Wild Wednesday Morning Shuffle - Mean All the World Mix

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

All of this happened a long time ago when the world was a very different place. Of course, none of us knew that at the time.
(From The Drift - A Novel by Joe Wolfe-Mazeres) Available at Amazon.com (Kindle edition also available)

I wanted to bring to your attention an upcoming show that might otherwise slip under your radar.  If you are in Nashville and free this coming Sunday (July 22), I recommend you head to Dee's Country Cocktail Lounge in Madison around 7pm.  Joe Goodkin (a Chicago songwriter who we have featured on E2TG) will be making a rare Nashville appearance, and some of my favorite Nashville songwriters are joining him (Joe Nolan, Tom Schreck, and Connor Rand).  I want to make sure I take maximum credit for my small role (with minimal effort) in getting these folks together for this show.  I think it will be a good one.

On to our "Wild Wednesday" shuffle:

The music in my phone's memory is a hodge podge of all sorts of things:  current and past E2TG featured artists/bands, older (and more recent) albums from my personal collection, music I have downloaded for various sources - just for fun, music given to me by various people that was not specifically intended to be featured on E2TG, and maybe some other things.   On Wednesdays, I hit shuffle on all those songs and see what comes up.  It's really interesting (to me at least) in that each shuffle has it's own "personality" or flavor. And, I never know what is going to come up.  I call Wednesday's "Wild" not because the list of songs is necessarily wildly eclectic (just sometimes) but because each shuffle is like a wildcard - you never know what it will be.

Let's go!

Wild Wednesday Morning Shuffle - A Little Patch of Sunlight Mix

United States Constitution, 25th Amendment:

Section 4. Whenever the Vice President and a majority of either the principal officers of the executive departments or of such other body as Congress may by law provide, transmit to the President pro tempore of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives their written declaration that the President is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office, the Vice President shall immediately assume the powers and duties of the office as Acting President.

Thereafter, when the President transmits to the President pro tempore of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives his written declaration that no inability exists, he shall resume the powers and duties of his office unless the Vice President and a majority of either the principal officers of the executive department or of such other body as Congress may by law provide, transmit within four days to the President pro tempore of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives their written declaration that the President is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office. Thereupon Congress shall decide the issue, assembling within forty-eight hours for that purpose if not in session. If the Congress, within twenty-one days after receipt of the latter written declaration, or, if Congress is not in session, within twenty-one days after Congress is required to assemble, determines by two-thirds vote of both Houses that the President is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office, the Vice President shall continue to discharge the same as Acting President; otherwise, the President shall resume the powers and duties of his office.

Okay - so Wednesday... we shuffle up all the songs on my phone,  and things tend to get "Wild".  For some reason, I always look forward to Wednesdays.  I think it is the unpredictable nature of these shuffles:  new music alongside older songs, friends alongside long-time favorites, songs I didn't even know were on my phone, and revisiting albums that had been featured some time back.

Let's go ahead and jump to it!

Monday Morning Music Shuffle - Island Life Mix

Whew! It's been awhile hasn't it?  Been around the world and back... or at least around Georgia and back.  Got back into Nashville in time to catch The End Men and The Slaughterhouse Chorus at fooBar last night. Word to the wise, if you get the chance to see either or both of these bands live, take it.  It was so amazingly awesome to finally meet Matthew and Liv from The End Men in person. They definitely rocked the house.  And yes this means I will have to tag The End Men... again... they are currently the second most tagged term on Ear to the Ground.

But, let's get back to what we do best... or most... or something... Pre-shuffle featured: Secret County (which I couldn't find represented on YouTube, NY Dolls, Jill Sobule and John Doe, Chad VanGaalen, Japandroids, The Grisly Hand, Phil Norman, Little and Ashley and Tim Lee 3.

Wednesday Morning Music Shuffle - Bobbin' and Pretendin' Mix

So lot's on my mind, but anyway, I had a great walk in accompanied by some cool music, and I wanted to share that music with you - because that is what I do:

The Morning gets under way with a recent Featured Artist from Knoxville Tennessee. It's Tim Lee 3 with the song Long Way to the Ground from their 2010 double album Raucous Americanus.

It's amazing and disturbing how often the next song seems incredibly timely.  Politics sometimes bore me, but I feel like a hypocrite talking to some people and not speaking out against the madness I hear coming from their mouths and their keyboards....

Your Racist Friend is one of the many classic tracks on They Might Be Giant's excellent third album - 1990s, Flood.

For the final two songs of today's mix, the shuffle machine takes us to the American West with a pair of songs from LA artists who were pioneers in the punk and alt-rock/Americana movement.

Dave Alvin (ex-Blasters and ex-X) released West of the West in 2006 which was his tribute to California roots music.  Included on the album was his cover of Merle Haggard's 1985 song, Kern River.  I swear I could listen to Dave Alvin's amazing vocals all day long.

(Here's Dave doing another River song)

(and here's Merle's version)

We close out the shuffle with Dave Alvin's one-time bandmate, John Doe of X, with a track from his 1990 solo debut Meet John Doe with the achingly beautiful It's Only Love.

(I couldn't find a video for It's Only Love... so as a bonus treat - here's Doe covering The Replacement's classic Here Comes a Regular)
