Music City playlist - featuring songs with Nashville connections....

Music City Monday Morning Shuffle - The Trip Mix

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

So, Super Bowl ads portraying the current and past struggles and accomplishments of immigrants are "anti-Trump"... hmm... meanwhile, it is becoming increasingly clear that, not only is a white supremacist in the White House, but he is actually the one calling the shots.

Moving on - for now - took in some excellent music over the weekend.  Friday night - enjoyed another outstanding Tim Carroll Rock n Roll Happy Hour with Reeves Gabrels -  who currently plays guitar with The Cure and who played for many years alongside David Bowie - added his unique and distinct musical voice to the show.   After that, I headed to the Basement for a pretty darn stacked lineup that included Reuben Bidez, Tim Easton, Don Gallardo, and a full-band set from Rayvon Pettis.

Saturday - faced with a myriad of choices, I trekked to Brentwood for Joanna Barbera's CD Release show with Megan Palmer opening.   Then, I made my way to The Basement East in time to catch a rousing set by Chuck Mead and the Grassy Knoll Boys - part of Honky Tonk Saturday.

Sunday was spent working and resting and working and watching some game...

Time for Music City Monday - music from or connected to Nashville..

Feature Friday Morning Shuffle - Crumbs Mix

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

First all thanks for the support and kind words following my "rant" yesterday.  I am going to keep my off-topic portion of the blog post short and sweet.

There is a white supremacist in the White House who has been given unprecedented power over domestic and international affairs. - Yes I have posted this before, but I will continue to say it until it is not the case.

Today is Friday and we shuffle up some tunes from the "New Music" playlist which includes mostly music sent to or given to me by artists, publicists etc. These are all somewhat "new" releases, but I don't really have a set time period to when I take albums/songs off this playlist.  Anyway, it is a good one, so let's jump in.

Trending Tuesday Morning Shuffle - The Whole Picture Stank Mix

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

Running a little behind today.

How about some outside the shuffle "Earie" Awards

1.  The "Strong Spine"Award goes to Zachariah Red who released his album Backbone back at the beginning of the year.  He won a preemptive "Earie" in 2015 on the basis of "40 Miles" the first single. The album was most excellent and deserving of an "Earie" all it's own.

2. Backbone was mastered by Timothy Ryssemus who released his own album under the Ricca Vita name. Ricca Vita - the album - was one of the freshest and most unique-sounding records of 2016. It is electronic music - but what struck me about it (and I think maybe Ryssemus benefited from working with singer-songwriters like Zach Red in this regard) was the focus. Electronic music can tend to lose me sometimes, but that was not the case with this record.  So, I will give Ricca Vita the "Breath of Fresh Electronic Air" Award.

3.  The "These Days" Award for 2016 goes to Charlie Hager. Yeah, it is the title of one of his songs (of which we premiered the video), but these days, America needs a voice like Charlie Hager.  Plain spoken, honest, songwriting of the highest caliber. If you are looking for bells and whistles - go elsewhere. But, before you go, take a good honest listen to Charlie Hager's songs. His album American Saga is one you may not have heard, but it is one you really need to hear.

4. Our final "Earie" of the day is the "Happenstance Award" (you do know I just make these award names up off the top of my head don't you?). The award goes to Dingzui - a Nashville band who released Analogue in 2016. If not for a chance encounter at a David Olney show at Bobby's Idle Hour, there is a chance, I might would have missed out on hearing this album, and that would have been a shame. You have to hand it any band who titles songs "Graceland" and "The Tennessee Waltz" (neither of these are cover songs) and manages to pull it off which a couple of really excellent songs. The album is great, and since you may not have been at that David Olney show, I'm giving you a chance to not miss out.

Featured Friday Morning Shuffle - Blue Valley Mix

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

Weird weather coming this weekend - warm, storms, cold, ice... and that is just Saturday...

Just a note about the Earies and the coveted Artist of the Year award.  Last year, I held off awarding an Earie to the ultimate winner, Jon Latham until the Golden Earie (Artist of the Year).  I thought about doing that again, but since I have not decided on an Artist of the Year yet and with several in contention, I have decided to forgo that.  So - what that mean is that just because someone wins an "Earie" does not mean they are out of contention for the Artist of the Year award.  Thanks for playing and stay tuned.  All will be made clear as mud.

By the way, the preceding announcement may or may not have anything today with today's post.

It is Friday.  Shuffling from our "New Music" playlist.

Featured Friday Morning Shuffle - No Bees in the Breeze Mix

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

This has been a pretty rough week, to be honest... I haven't been feeling particularly wonderful, but it is Friday, and for right now, I am feeling pretty okay.

Last night was one of those nights that really make me glad to live in Nashville. Zach Schmidt, who is one of the best people I know and a great songwriter/artist, too, held his CD Release party at imogene + willie over in 12th South. It was a wonderful, candlelit backyard party. A great atmosphere and an amazing line-up of performers including: Hugh Masterson, Becca Mancari, Jon Latham, Charlie Whitten, Joshua Black Wilkins, Brian Wright, Aaron Lee Tasjan, and more. Schmidt closed the evening with a full-band set. His album, The Day We Lost the War is out, and worthy of attention.

Another album that is out (as of today) is Aaron Lee Tasjan's Silver Tears.  Tasjan who has been on an unstoppable upward trajectory since I became aware of his music may have just hit the hyper-drive. To celebrate the new album, he is, as I write this, conducting bus tour #12barblues and making stops (and performances) at 12 venues in and around Nashville.  It all culminates tonight at 3rd and Lindsley.  Brian Wright opens tonight's show and joins Tasjan on stage.

If all goes as planned, there will likely be no shuffles next week, but look for some posts from the highways...

By the way, not that I pay attention to things like this, but... as I am writing this, E2TG is 17 page views away from October 2016 being the highest page view month ever. Thanks for everyone who is reading.

On to the music shuffle....

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

Blargh... nothing like a nasty stomach bug to put the kibosh in plans... I'm feeling better... just a little queasy sometimes.. but I will push on and no details will be offered.

Jumping into the new week just some random tidbits... I am going to be getting a new phone soon and will eventually be moving all the songs to it and recreating playlists. Fortunately, the old phone is still functional, so I can continue to use it during the transition. Also, I am plotting a vacation, and I am hoping to post some missives from the road. More to come...

It is Monday in Music City (and other places)... here are some tunes with a Nashville connection...

Here we go... it's Tuesday... I'm a little short on time so... let us jump right into the shuffle... from the "New Music" playlist...
