Heading into another week.  By the way, the 10th Anniversary of this blog is fast approaching - in May.  I also realized the 10th episode of the Ear to the Ground radio show will happened that same month - so I am planning something special to mark that convergence of events. It is not looking like it may take two weeks.  More to come.

First up, we are a track from a new EP/single from this Toronto based singers-songwriter who makes music with a wonderful combination of pop, southern soul and more.

Next up, we have our second single to feature from Dead Can Dance's Lisa Gerrard and Jules Maxwell.  Great stuff. 

19. "The Way Down" by Van Plating

Next up, we have the new single from Florida based  singer/songwriting and musician Van Plating.  It is the follow-up to the her 2019 album which marked her return to music after a decade off. A strong song, and I look forward to hearing more. 

20. "Balearic" by Are We Static

Next, UK indie band Are We Static with a fantastic new song. 

21. "Palms Casino" by Sam Valdez

Next up, a immense sounding new single from L.A. based Sam Valdez - her full length album Take Care is due out May 7.

22. "Where is the Time?" by My Name is Ian (feat. HMS Morris)

Next up, a new single from Welsh band My Name is Ian - ahead of their new album due in June called Fantastic Company.  Here they team up with an other Welsh band we have featured before- HMS Morris. 

23. "Bridges" by Jason Pilling

We have a wonderful new single from UK singer-songwriter Jason Pilling who is originally from Saskatchewan.

24. "Scallywag" by The Lancasters

Next up, a tasty bit of rock 'n' roll which builds upon the classic traditions - especially on some of the great British bands of past decades. The Lancasters are from Italy, and this  great new single is pretty darn cool.  

25. "Upstate" by Shay Martin Lovette

Some lovely and mysterious country folk from this North Carolina artist who worked with members of MIPSO, Mandolin Orange, and Mount Moriah on his forthcoming Scatter & Gather due out May 14.

26. "Fly Wizard Fly" by Mashup & Cozy Condition

And we close this segment of music with some experimental funk from Richmond, Virginia. A great tune to wind up this segment of our playlist.

It feels silly to say it... not because it isn't true, but because it is so obvious... we are still in a pandemic. Here in Nashville and elsewhere cases are on the rise, but from the government down to many citizens there seems to be a nonchalance about it all, and an unwillingness to make any modifications. As we head into winter and the holidays, it looks like dark days ahead. With so many, ignoring the guidance from health officials and determined to act as if the pandemic is either over or not real, it makes it more difficult to do the right thing. 

The progress on the vaccine front is encouraging, but for now, we have to deal with where we are. 

And, we have an administration more interested in fighting the results of a fair and valid election than fighting COVID. 

We pick back up with our recap of this week's Featured Friday Playlist with songs 10-15:

10. "Without Us" by Black Paisley

Up first today, we have a track from the forthcoming album Rambler by the Swedish band that we featured before. This one is a catchy rocker that caught me a little of guard in a good way. 

11. "Some Lucky Stardust" by Brent Moyer

12. "If We're Gonna Kill Each Other" by Dallas Moore, Billy Don Burns

In what is, I believe, a first for our Playlist, we have two tracks from the same album.  The album is A Tribute to Joe Sun.  First up, we have Nashville songwriter and musician Brent Moyer covering a Joe Sun song originally on Sun's 1998 album Heartbreak Saloon.   The second is by outlaw country notables Dallas Moore and Billy Don Burns and it is one of the last songs written by Sun and released here for the first time.  Joe Sun passed away last October.

13. "Look at the Birdy" by The Flat Five

Next up, we have a track from the newly released 2nd album by Chicago area supergroup The Flat Five. So good!

14. "Second Fiddle to a Steel Guitar" by The Sensational Country Blues Wonders!

Next up, we have a track from Jersey City native Gary Van Miert with his first album of original material. Recorded remotely with some Nashville musicians.  This is fantastic stuff. 

15. "Immoral Guidance" by Danny Black; Keith Goodwin

We close out this segment of music with a Good Ole War reunion of sorts from Philadelphia based Danny Black's third album Black Ryno.  A great way to close out this segment of music.

The weight of everything has hit me pretty hard this weekend, but I (safely) visited with a friend on Saturday and am planning another safe visit this evening.  I feel so much uncertainty and anxiety lately, and at the same time, I feel like my personal situation is much more stable than some, and so I feel guilty for feeling anxious - which doesn't help anybody. 

I am trying to lean into kindness and love whenever I can. I am trying for find the balance between staying informed and getting drowned in the negativity which is so prevalent. I still believe that we - meaning human beings, Americans, and whatever smaller groups are relevant - need to figure out a way to disagree but seek common ground... but lately it seems as if  "us" and "them" are living in two different realities - where we can't even agree upon the problems let alone begin to address the solutions. My solution is to keep drilling down to the microcosm. Even if that means seeking to find common ground within my own heart and mind.  

We head into another week, and the final days of September.  Today, we recap songs 7-10 of this week's Playlist:

7. "Change" by Tomas Doncker and Amp Fiddler

E2TG favorite Tomas Doncker is back with a fantastic new single, and he is joined by the legendary Detroit musician Amp Fiddler (George Clinton's Parliment and Funkedelic). This is a powerful song from two music industry veteran's. For new readers, Doncker is the founder and CEO of True Groove Records credited with created the global soul genre. He was part of the NYC no wave movements - playing with James Chance and the Contortions. 

8. "FM.a.m." by Buildings and Food

Toronto's Building and Food are back in the shuffle. Their album Up Down Strange Charm was released Friday, and this is the lead track - an instrumental. We covered the debut album Quick Beat Save a couple of years ago. Buildings and Food in Jen Wilson. 

9. "The Lake Worth Monster" by the matthew show

Next up, we have the stunning new single (the first in a series) from Texas based the matthew show. This is the long-running solo project of Matthew Broyles - a Texas native who spent some time in New York City before returning to his home state (Dallas/Fort Worth area to be precise).  I absolutely love this song. 

10. "The Last Dive" by Ethan Gold

We close this section of the Playlist with the latest single from L.A. based musician and songwriter Ethan Gold.  It is his tribute to dive bars with tips of the hat to Lou Reed, David Bowie, and Iggy Pop in New York and author Charles Bukowski in Los Angeles. It is a taste from his forthcoming Earth City album.

Well, here we go... COVID-19 cases are going up rapidly in places that opened up too soon, and yet many people are acting as if the pandemic is over. I have seen posts from people talking about quarantine and other measures in the past tense. It is rather infuriating. Believe me, I want all of this over as much as the next person.  Never mind (for a minute) live music, I have not been able to visit my mother since March. And, yet I see pictures all over social media of people socializing in large groups with no masks and no social distancing.

I blame the federal response - the President and Vice-President for making this a political issue and for not leading by example. I blame ignorance and willful ignorance and selfishness. And, I am pissed.

One only has to look at the numbers in other parts of the world to see what a colossal fuck up this has been.

Look, I always try to take a measured approach with offering my opinions on thinks. I have always believed in trying to see and understand the opposing viewpoints. But, on this issue, I am done. I have multiple friends and family who are at risk, I have friends who have lost loved ones to this disease.  So, when I see crowds of tourists on Broadway in Nashville crowding together without a single mask present, I am sorry, but my ability to be calm and measured has been worn away.

Wear a damn mask!




Friday, we unveiled a brand new Featured Friday Playlist, and we recapped the first five songs. Today, our recap continues with songs 6-10.

6. "Can't Turn Me Around" by Dedicated Men of Zion

We start things off with the title track from the debut album by the family sacred soul band from Eastern North Carolina. Recorded in Memphis by Bruce Watson of Fat Possum Records.  The band was "discovered" by the fine folks at Music Make Relief Foundation. 

7. "Arc Light City" by The Blam Blams

Next up, we have the latest single from Nashville's premier glam band, The Blam Blams.  The Blam Blams make classic sounding music with a fresh and modern twist. Also, Happy Birthday today to Rob of The Blam Blams. 

8. "In God's Country" by Tayls

Next up, we have the latest in a series of covers by the Nashville band Tayls - led by Taylor Cole.  This time out it is a 1987 single from Irish band U2 from the The Joshua Tree album.  A really cool cover of a song I am very familiar with,

9. "The Best Kiss ... I'll Never Have" by Maxximo

Next up, we have a pop single from this gay Mexican immigrant living in New York. The b-side of the is a cover of The Judds' Dream Chaser. A great addition to our final Featured Friday Playlist of Pride Month.  

10. Professor Pinkhair's Philanthropic Philanderings" by Carrus & Kurtz

Finally today, we have some more ambient pedal steel and bass music from The Genius of Carrus & Kurtz.  This is from the recently released Volume 2 which is subtitled It Is Important That Everything Is Important. Both Cameron Carrus and Adam Kurtz have released solo albums since the lockdown. This was from a productive three hour recording session in the midst of quarantine.

It is Wednesday already!  A rainy day in Nashville.  The news of the day is depressing and disheartening. It is one of those moments where I cannot believe we have gotten to the place we are. I try to be positive and hopeful, but today I am not feeling it.

I do know that music has ALWAYS been there for me, and I expect that nothing will change that.  So, let's get to what we do here!

A state of the world statement from this Chicago based industrial electronic rock band. Hard and pretty cool.

14. "Bed of Sun" by Cap'n Marble

Indie pop duo from California who met in Boston at Berklee School of Music. Breezy and catchy.

15. "Truth Be Told" by The Attic Movement

UK based alternative rock band with a beautiful song. 

16. "Conipher's Song" by Lazaris Pit

Hardcore psychedelic post punk from Raleigh, North Carolina. Digging it. 

17. "Can't See the Light" by The Wolfhounds

The Wolfhounds formed in 1984 and were included on the C86 compilation. The broke up around 1990 but reunited in 2006 to celebrate the 20th anniversary of C86. This is their latest release.

And, I am back. I am fortunate to still be working my day job, so my typical weekday daytime is pretty much the same as before - except for the fact that I am working from home now - which come to think of it is quite different than before...

My weekends are much different and to be honest, I haven't not been one of those hyper-productive people during this time. For me, often just getting through and getting by is all I can achieve.  I have been cooking more than before.

Anyway, it is Monday which is the day we dig into my massive Music City Monday playlist and see what comes up.  It is always interesting how the random shuffles I do turn out. I am not an expert on randomness or on the particular methods used by programs to simulate randomness. I do know that patterns sometimes seem to emerge from random occurrences. Random shuffle have been a big part of E2TG since before the beginning actually. Sometimes, I wish some newer song would come up or feel that a particular album or artists comes up too much or not enough, but overall, I believe in the concept of letting the random shuffle determine the playlist for the day....

Got to check out The Lilliston Effect for a bit at Dee's yesterday afternoon.  They play the Sunday brunch there on a regular basis - for great Sunday afternoon jazz  - check them out.

Last night was a stellar night of the best songwriters that East Nashville has to offer. It was the Nick Nace CD Release Show for Wrestling With the Mystery - which we are covering here.  Darrin Bradbury opened. Great to see him again. He played mostly new songs and songs from his latest album. The new songs are among the best I have heard from him.

Jon Latham was next. It has been a while since I saw Jon solo, and I was reminded of what he can do with just his voice, his guitar, and his songs.

Next, Jon joined Nick's band for a great set of songs. Nick is an incredible songwriter with an easy, charm. Megan Palmer, Erin Nelson, and Katie Blomarz rounded out the wonderful band.

Ryan Sobb and his band closed the night.  Ryan is one of the best and most unique songwriters around, and his power trio - featuring Chase Ballenger and Preston Cochran just seems to get better and better. They earned an encore last night.

I am disgusted daily by the behavior, actions, and words of the current occupant of the White House.

I am back after being sick yesterday.  I did take the down time to watch the 2016 documentary, Gimme Danger, about The Stooges (directed by one of my faves, Jim Jarmusch).  It brought me back to the feeling I had when I first encountered the music of The Stooges.  I think Fun House was the first album I heard, and it was one of those watershed musical moments for me.  It was interesting to see the kind of haphazard way the band came together and how the chemistry of all the pieces seemed to elevate the others.

It's Wednesday, and I'm just going to jump right into the "Wild Wednesday Shuffle" now...

Tuesday Morning Music Shuffle - An Unmade Bed Mix

Man, it felt awesome this morning - July 2, and there was an ever so slight chill in the air. 

Let's get right into the music...

Pre-Shuffle... I hit shuffle, and the first track up was "Lanquishing in Lower Chakras" by The Gabriel Construct from Interior City. This track begins with some minimalist piano. The track is eleven minutes long and features some spoken dialogue. It was truly a great way to start the morning.

In an odd sort of way, the second song of the mix, "Colonizer" by Canopy Climbers from Miles, fit well coming on the heels of The Gabriel Construct. I think it was the piano sound. Even though the use of the instrument could hardly be any more different, it still served as an effective bridge between the two songs.

Next up "Cup o' Tea" by Austin band, Little Radar.  Their new album is not due out until next month, but they currently have a sampler up on Noisetrade.

Lambchop is a band from Nashville. They are awesome. "Chelsea Hotel" is a classic song by Leonard Cohen.  It is awesome.  Lambchop covers "Chelsea Hotel" and faces will be melted and brains will explode.  Shari Lewis was not involved, but she did have a puppet named Lambchop.

Among the several albums we are anxiously awaiting, one that has us especially excited is the new record from Great American Novel. To help us all wait, the band recently made their last album Kissing available as a Free (Name Your Price) download via bandcamp. "I Want You" hits all the right notes.  They also have two tracks from the new album available.  Hit them up. 

Another day, another Ramones song.  This time we have "Outsider" from Subterranean Jungle.

We close the pre-shuffle with some "old school" Cee-Lo Green.  "Evening News" is on his second solo album Cee-Lo Green...Is the Soul Machine.

I had the opportunity to add tons of songs to the active playlist from whence we draw the daily mixes which we present to you, loyal reader. As always, I try to get a good healthy mix of new stuff, rare old stuff, classic old stuff and random oldish/newish stuff or whatever strikes my fancy.  This morning's Pre-Shuffle and Shuffle Shuffle strikes a not-so-delicate balance between genres and eras.  Give the people what they want... I don't know if I did that.  Give the people what I want? Probably closer to the truth (with the capriciousness of the random shuffle function).

Wednesday Morning Music Shuffle - Brand New Phone Mix

So, I got  my new phone that is even smarter than I am.... I haven't set up playlists so I shuffled all the songs on my memory card.  By the way, the picture above, was my view as I began my walk this morning.


 Started the shuffle with a song I picked out.  Sometimes, you just need some pure decadent nastiness to start your morning, and who is better to deliver a good dirty song than our old friends, The End Men with the appropriately titled A Dirty Song from their first EP Build It Up.  New music is eminent from The End Men as 2013 gets underway - so stay tuned in...

While the original line-up of Lone Justice did not make it past the first album, there second album Shelter was pretty darn good and produced one of my all-time favorite songs, the gorgeous Dixie Storms.

I'm Gonna Make You Love Me was originally on the 2000 album Smile by The Jayhawks.  It also appeared on the band's 2009 compilation Music from The North Country - The Jayhawks Anthology.

Nashville's own Lambchop released their latest album earlier this year. It's called Mr. M and we have the lovely and tragic, If Not I'll Just Die to close out this historic shuffle.

Tuesday Morning Music Shuffle - Ill Communication Mix

And we go Marching on into a new month.  I loaded my first songs of the new month last night, and thus have a brand new playlist from which to shuffle.  Shall we?

Riceboy Sleeps is the title of an album by Jonsi (Sigur Ros) and Alex Somers.  It is also the title of this soundcloud discovery dedicated to the pair.  Riceboy Sleeps, the song, is by Jonas Obermuller, a young German composer and sound designer.  You can check it out and download by using the player below:

Los Angeles is the stunning debut by punk legends - X. John Doe, Exene Cervenka, DJ Bonebrake and Billy Zoom.  Sugarlight is one of the songs on that album that paints a dark yet powerful tableau of a place and time which I never knew and never will experience, but which I can emotionally connect with via the music.

Old Devil Moon is a song from the 1947 musical Finean's Rainbow. Here it is performed by the legendary Lena Horne. The Moon is a powerful symbol and source of myth. Lunacy.

The  idea transporting Homer's Odyssey from the ancient world to the Great Depression Era Southern United States and infusing it with American Roots music seemed/seems ridiculous until you realize it is the Coen Brother involved with T-Bone Burnett in charge of the music.  O Brother, Where Art Thou?  The signature song from the film was written in the early 20th Century (if not earlier). Dan Tyminski from Alison Krauss' band Union Station handles the vocals on I am a Man of Constant Sorrow.

I Believe in You was a hit for country music singer Don Williams in 1980.  About 28 years later, Nashville based alternative rock band, Lambchop recorded a cover of the song and put it on their OH (ohio) album. Kurt Wagner plays it pretty straight on this stripped down version of the song.
