Today is Veteran's Day - a time to pause and remember those who served our nation in the military. 

I have the day off work. In the past, I have taken a day off from blogging when I am off work, but I am choosing today to press on. 

Our Featured Friday Playlist recap rolls on with songs 22-26:

22. "Medicine" by The Sea at Midnight

Starting things off we have LA based postpunk band The Sea at Midnight with a track from the  debut self-titled album. Really great stuff that reminds of a lot of great bands I love. 

23. "Dosed" by Arran Sym

Coincidentally, we follow up a song called "Medicine" with a song called "Dosed".  This is a track from the another debut - this time the EP 1000 Micrograms of Love via Scottish producer and artist Arran Sym.  Really digging this. 

24. "Illinois by Numbers" by Moral Mazes

Next up, we have a great new track from Moral Mazes - which features members of Jawbox, The Bomb, Airstream Futures,  and more.  This is from a recently released 7".

25. "White and Black Angels" by Monsieur Minimal

This is our third time (unless I lost count) featuring Greek artist Monsieur Minimal - we had previously featured the track Easteria - which is the title track from his new album.  

26. "The Distances" by Cosmopolis

There has definitely been a mood and feel to this segment of music, and this new single from global band Cosmopolis is a great way to close it out. The band's members are from UK, Belgium, and Australia.

Man - music sure is good for the soul.  After getting into a bit of a funk earlier in the week, I have gone out to hear live music the last two nights and I feel so much better.  Last night, I headed out to Dee's in Madison. Allen Thompson has been hosting a semi-weekly residency there for a few weeks - but this was the first time I was able to make it out, and I am glad I did.  2015 E2TG Artist of the Year, Jon Latham played solo and as he tends to do - he kind of sort of ruled hard.

Allen Thompson and his band were up next... I was reminded of how much I love hearing Allen Thompson sing - whether it is a cover or an original, I know of few singers who throw so much of themselves into a song.

The crowd was filled with lots of my favorite people from the Nashville music community and some of them joined Allen and his band - including Todd Snider, Aaron Lee Tasjan, and Rorey Carroll (and Jon Latham).

Anyway, it is Thursday and for now, we are still working our way through the "New Music" playlist.  The playlist had been down below 400 songs for a day or so, but I added some new music last night and it is up over 400 again.

So much on my mind these days... good stuff and not so good stuff and really bad stuff...

I am so happy that WXNA was voted Best Radio Station by the Readers of the Nashville Scene. Even if I did not have a show on the station, I would be a listener and a supporter. Thanks to the incredibly hard work of the Board (all former DJs at Vanderbilt's WRVU), a huge gap in the Nashville landscape was filled in June 2016.  Just yesterday, on my way home from work, I was listening to the station and it occurred to me how much I love listening to shows that play music outside of my "comfort zone" for want of a better term.  The variety of music and talk on the station is incredible.

As for the not so good stuff  and the really bad stuff... well, you can probably guess some of it. #Resist #Persist 

It is Thursday - and it is our recent tradition to do Topical shuffles on Thursday, but to try to get through the many songs in my "new music" playlist- I am devoting Thursday's to new music for the next couple of months.

A windy morning here in Nashville...  This evening,  I will be recording a Double Shot show which will air this coming Saturday - the theme: "Play a Train Song"....

After that, it is the first $2.00 Tuesday and Earie Award winners Adrian + Meredith are on the bill.  Lots of other good stuff happening.  Amelia White and Sergio Webb at The Family Wash 8:30-9:00 (which I will try to catch if I can get from Madison soon enough).

Well... it hasn't been an easy week, but it is Friday and cooler temperatures have descended upon our fair Music City.  Look for the Athens of the South Festival coming up tomorrow in East Park with great music and art and stuff.  Darrin Bradbury, Adrian + Meredith and more will be there.

A bunch of other things that I can't remember right now.  Get out and see some music, enjoy the weather, be good to each other.. I think that is enough for right now.

I've decided to tell you a bit more about Buck 'N Stuff because, well, Buck 'N Stuff.  First of all, they do not have any recorded music yet, but there is some live performance documentation in the form of videos. Including this one:



About the band:  Members: Bass: Buck 'N Stuff Bass Player - has been known to play a giant fiddle (but not with Buck 'N Stuff) and is alleged to have once overheard two junkies talking through a motel wall in New Orleans.  Drums: Buck 'N Stuff Drummer - is a strict adherent to Maritime Law and is rumored to be a Cat Lover.  Guitar/Vocals: Buck 'N Stuff Guitarist/Singer - when not playing in Buck 'N Stuff usually can be found sitting behind a twangy table (pro-tip: Do not place drinks on the Twangy Table- word has it that Twangy Table players are kind of sensitive about this). Also does instructional videos about how to properly prepare chicken wings.

Tonight - I will be at Tim Carroll Rock 'N Roll Happy Hour at the world famous The 5 Spot, and then heading to The Beast for a tribute show to both Nebraska and Nashville Skyline featuring a whole bunch of really cool people - many of whom have been played on or featured by E2TG.

Tying all of this together as only E2TG can, today is release day for "How We Lost the War" by Zach Schmidt. This is one you really need to check out.  Schmidt made his Music Roots debut on Wednesday. He is one of the folks for which the Buck 'N Stuff Guitarist/Singer sometimes plays Twangy Table.  And, he will be singing at the tribute show tonight.  See how I did that?

Well... here we are... I know there were some pre-Americana shows around town last night, but tonight things officially begin.  Unfortunately, due to circumstances yada yada, I will be severely limited in my ability to attend daytime events during the week, and as a caveat as I post recommendations, please understand, I will not necessarily be able to attend every one (although I would like to).  Today - I have two recommendations:  1.  The Green Room Music hosts an AMA Party at Fond Object beginning at 3:30 with some familiar names like Ben de la Cour, Tim Easton, Anne McCue, Amy Speace, Kevin Gordon and more.  If you can make any of that, you should!  2. The Beast hosts Better Together: Americana Fest Eastside Kickoff Party - brought to by the Guitartown and Sin City  (who put on last year's shindig that was for me one of the highlights of the whole fest). Hard to imagine, but they just may have outdone themselves this year.  Aaron Lee Tasjan and Friends (lots of familiar names are friends with ALT), Chuck Mead and Friends (Chuck Mead has some really cool friends, too), and Lee Ann Womack and her All-Star band.  They are holding back some big names, and there are tons of people in town. I really would not recommend missing this if at all possible.  8:00p.m. is the start time, but I would plan to arrive early - this one will reach capacity (I do believe).  Included with Wristband/AMA credentials.  Rumor has it that Darrin Bradbury will be spinning tunes in the Pub before the show along with Basement East booker extraordinaire Terry Rickards.

And just like that it is Friday!

Well, week 2 of Mark Robinson's Showband and Rhythm Revue Residency at The 5 Spot sure lived up to my expectations!

The core band of Robinson, Daniel Seymour, and Rich Schell were phenomenal. They powered through original and classic tunes.  I really dug guest #1, Mark Huff.  Great songs and that Beatles cover was so good!  Guest #2 was the legendary Webb Wilder.  Wilder played songs from the last couple of albums plus some really interesting and wonderful cover selections. I first saw Webb Wilder play live close to 30 years ago, and it great to see him still making great music and here backed by this incredible showband.  Robinson's run continues next Thursday with the one and only Davis Raines and the awesome singer/songwriter Tiffany Huggins Grant.

Let's recap last night in live music (or at least the part I took in):  The Mark Robinson Showband Residency got off to a stellar start.  Mark Robinson is truly one of my favorite performers to see live. He delivers every single time.  Guests Ted Drozdowski, Richie Owens, and Nick Kane were amazing, and when all four took the stage together, I thought the stage was either going to levitate or explode from all of the great guitar. I even added assistant guitar tech to my resume. Okay, all I did was hold a light for Richie Owens, but who doesn't embellish on resumes?

After the show ended, a group of us headed a few blocks over to The Basement East for the Louisiana Flood Benefit.  Lot's of awesome Louisiana music performed by an extraordinary line-up of musicians.  Kevin Griffin of Better Than Ezra was the first act I saw (I missed the first act of the night).  Better Than Ezra (the long-running New Orleans band has a foundation that does tons of amazing things in the Pelican State.  All proceeds from last night's show went to that foundation to be earmarked for flood relief.  Details about the foundation can be found here.  Chuck Mead lead an all-star band (including Fats Kaplin on accordion) including the Cajun music standards "Diggy Liggy Lo" and "Joli Blon" plus the "faux" but essential Cajun song by Hank Williams "Jambalaya". Next, the phenomenal Will Kimbrough who as then joined by Emmylou Harris!!!!!  Emmylou sounded soooo good.  Next up was Robyn Hitchcock and Emma Swift. I've been seeing Robyn around the neighborhood a bunch recently (which feels really weird to say), but this was the first time I have seen him perform in a while. Fantastic stuff!   Next up Chase McGillis with a band billed as The Mini Meters.  Doing Meters covers which had everyone moving.  Patrick Sweany was up next, and he was as incredible as always. He brought up Kevin Gordon for a couple of songs and then gave up the stage  for Gordon and his band to close out the night in fine style. The vibe and the people and the music were all incredible and made for a magical night.

It is Friday!!!!!!  Tonight, Tim Easton is celebrating the release of his new album American Fork with an outdoor show at Fond Object (6:00pm). The weather is about perfect.  Ariel Bui and Erin Rae and the Meanwhiles open the night.

Wow, we've reached the last day of August.  We are approaching Labor Day weekend in the USA. Here in Nashville, the live music possibilities for the coming days is mind-blowing and overwhelming. Bottom line, get out and see some live music.  For tonight, my eye is on The 5 Spot for the Grand Finale of David Olney's 4 out of 5 Wednesday Residency.  Recommended if you want to hear one of the best songwriters this town (known for songwriters) has ever seen. A man praised by his peers who have included Townes Van Zandt, Rodney Crowell, and more.  Also, recommended if you want to hear top rated musicians and the occasional burst of dramatic poetry.

After David Olney, I will be sticking around for a late show line-up that includes Jon Latham, Don Gallardo, and Stuffy Shmitt.  Birmingham's The Burning Peppermints open the night.

And the great music continues throughout the rest of the week and weekend.

Now, it is Wednesday.  After slogging through the first two days of the work week, we reach mid-week and feel the need to get "Wild"!
