E2TG 6/4/2021 - Featured Friday - Battleship Chains Mix (Paper Piano Remix)

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

We've reached the end of another week and that means that it is time for another Featured Friday Playlist.

Thanks to everyone who has followed the Playlist on Spotify - it means a lot.  This week's list is about the same length as last week - I think I have hit upon a good size for the list. Hopefully, the bands and artists will cooperate with their release schedules. (Just kidding).

Let's go!

E2TG 11/16/2020 - Music City Monday and More - Homecoming Show Mix (Omg...lol Remix)

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

It feels silly to say it... not because it isn't true, but because it is so obvious... we are still in a pandemic. Here in Nashville and elsewhere cases are on the rise, but from the government down to many citizens there seems to be a nonchalance about it all, and an unwillingness to make any modifications. As we head into winter and the holidays, it looks like dark days ahead. With so many, ignoring the guidance from health officials and determined to act as if the pandemic is either over or not real, it makes it more difficult to do the right thing.

The progress on the vaccine front is encouraging, but for now, we have to deal with where we are.

And, we have an administration more interested in fighting the results of a fair and valid election than fighting COVID.

We pick back up with our recap of this week's Featured Friday Playlist with songs 10-15:

10. "Without Us" by Black Paisley
Up first today, we have a track from the forthcoming album Rambler by the Swedish band that we featured before. This one is a catchy rocker that caught me a little of guard in a good way.
11. "Some Lucky Stardust" by Brent Moyer
12. "If We're Gonna Kill Each Other" by Dallas Moore, Billy Don Burns
In what is, I believe, a first for our Playlist, we have two tracks from the same album.  The album is A Tribute to Joe Sun.  First up, we have Nashville songwriter and musician Brent Moyer covering a Joe Sun song originally on Sun's 1998 album Heartbreak Saloon.   The second is by outlaw country notables Dallas Moore and Billy Don Burns and it is one of the last songs written by Sun and released here for the first time.  Joe Sun passed away last October.
13. "Look at the Birdy" by The Flat Five
Next up, we have a track from the newly released 2nd album by Chicago area supergroup The Flat Five. So good!
14. "Second Fiddle to a Steel Guitar" by The Sensational Country Blues Wonders!
Next up, we have a track from Jersey City native Gary Van Miert with his first album of original material. Recorded remotely with some Nashville musicians.  This is fantastic stuff.
15. "Immoral Guidance" by Danny Black; Keith Goodwin
We close out this segment of music with a Good Ole War reunion of sorts from Philadelphia based Danny Black's third album Black Ryno.  A great way to close out this segment of music.
Tomorrow - the recap continues with songs 16-20 or so

E2TG 10/05/2020 - Music City Monday - Cold Mix (Blue Neon Remix)

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

Well, we are back after the weekend. Fortunately, nothing of substance has occurred in the world since we were last together....

Crazy times for sure... I am struggling to see the path forward from here - except, I do know it starts with a decisive electoral victory over evil. Today is last day to register to vote in Tennessee for November 3.  I urge everyone reading this to make sure you are registered and then make a plan as to how you are going to vote and vote safely.

Before we get to today's Music City Monday Shuffle - we need to pick back up on our recap of this week's Featured Friday Playlist.  Today - Songs 9-12!

9. "Yellow Frames" by The Jensen Sisters
To start things off we have the title track to the debut album by this young Minnesota based country duo. Kendra and Kansas Jensen are just 17 and 20 years old. They were named new artist of the year at the Midwest CMA awards, and they recently celebrated the third anniversary of their Gypsy Outlaw Radio show.
10. "Dangerously High" by The Wheel Workers
Up next, we have a track from the newest album by the long-running Texas rock band. It also happens to be their oldest album. I remastered version of their heretofore unreleased 2003 debut album.  At the time the album was made, the band was knows as The Wheel Works, and they were based in Austin.  They are now based in Houston.  I had not read the e-mail before I listened, I don't believe I would have suspected this was made seventeen years ago. Great stuff.
11. "Brain Dead" by Worthless Commodity
Music comes to be in a variety of different ways. Sometimes, professional publicists send me e-mails or even CDs, back when I went to shows are the regular, I would sometimes discover a band at $2 Tuesday or opening for a band I already knew. Sometimes musicians post about their friends.  And sometimes, my best friend and long-time musical partner in crime meets two kids at a comic convention in Fort Collins, Colorado and tells me about their band.  Anyway, that is how I first heard about Worthless Commodity - a young hardcore band from Fort Collins. This is a track from their 1/2 of a split EP. Their songs are short and profanity-laced and a lot of fun.
12. "In the City" by Leron Thomas (Feat. Iggy Pop)
A few week's back, we featured Leron Thomas' stunning single "Endicott". Now, the album, More Elevator Music is out.  This track features Thomas' previous collaborator Iggy Pop, and it is an equally stunning track. I don't unnecessarily kick myself for being late to the game on great artists, but I do feel grateful when I do finally catch up. Leron Thomas is fantastic.
Tomorrow - songs 13-16

E2TG 7/27/2020 - Music City Monday - One Tough Town Mix (Pants Remix)

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

Before we get to the Music City Monday shuffle, we need to let you know about songs 9-15 from this week's Featured Friday Playlist:

9. "Preseb o ias" by Breichiau Hir
Starting this segment of our playlist is a new single from the post-hardcore/punk band from Cardiff, Wales.  They had been working on a new album since late 2019 and they wrapped up work in March - just before the lockdown.  They didn't want to release that music until they could tour to support it, so they dug up an old song - recorded in 2018. The title translates to "Crib of Shivers".  It is about squeezing everything out of love and life with so force that it destroys it and leaves you with a hollow shell. They call it their most uplifting song.  I think I dig this band.
10. "Long Live Life!" by rOZZ
Next up, we have our first listen to the new album by the singer-songwriter, philosopher and would be astronomer from Belgium.  We featured her music a couple of years ago, and it is great to catch up with her again.  rOZZ (aka Julie) is the forum moderator at SETI@Home (SETI being Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence).  A great song. This is from her new release Yess Sire!
11. "Drunk and Alone at Disney" by Dumpster
Dumpster is a three-piece Queer hard rock band based out of SUNY Purchase.  We were turned on to them by some friends at SUNY.  This is a great track from their new EP Fiasco.
12. "Rolling Out of Bed" by The Dream Tapes
I am just going to be perfectly honest and say I don't know how I was turned on to The Dream Tapes - an indie band from Ogden, Utah.  I think maybe they followed me on Instagram.  For some reason, I was thinking someone I know posted about them, but I can't find proof of that.  Anyway, I am digging this music from their self-titled new album.
13. "Beat of a Bad Habit" by The Jensen Sisters
I do know how I found out about The Jensen Sisters - thanks to Sweetheart PR. The Jensen Sisters are a duo from Minnesota.  This is our first taste of their forthcoming album Yellow Frames - due out in October. It is not the last we will hear from them.  Great stuff.
14. "Swiss Mountain Myth" by The Asteroid No.4
Next up, we have the latest single from psyche rock legends - The Asteroid No.4. They are now based in San Francisco, but they formed in Philadelphia in the late 1990s.  A great addition to the shuffle!
15. "Love Life" by Tawny Ellis
And, we close with the title track from the brand new album by L.A. singer-songwriter Tawny Ellis.  Ted Russell Kamp (who can be heard earlier in this playlist) plays on this album - the two met at an Americana Fest in Nashville. A great way to close out this segment of the playlist.

More tomorrow!  Check down below for the Music City Monday Shuffle!

E2TG 6/26/2020 - Featured Friday - Lockdown Mix (Profits Speak Remix)

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

Your daily reminder:  The pandemic is not over, wear a damn mask, Black Lives Still Matter, White Privilege is real, police should not be the first responder to every situation that arises. The next time you see a person of color acting "suspicious" ask yourself several questions before you call the police: would their actions be "suspicious" if they were white? do they deserve to die for whatever it is they are doing that you see as "suspicious"? Is there some other action you can take rather than calling the cops? Like ignoring them? Walking away? Talking to them? Anything?

I was thinking about the saying, "ignorance is bliss". These days there is a lot to unpack in that saying, but I would add at least one codicil: "willful ignorance is evil".

Well, it is time for a new Featured Friday Playlist!  We have another good one this week.  About six fewer songs than last week.  A fair number of E2TG favorites, local favorites, and a health dose of newcomers to E2TG.

Dig in and please Follow the Playlist.  We will begin our recap with the first 5 songs on the Playlist below the jump.  Next week, we will recap five songs a day in this space through Thursday - after which we will start it all over again.  By the way, the only reason I don't do a video playlist on Featured Friday is because I started the video playlist as a way to hear the songs being featured in an easy way.  With Featured Friday - the songs can be streamed and heard on Spotify.

E2TG 6/5/2020 - Featured Friday - Same Boat Mix (Therapy Remix)

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

I have been thinking about perspective a lot lately.  In the context that we don't all see things the same way. Now, don't get me wrong, there are universal truths that do not require agreement or disagreement. Racism and Fascism are evil and we must all work to stop them when they pop up and to dismantle the institutions where they have been allowed to thrive for generations.

No what I am thinking about is how an image or a video can elicit a strong and visceral response in one group of people, and yet, be met with apathy or dismissal by another group.  It is easy to come to the conclusion that those in the latter group have no empathy and that they lack the human qualities of compassion and decency.  And, while I don't outright deny that such people exist, I do call into the question that it is as widespread as the divisions in this country would indicate.

So, how else to explain it?  Maybe it is perspective. (I am not even sure if that this correct word so let me explain).

My best friend growing up used to pose philosophical questions whenever I would spend the night. One such question was, "How do we know that we all see the color green the same? In other words, how to we learn colors - someone points to a color and says, "Green"and I eventually learn that that color is green. But, for all I know the person who taught me "green" may perceive that color as I perceive the color that I learned was "Red".  And, I would have no way of knowing.

Now, before you come at me medical or scientific examinations of optical receptors or whatever, my larger point is that when an image comes on my phone or computer screen - my eyes take it in and my mind perceives what it is I am seeing, and if what I perceive is disturbing I react.

So, I look at pictures of the President. and  I see the bad bronzing job, the sick expression, the dead eyes, etc.  A Trump supporter sees the same picture and sees something else. My thoughts here are totally outside of disagreements about policies or even specific actions. To me, it is somewhat easy to understand disagreements over policies or opposition or support for certain actions.

But, why do I see a video tape of police violence and get angry, while someone else sees that same video and is unmoved. Could it be that they are seeing something different from what I am seeing?  That it is filtered by their experiences and biases.  And if that is true, do I need to be mindful of times when my experiences and biases are affecting my perception.

I don't know what this all means. I just feel like at some point, we have to find a way for most Americans to come together at least minimally. There will always be disagreements (even intense ones), but the level of division we have doesn't seem like it can be tenable long-term.

It is Friday and time for another Featured Friday Playlist.  I hope you enjoy, and please follow the Playlist on Spotify! As our habit, we will review the first part of the list below, and the rest over the next week.
