Well... it hasn't been an easy week, but it is Friday and cooler temperatures have descended upon our fair Music City. Look for the Athens of the South Festival coming up tomorrow in East Park with great music and art and stuff. Darrin Bradbury, Adrian + Meredith and more will be there.
A bunch of other things that I can't remember right now. Get out and see some music, enjoy the weather, be good to each other.. I think that is enough for right now.
"It's The Whiskey That Eases The Pain" by Brian Langlinais
We start off our Featured Friday shuffle with another fine one from Right Hand Road by Nashville's own Brian Langlinais.
"Irish Washerwoman/Swallowtail Jig" by Tom Mason and the Blue Buccaneers
Nothing says Friday like dancing to a pirate jig. Next Friday, Tom Mason and the Blue Buccaneers will be celebrating the release of their new album Pirate Party with a pirate party at the Radio Cafe. I'm pretty sure some jigs will be danced and maybe a reel or two.
"Mastiff" by Ben Arthur
I've been writing about Ben Arthur's Call and Response for a while now, and it is out in the world now, so go get it. The album features "answer songs" written in response to other songs, short stories, poems etc. This particular story is a response to a short story written by Joyce Carol Oates that was published in the New Yorker. It is a great song which is not surprising because Arthur is a songwriters' songwriter. As a result of this song, Arthur has made some notable appearances with Oates - which is pretty darn cool.
"Empty Friend" by Crackerboots
Celebrating this week's Crackerboots show and next week's Residency finale, this is a song that I believe goes back to the first Crackerboots album and which is included on a new compilation, Love, Crackerboots which you can get if you come to next Wednesday's show. Luella and Bill Demain make some lovely music.
"Post Hole Digger" by 2Ton Bridge
Another from 2Ton Bridge and the album of the same name. One of my favorite tracks (among several). The album was produced and arranged by Marvin Etzioni.
"the EQUATOR" by Ugggy (prod. + x ÷ =)
Ugggy is the guy who provides the rap verses in Valued Customer. This is a solo mixtape he made this year. It is good. Really good. As I would have expected, but still amazingly good.
"Make Me a Blessing" by John Paul Daniel
Another one from All is Well. A prayer for all of us - believer or not, I think. The world has way too much hurt and bitterness and pain. Be someone who is an antidote to that.
"This Dog's Gonna Hunt" by Clark Paterson
East Nashville singer-songwriter Clark Paterson with another from The Final Tradition. You may recall that this album features Tim Carroll and Paul Niehaus backing Paterson.
"The Other Man" by McNary
A bunch of Nashville-area artists in this Featured Friday shuffle. Our second track this week from Above the Trees by Tim McNary. Dig his songs, his voice. McNary is someone I came across randomly several years ago, and I featured his music quite a bit. Then, I kind of lost track until I was at Jon Latham's house for his birthday a couple of years ago, and this guy left, and shortly after that someone said something about "McNary", and I was like, "Tim McNary?" and they said, "Yeah". Fortunately, I did finally meet McNary a short time later, and I'm glad because his current album is amazing.
"Something's Changed" by Laurence Jones
We close out the day and the week with some British blues guitar from young phenom Laurence Jones from his album Take Me High.
