*Note: The video playlist at the bottom of the post attempts to closely approximate the shuffle I listened to on my way to work this morning. When a video for a song was not available, I substituted another song by the same artist. When I could not find any videos by an artist, I included a related video or did not include a video for that track. This blog may reference unreleased tracks, however, no unreleased music is ever included.
Got to check out The Lilliston Effect for a bit at Dee's yesterday afternoon. They play the Sunday brunch there on a regular basis - for great Sunday afternoon jazz - check them out.
Last night was a stellar night of the best songwriters that East Nashville has to offer. It was the Nick Nace CD Release Show for Wrestling With the Mystery - which we are covering here. Darrin Bradbury opened. Great to see him again. He played mostly new songs and songs from his latest album. The new songs are among the best I have heard from him.
Jon Latham was next. It has been a while since I saw Jon solo, and I was reminded of what he can do with just his voice, his guitar, and his songs.
Next, Jon joined Nick's band for a great set of songs. Nick is an incredible songwriter with an easy, charm. Megan Palmer, Erin Nelson, and Katie Blomarz rounded out the wonderful band.
Ryan Sobb and his band closed the night. Ryan is one of the best and most unique songwriters around, and his power trio - featuring Chase Ballenger and Preston Cochran just seems to get better and better. They earned an encore last night.
Let's move on to the shuffle! It is Music City Monday!
"Damaging Me" by Gina Sicilia
We start off the week with the first of two songs from Tug of War - the 2017 album by Gina Sicilia. Sicilia is an amazing vocalist and songwriter. From what I have heard, her new album is going to be very stylistically diverse. I can't wait.
"All But Forgotten" by Tim Carroll
On the heels of our first listen to the brand new Tim Carroll album, we have a deep cut from his album Look Out!
"Give It Up" by J. Marco
Next, we have J. Marco from his 2017 album Days of Surrender. A great rock songwriter and singer.
"Harbor Country" by Lambchop
Next up, we have a track from FLOTUS - the 2016 album by Lambchop - one of Nashville most unique and best bands for many years. Kurt Wagner is a genius of a songwriter, musician, arranger. He is brilliant.
"Middle School Frown" by Josh Rouse
Next, we have a track from Nashville - the 2005 album by Josh Rouse. The album was produced by Brad Jones.
"He Called Me Baby" by Gina Sicilia
Our second track from Tug of War - shows off Sicilia's skills has a song interpreter with her version of the Harlan Howard penned song - which has been recorded by numerous artists of various genres.
"Greying Out" by Clockhammer
Next up, we have the opening track from Klinefelter - the 1992 album by Alternative metal band Clockhammer. I saw Clockhammer around the time this album came out - opening for Firehose and Soul Asylum at 328 Performance Hall.
"Chase Me Out of the Dark" by Glossary
Next, a track from the 2007 album The Better Angels of Our Nature - by Glossary. The band formed in 1997 in Murfreesboro.
"I Couldn't Leave You If I Tried" by Rodney Crowell
Next we go back to 1988 from the album Diamonds and Dirt - with the first of five number one singles by Rodney Crowell. Diamons and Dirt was Crowell's most commercially successful albums.
"Hopeful While In Bed" by Raging Fire
After reuniting and releasing a compilation album in 2015 - 1980s Nashville alt rock legends returned in 2017 with These Teeth are Sharp - an album of original music.
