23.  "These Days Are Ours" by Candy Opera

We start this last segment of music for the week with a track from the seriously long-awaited debut album by Liverpool band Candy Opera.  It is their first new collection of music in over three decades. They recently released a couple of compilations of older music. A cool addition to our playlist.

24. "Roses All Around" by Soft Kill

Next up, we have a track from Dead Kids R.I.P. City - the new album by this Portland, Oregon based band whose sound is a great combination of post punk and shoegaze.  It dig this a lot. 

25. "Like Everyday" by Saccades

Next, we have the new single from this solo project of Manchester based (Edit: He may be based in Berlin) Nicholas Woods of The KVB.  Really cool electronic sounds to this one and chill vocals. Check it out.

26. "The Way I Am" by Joe Fox & the Frantics

Next, we have the new single from L.A. based indie rock band Joe Fox & the Frantics. Cool tune. 

27. "Dedicated" by Paperwing

Paperwing is the project of Swedish composer and producer Jenny Soovik.  Avant-garde pop with a dreamy sound backed by a formal musical education. A wicked combination. 

28. "BadxGood" by RUMBLE, Too Many T's

And, we close this segment of music and this week's Playlist with the latest single from Chinese Man Records and a track from the forthcoming new album from RUMBLE. A great way to close out the Playlist.

Well, here we are day whatever of this quarantine.  It is amazing to me how something so strange and unexpected has come to feel almost normal. There seems to be some disagreement about what will happen next and when. I think many of our torn - ready to get on with things but not wanting matters to be worse or to extend the recovery process.

As I have previously concluded, I do not think the world after the quarantine will be the same as the world before. For one thing, we've lost John Prine and Hal Wilner and so many more. Unfortunately, I am not sure that all businesses that closed will be able to reopen. I think big crowds will make some people uneasy for some time to come.

On the plus side, many of us are learning new skills or practicing old skills that had become rusty. I know I am learning to appreciate things that I may have previously taken for granted - simple things. There seems to still be so much we don't know and it is unclear what the future looks like until a vaccine is developed. Even if this quarantine ends, do we face another in the fall?

Music has been my solace for as long as I can remember, and that is still the case. I updated some releases last night, and I downloaded a ton of new music. I don't think any of new songs came up in today's shuffle, but many of them are added to the release list below and others will be in the next Featured Friday Playlist.

Tuesday Morning Shuffle

An interesting and very excellent shuffle today...

"Diggin' A Stigmata" by Benjamin Jason Douglas (from First World Blues)

Perhaps a little taste of Slump Test in this song from Ben Douglas's album First World Blues which came out a couple of years ago.  Slump Test was one of the two last bands I saw live before this began. I hope there is a Decline of Southern Civilization in all of our futures.

"Promised Land" by Beth McKee (from Sugarcane Revival)

Florida singer-songwriter Beth McKee was referred to me by Tim and Susan Bauer Lee of Bark, and I am so glad to have been made aware of her music and her work. Beth was a member of the country music band Evangeline in the late 80s and early 90s.

"Let's Get Happy" by The Buddies (from The Buddies)

Always good when a song by The Buddies comes up in the shuffle. And some good advice for any time but now in particular. Maybe not really advice, but more an exhortation.  The Buddies started in Nashville - where half the members still live (The Collins Family). The rest live in Michigan, Chicago, and Missouri (Coley Kennedy, Pete Javier, and Jeremy Barrett).

"No Recover" by Eric Bachmann (from No Recover)

Next up, we have the title track from the 2018 album by Eric Bachmann (Crooked Fingers and Archers of Loaf).  He was born in North Carolina, currently lives in Athens, Georgia and has lived many places including Nashville, Tennessee.

"Cane River Blues" by Adam Carroll

We close with a track from the 1998 debut album South of Town by the singer-songwriter from Texas. A great finish to the shuffle.

I have been struggling with what to write in this space, and it usually ends up being some mixture of hope and despair - which - come to think of it - sounds about right.  I miss going out to shows. While I appreciate the importance of live streaming in these times, for me the experiences are not equal. Mostly, I miss hanging with my friends in person. I miss hugs and all that.

But, I am okay. And, finding ways to deal with the troubles that come. I am still WAY behind sorting through all the new music still being sent to me. I have a three day quarantine weekend coming up, so maybe I can make some progress.

Meanwhile, I still have a ton of music saved to my phone so the shuffles won't stop... let's go!

The Artist with a "Big A"

Last night's Celebration of Life for David Olney was a  "not exactly somber"/"not exactly light-hearted" affair.  In many ways, the event was a perfect fit for the man.

Here are my impressions as they are coming to me as I write this.  The first word that came to mind as I arrived at the Belcourt Theater was community - that word has been on the fore-front of my mind lately anyway. But, I was struck by all the familiar faces I recognized waiting in line to enter, and that sense only increased as the night wore on. 

There were definitely some heavy-hitting in attendance.  Emmylou Harris arrived with The Road Mangler Phil Kaufman, Hayes Caryl showed up, Mary Gauthier and more. It was a packed house. 

The first thing I noticed was Olney's guitar with his trademark fedora balanced on top. The house band was David's band - Ward Stout, Sergio Webb, Daniel Seymour, and Justin Amaral.  They took the stage and played some of David's music as instrumentals - which was an emotional moment. 

(An aside - one recurring theme of the night was that David Olney was an Artist (with a capital "A").  Watching his band - both during the waiting period and during the celebration proper, I was struck with the feeling that not only was David Olney an Artist, but he surrounded himself with Artists. I have had the opportunity to witness Sergio Webb's guitar playing up close, and while I am not a musician, even I could recognize that there was something extraordinary about the way he coaxed sounds from his guitar. I have also had the chance to see Justin Amaral in various settings, and his talent and artistry is unquestioned - see him with The Fats Kaplin Gang if you need proof. Daniel Seymour, too have seen in a variety of settings, and seeing him play stand-up bass is treat no matter the style of music.  As far as I recall, I have only ever seen Ward Stout play with David Olney - but I recall when David first added him and how quickly he established himself as part of David's sound.  Nashville is filled with incredibly talented musicians, but it was clear to me last night that these artists where something special - and I sure hope they find many opportunities to play together in the future.  

The night was filled with performances and speakers.  The stories shared were a reminder of the way David Olmey touched peoples' lives. The musical performances were a testament to the greatest of his songs and to the way he inspired other artists. 

The musical guests were all amazing in their own way.  I feel like if I try to name some that I will forget another. 

I've run out of time - so there will be more later. Suffice it to say, that the event was yet another gift from the man who gave us all so much of himself.

Shelter From the Storm:

Last night's show at Dee's in Madison was so beautiful. I believe a ton of money was raised, the music was so impressively Nashville, a huge turn out. For me, it was my first time reconnecting my community since Tuesday morning's storm - and so many of them were there. It seemed like I couldn't turn around or turn a corner without seeing someone new. It is one thing to see a Facebook post saying someone was okay, but it was something else to see those people in the flesh and to hug them.

I honestly don't have much to say about the music - everything I heard was phenomenal and I know I probably missed more than I saw - there were so many people to hug and talk to. It was appropriate that Jon Latham acted as emcee. Not many have his ability to engage a crowd and not many can appreciate the significance of each of the musical guests.

Big thanks to Brian Wright, Sally Jaye, and Cafe Rooster Records for making this happen. Thanks to everyone for all of the hugs and kindness. And thanks to Dee's and their staff for being awesome.

I think it is important to say - even those of us who were minimally or only indirectly affected by the devastation are dealing with shock and loss. I am reminded of something I heard about the circles of grief.  Basically (and simplified), it would be in appropriate for me to unburden my feelings about this tragedy with someone who suffered a significant and tangible loss due to the storm, but it is not only okay but important for me to talk to someone who was affected in the same way or less than I was affected.  I don't know if I explained that well, but what I am trying to say is that I have no doubt that this disaster has affected me, and it is unhealthy for me to feel guilty for having those feelings.

As I am still struggling to find time to do everything I want to do, I thought I would take some time to highlight some recent and upcoming new releases of interest.  As always, the complete list can be found at the bottom of every daily post (and it is updated constantly).

Some of this music has been added to my phone for inclusion in the daily shuffles, some has been included in the Featured Friday Playlist....

Recent Releases:
2/07 - Chicago Farmer - Flyover Country (LP) 

Sixth full-length album. Recorded with Band of Heathens.  I understand that Darrin Bradbury will be opening some dates for Chicago Farmer.

2/07 - The Flyin' A's - No Holds Barred (LP)

Austin Texas based husband and wife duo release their fourth full-length album featuring an all-star cast of Austin musicians. 

2/07 - Christopher Paul Stelling - Best of Luck (LP)

I caught Stelling at the ANTI- Records showcase at AMA this past fall, but his association with E2TG goes back to 2012 when he was a featured artist for November/December in that year. At that time, he was living in New York City, and I believe he was closely associated with some of the other New York bands we were featuring - like The End Men, The Disappointment, and The Gypsy West. 

 2/07 - Sammy Brue - "Teenage Mayhem" and "Crash Test Kid" (singles)

Some new music from the teen sensation. The full album is due out in June, but he released the title track and another single on Friday.  Sounding great. He first gained attention portraying a young Justin Townes Earle on an album cover and video, but he has flourished on the strength of his songwriting and relentless pursuit of music.

2/14 - Grant Peeples - Bad Wife (LP)

Excited for this release.  I have been a huge fan of Grant Peeples since meeting him at the first Wild Ponies Happy Hour I ever attended back in 2014?.  For his latest album, he has recorded songs by female songwriters (including Telisha Williams of the aforementioned Wild Ponies).

 2/14 - Kalee Smyth - "Bring Our Love Down" (single)

Great to hear new music from Kalee Smyth.  The full album drops in March.  As a member of The Western Shore, she played the first ever "E2TG Presents" show at The Building. For this new album, she has assembled a team with some majorly impressive credits ( including Kasey Musgraves, Usher, The Band Perry, George Jones, Diana Krall, and Hank III)

5/08 - Brian Wright and the Sneak-Ups - Lapse of Luxury

Super stoked to have a release date for the new Brian Wright album (E2TG Artist of the Year 2016). I got a preview of this music at his residency last year, and I have been so excited for this news ever since. 

In my rush to get things done and do everything and be everywhere, I have had uninvited thoughts fill my brain, so I have to speak to those voices, and I hope maybe someone else who needs to hear this will hear it.  The dilemma/conundrum/catch-22 in which I often find myself is that if I go out to every show I want to (and even then have to miss two or three others), then I don't get much writing done and I start to feel irrelevant.  But, if I stay in more often and miss a bunch of shows to get writing done, then I feel irrelevant because I am not going out.   Today, I just need to say, that nothing I do or don't do, nowhere I go or don't go - none of that makes me irrelevant. I am relevant even if I don't go out and even if I don't write. I write and go out because I love doing those things - not to make myself relevant.

I also need to say, that I should not compare myself to anyone.  I often judge myself harshly for not getting enough done (ignoring the fact that I have two radio shows, a music blog, a full-time job, and more). I give myself hell for resting, for relaxing, for goofing off, for whatever... I should stop that.*

*I have to say, I have improved in all of this greatly in the last few years, but I still need the occasional reminder.

I realize that I never actually stated this, but clearly December has been solely about recapping the first eleven months of 2018.  I have a ton of new music ready to go in January.   Today, we are up to August 2018.  Back in August, we didn't think summer would ever end.  And it didn't completely end until sometime in October (or at least that is how I remember it).
