I guess this is a good time to mention that I will be taking some time off next week. I will probably post some old E2TG shuffles over on the Facebook page during the week. Included in my time off is a trip to Athens, Georgia to check out E2TG Favorites The Foresters at the Athens Pop Fest. I am officially stoked about that.
Well, it is Wednesday - where we shuffle up all of the songs on my phone and see what comes up...
Today, we have some "current featured albums" and the return of some old friends...

#E2TG is not at SXSW (This is a CXCW plug by the way)

If, like me, you are not at the South by Southwest confab (conflag?) (whatever), you probably have some good reasons. Can't get off work, lack of funds, the beer is too expensive, too many damn hipsters, it involves putting on shoes --- the list goes on.
For the last four years, there has been a great alternative to SXSW. I hope by now, you are familiar with Couch by Couchwest -where the beer is cheap and the only hipster is you. CXCW is an on-line music festival featuring a staggering number and variety of talented folks who submitted specially made videos specifically for the festival. Often, the videos feature couches. Often they don't. They may be filmed in bathrooms, kitchens, garages, on front or back porches, or in wide-open fields. Jonny Fritz when he still went by Jonny Corndawg recorded one from the inside of a drainage pipe.
The atmosphere
If you are a regular Ear to the Ground reader you probably already know about CXCW and I hope you've been keeping up. The festival is on day four, and if you haven't tuned it yet, you have some catching up to do. Go now to Couchbycouchwest.com.

We expect to see The End Men, Miss Shevaughn and Yuma Wray, and much, much more the before the festival wraps up.
Among the most buzz-worthy moments so far has been Jamie Painter's cover of Jason Isbell's Cover Me Up which has earned a recommendation from Mr. Isbell himself. Oh and Two Mule Blues set shit on fire.
So, in conclusion, I get why you're not at South by Southwest. I'm not there with you, but why the heck aren't you at Couch by Couchwest? Shoes are optional and probably not encouraged.

Monday Morning Music Shuffle - A Few of My Favorite Things 2013 Mix - Pt. One

It's here... time to begin our look back at the year which was 2013. In true E2TG style, for the remainder of 2013 we will shuffling up a special playlist which includes some of our favorite songs from the past year. I'll let the song speak for themselves, but we will be highlighting some of our favorite E2TG related albums of the year as we move along.
About Band of the Year. After two successful Band of the Year polls (by page view numbers, Band of the Year and Band of the Month polls dominate our statistics page for most viewed), so it is only after careful consideration that I've decided to forgo the Band of the Year poll for 2013. Basically, it comes down to the fact that I would rather see independent bands cooperating and collaborating than competing. We had some memorably good fun with some of our polls - especially the first annual Band of the Year poll and the legendary February 2012 Band of the Month poll that came down to a dogfight between MAKAR and The End Men. As time went by, and I began featuring more and more bands, the idea no longer seemed to be in the spirit of this site.
I will be naming the third annual Band of the Year within the next couple of weeks. Meanwhile, enjoy yourself as we relive this year that almost was. If you feel so inclined, share some of these posts with your friends near and far.
Before we jump into the first of our Favorites' shuffles for 2013, I need to rectify something....
#E2TG Hall of Fame (Notable Omissions):
More names will be added to the Hall of Fame in early 2014 - and my progress on the completion of the Hall of Fame page has hit some unexpected delays, but I've became increasingly uncomfortable knowing that two of my favorite E2TG artists have not been added to the Hall as of yet.
1. Ubiquity Machine/Howard Rabach - In using the tagging feature to determine our Hall of Fame, one thing I failed to take into account were the many fine bands/artists you came to prominence in the months when E2TG was still housed on the now defunct Posterous site. Howard Rabach was one of the first readers of the blog to step out of the shadows. His band, Ubiquity Machine, was one of our early Bands of the Week. The band finished second in our first annual Band of the Year poll, and he has remained a good friend of Ear to the Ground ever since. UM has been kind of dormant of late, as Howard has been doing some freelance stuff. Check out his Facebook page here. So it is with great pleasure, that I usher in UM/HR to a spot of honor in our Hall of Fame.
2. The Grimm Generation - Another thing I failed to take into account in my tagging system of Hall of Fame eligibility is the variant tagging which sometimes occurs. Blogger places a 200 character limit on tagging so sometimes I have to shorten band names - like leaving the "The" off. That is the only explanation I have for The Grimm Generation not being in our top 20 tagged artists. Still this unique and frankly awesome collective from Connecticut (headed up by the amazing Jason Krug and Carmen Champagne), are well deserving of a prime spot in our Hall of Fame. Hell their latest album, The Big Fame even has "fame" in the title. They have consistently made music which I love and which seems timeless in its wonderfulness.

Tuesday Morning Music Shuffle - Dream-like Waiting Mix

No "Shuffle" because I got a ride from the car dealership to my office, but we did have a "Pre-Shuffle" which I guess makes the "Pre-Shuffle" just a "Shuffle"... or maybe I'm over-thinking... again.
Legendary Los Angeles band X announced this morning that they are going on tour with legendary New York band Blondie. The tour includes a stop at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville... I wonder if my Facebook "friendship" with DJ Bonebrake will help me score tickets?
Today's Shuffle includes a delightful mix of Pop and Punk but no necessarily Pop-Punk plus some that may or may not be considered Pop or Punk, but I'll leave that for you to decide.

Friday Morning Music Shuffle - Taking It Up a Notch Mix

Happy 72nd Birthday Robert Zimmerman and also to that strange young man named Dylan...
Well, well, well... I thought we had covered a lot of musical ground yesterday, but we may have just topped ourselves. You be the judge.
Pre-shuffle:
We start things out with a performance of a Ukrainian folk song.
1. "Ой Полечко, Поле (Oj Polechko, Pole" by Katarina Ljahovic, Mike Romaniak, Patrick Power and Stephen Kreuger (by the way, Patrick Power is better known to E2TG readers as 1/2 of Valued Customer, and he may well be a musical genius in my book)
2. "Old Friend" by Sea Wolf (another cool track from the L.A. based Indie Rock band who take their name from a Jack London novel)
3. "This is a Notice" by Mic Harrison and the High Score (This is Knoxville Rock! Mic Harrison was a member of the V-Roys and Superdrag before teaming up with The High Score. This song is pretty damn awesome raver.)
4. "Psycho Killer" (B-Side featuring Arthur Russell) by Talking Heads (a recently released alternate take of the Talking Heads classic featuring a well utilized Cello)
5. "Only Sixteen" by Craig Douglas (1959 cover of a Sam Cooke song by a UK Pop singer)
6. "Boys Keep Me Up at Night" by Jeanette Lynne (another gem from the You've Got Me album)

Tuesday Morning Music Shuffle - Break on Through Mix

Well all sorts of bad things happened yesterday. Sending love and prayers and thoughts to the people of Oklahoma.
Also, remembering Ray Manzarek of The Doors who passed away yesterday. A true creative genius who shaped many generations of music.
We got some songs - as we are reminded again that Music Heals....
Today.... Pre-Shuffle-wise.
"More of the Same" by Britain. (feat. Clark Beckham) - this is the first released track from a forthcoming EP. Been digging on this track for a little while. Production by my good friend Hayden Coleman. Representing the 615 - but this is different.
"Run Like Hell" by Drive He Said
"Sugar" by Paper Route
Wakin On a Pretty Day" by Kurt Vile - this nine plus minute song transitions us into the Shuffle of the day.

Some may say, I take way too much pride in presenting morning shuffles that span such a diverse landscape of musical marvels. Some may say I would be far more successful if I focused on one genre or only wrote about those certain "buzz worthy" artists that you can read about in all of the other music blogs. Some may say, I should stick to the script and just echo back the language of the music promoters and publicists.
I don't bother responding except to offer up today's pre-shuffle and shuffle.

Monday Morning Music Shuffle - Swoony Day Mix

I'm back after an extended and mostly rainy weekend. Dreary, drizzly morning drive and walk, made more than tolerable by the superlative collection of fine tunes and tracks. By the way, my Current Month Playlist that I shuffle up for the Morning Shuffle had dropped to about 150 late last week, but over the weekend it has skyrocketed up above 200 again. We'll begin chipping away, as we present some Pre-Shuffle and Shuffle Shuffle tunes for this, the 6th day of May.
