I guess this is what they call the home stretch.... As we head into the final week of the Earie Awards for 2017 (as well as the final week of shuffles for 2017), I find myself reflecting on the year that is winding down. On many, many levels, it was a difficult year, but I remain bolstered by the incredibly wonderful people I have come to know and the incredible variety of amazing music that has come to my attention just because I started writing this blog.
The highs of this year were high and the lows were low, and I prepare to enter 2018 with much uncertainty as to what it will bring. I have been pondering some tweaks to E2TG for the coming year - something I have done periodically over the six and half years of this site. I'm not sure what those will be. Certainly there are things that don't work like they used to (like my inability to embed my video playlists). I guess, I'll just say - stay tuned.
Let's jump right into the shuffle and the Earies for Monday December 18, 2017....

Trending Tuesday Morning Shuffle - Emotionally Numb Mix

On my mind... life seems to be about finding some sense of balance that works for you as an individual. At least this is true for me. Whether it is about staying in vs. going out or about finding the beauty and joy in life vs. recognizing, exposing, and fighting against injustices. I don't think everyone's balance is the same. And to be honest, it's a little bit daunting to think I know what is best for everyone else.
Anyway, I went out last night - after working all day and then recording a Double Shot show (which will air November 4 with special guests Andy and Lee from Eight O'Five Jive). Headed to the High Watt where Allen Thompson opened for Austin Lucas and Brian Singer. I have to say (again) that I could listen to Allen Thompson sing just about every night. Brian Singer and Austin Lucas are wrapping up their The Crooner and The Clown tour. Brian Singer is a comedian. I love the idea of a comedian and a singer-songwriter touring together. I don't see comedians very often - mainly because I end up going to see music. Singer was really funny. Austin Lucas was amazing as he is every time I see him. He sings with such emotional honesty and his stage presence is disarmingly genuine and funny. Jon Latham joined him on a few songs which was cool. I was with Jon the first time I saw Austin Lucas.
It is Tuesday and time to see what is "Trending" on E2TG - as we work our way through the new music playlist - currently just under 400 songs but I have tons of e-mails and messages to go through. It's probably close to time to clear off some songs that have lingering in the playlist for a fair amount of time (especially those from albums that have been featured extensively). Those songs will stay on my phone memory for possible "Wild Wednesday" shuffle feature....

Well.... yesterday was pretty much an all-around crappy day. Waking the news from Las Vegas and the finding out about Tom Petty.
There is much I want to say about Tom Petty - some of which I have heard other people say better than I could.
As a writer, music has always inspired me. First writing fiction, a line from a song would trigger a story. I remember once, being stuck on a short story I was writing, and then going to see some songwriters play and getting lost in their music and suddenly the story coming together in my mind - no so much a direct reaction to a song or a line, but just some cosmic inspiration reaching out of the melody and telling me how the story needed to go.
"Free Fallin'" I can't say that it is my favorite Tom Petty song - but I do confess to loving it - but back around the turn of this century, I was in the midst of writing 365 short, short stories based upon secondary (and incidental) characters from my novel, The Drift (I ended up writing 388 stories) and a whole series of these stories was inspired by "Free Fallin'" - "All the vampires walkin' through the valley/ Move west down Ventura Blvd./ And all the bad boys are standing in the shadows/ All the good girls are home with broken hearts"
Music is important to me. And yesterday was a hard day, but music will ultimately heal. I find myself saying this quite often, but it is what I believe to be the truth.
It would have been easy to just stay in last night, but I chose to go out and listen to people make music. It was just what I needed. Thanks to Brian Milligram, John Dennis, Jason Erie, and Josh Gray for being what I needed. There was not much to smile about yesterday but hearing Josh Gray singing The Dead Milkmen's song, "Punk Rock Girl" (for the second time) made me smile.
So, I'm moving on... with some Trending Tuesday music for this third day of October 2017

In fact, the editor of one of the lesser known music blogs PASTE called me to congratulate me and ask me for some advice on how to attract readers.
This is all true because I wrote it, and any "evidence" you see to the contrary is just FAKE NEWS.

On a more serious note (all though the sentiment behind my little joke is very serious), I wanted to remind my readers (both of you ;-) ) that I am taking next week off - so no regular shuffles... maybe a special post or two (but maybe not).
It is Friday - the end of another work week, and as we do, we have our "Featured Friday" shuffle - where we shuffle up songs from our New Music playlist.

It seems like there was a time when we could disagree about many things, but there were certain basic truths that we could agree upon. Like "The sky is blue and therefore we need to do ____. " "No, the sky IS blue, but we should do ____." Now, it seems like it is more... "The sky is blue and therefore we need to do ______." "No! It is the fake media that has you convinced that the sky is blue. The sky is red and therefore we MUST do ______."
I am short of solutions right now. It seems like all of us are so far apart. Common ground seems to be a lost concept. I guess I am thinking about the Congressional testimony yesterday, and how differently people can view it. I always want to try to understand on some level how those who think differently than me see the world, and on some levels I can, but regardless of the circumstances and experiences that lead a person to hold a particular set of beliefs. There SHOULD be some points on which almost all people can agree. Shouldn't there?

The Foresters new album is out today, Listen for me twice on the radio tomorrow - Double Shot's 1 year anniversary show and then right after that I will be filling in out Nashville U. Gina will be interviewing Rayvon Pettis who will be playing a few songs, and I will be spinning some Nashville tunes from the past and the present.
It is Friday, and on Friday, we bring you a shuffle from our "New Music Playlist". We call it Featured Friday - as these "new music" tracks are artists, albums, or songs that we are featuring.

Featured Friday Morning Shuffle - Sleepless in Nashville Mix

Honestly, I try to keep my commentaries at least semi-cordial - not that the current administration does that not even necessarily deserves it, but there have been so many straws. Seriously, how more reprehensible can this administration be? I can't believe this will go on for four more years. I just can't. About "covfefe" - you know if you are someone who cares about other human beings - then this year has been horrendously painful. You got to get your laughs when you can. Every once in a while, I will visit the Facebook page of one of the handful of "T-Rump" supporters I am friends with (I generally do well with muting these posts from my newsfeed). Anyway, I wanted to check in to see what they were saying about "covfefe" - and there is actually a (now debunked) piece that claims the "word" is a translation of an Arabic term meaning We Will Stand or some such. By debunked, I mean the original article has some convoluted Google Translation that seems to indicate the meaning. It is based upon a false use and reading of Google Translate. Which means, even if the president intended to use it in this way, he was basing the usage on a erroneous source (not the first time there). But, it got me thinking about a bigger issue... let's say the translation had been correct and that had been the intent of the "Tweet"... imagine if it had been President Obama who had tweeted an Arabic term - can you even imagine the outrage from the right? Ugh! Look, I don't care about weird tweets, I worry about the damage being done to this nation's reputation and standing in the world. Honestly, I would be among the first to tell you that the Democratic party is less than ideal, and I hope they will improve and make some adjustments in policy and strategy, BUT, the situation now is so dire that I feel even some options I previously viewed as odious are looking better,,,,,

It's easy to get pigeonholed and I have worked hard to keep E2TG as wildly inclusive as possible, and the variety of submissions I get reflects that I am succeeding on that count - at least.

Got to get out and see Ben de la Cour and Wild Ponies at The 5 Spot. We are seriously spoiled with all the great music here in town.
I worked a shift for the WXNA Pledge Drive. Go ahead and give if you haven't this is community radio at its best. And with the internet, the community is where ever you are. wxnafm.org.
I might as well take every opportunity afforded to me to remind you of our next E2TG Residency show. Cafe Rooster Records are an important part of this community. So, not only will you hear great music from Sally Jaye, Brian Wright, Darrin Bradbury, Jon Latham, and special guest Rorey Carroll - they will be collecting donations of bug spray and jugs of water for Southern Alliance for People and Animal Welfare to be taken to the homeless camps.

Trending Tuesday Morning Shuffle - Wind Together Mix

Just for today, I need to find beauty in the world. This is not to say that I am denying the ugliness or even to fail to acknowledge that my privilege plays a big part in my ability to "shut out" the ugliness and to focus on the beauty, But, just for today, for my own sanity and well-being, I feel the need to recognize and acknowledge all of the beauty. Love is beautiful - no matter how it is expressed or by whom. Truth is beautiful - even when it is attacked and ignored. People are beautiful - no matter how society chooses to define them. Art is beautiful - regardless of its commercial potential. Clouds are beautiful - even gray and ominous ones. You are beautiful - regardless of what you see when you look in a mirror - not matter what anyone tells you, no matter how you feel.
In other (good) news, my line-up for the E2TG 6th Anniversary month-long residency in May at The 5 Spot has been finalized. The final three shows will be announced very soon. Don't forget: Mark Robinson Band will be jamming on May 3, and Jon Latham (and his band) will be rocking the house on May 10. A Music City legend will be headlining on May 17. One of Nashville's newest record labels will be running the night on May 24. And a local favorite and the current incarnation of a long-time E2TG favorite will be laying it down on May 31. Stay Tuned and clear your calendar.

Featured Friday Morning Shuffle - Downslide Mix

Sleight of hand. Misdirection. Distraction. The con men all use these tricks to keep the "marks" from seeing what is really going on. Do not be mislead. Keep your eye on the ball. Focus. Resist.
Meanwhile, here is a song from 2013 #E2TG Band of the Year - The End Men which is sadly relevant once again.

Okay. Last night, I headed out west - West Nashville that is... my first time at Betty's Grill. Probably my first show that far out west since Stone Fox closed. Pretty cool DIY venue.
A pretty cool line-up of rock and roll music - as the kids call it. Local band Sad Baxter opened the night with some grungy, thumping sounds. I dig them a bunch. I had previously seen them backing up Bill Eberle at Andrew Leahey's CD Release show last August.
Next up was The Regrets from Brooklyn. I had previously posted one of their tracks from a Mama Coco's Funky Kitchen compilation (btw, I don't remember all this stuff - the search box is my friend). I dug their music and expect to hear much more. The Regrets are currently on tour with another Brooklyn and MCFK related band, NO ICE who played next.
NO ICE is lead by Jamie Frey. They are a six piece band and they pretty much freaking rock. The band includes Sam Braverman of Logan X* (whose latest release we are spinning these days). About NO ICE - great songs, great energy. I had posted about them before - also from a MCFK comp - but man I am a fan now for real.
*It was great to finally meet Sam in person. He played me an unreleased Logan X song which sounds amazing. Look for new music from Logan X coming soon.
Closing the night was another local band, The Mumzees. They are very young (of course - most bands are very young to me....). The lead singer was wearing a The Fall t-shirt - which was a good sign, and wow! I don't get out to "punk" shows very often, and so, it is nice to be reminded that the
"kids" are still alright. It was loud and distorted and aggressive (at times), and it was awesome.
All in all, a nice change of pace for me, and nice to get out to a show - after spending most of the week working on stuff.

Alrighty then, I am back after a long weekend. As usual, I got a lot done and feel like I could have done more. Saturday night, I took in Jon Latham, Josh Morris, and Sean Quinn at The Country. Excellent music, and good times.
Sunday, it was Stone Cupid (trio with Julie Christensen, Chris Tench, and Sergio Webb) at Studio 62 on Main Street in East Nashville. Always good to see and hear them play.
Meanwhile, the surreal disaster that is our current administration in the US continues to defy... well fill in the blank.. common sense, decency, legality, reality. A "campaign"rally - a month after inauguration... filled with at least 13 factually questionable statements... including an allusion to an attack "last night" against Sweden which never happened.
Here's the deal, writing this blog, I have inadvertently posted things that turned out to be incorrect. I once (based upon a wikipedia article) stated that a noted producer co-wrote a song. When I was corrected, by the writer of said song, I immediate edited my post to include the correct information (while leaving the incorrect information struck out) and I apologize for the error.
In contrast, when this administration is called out on misstatements, they double down, the shift blame, or they respond in some bizarre fashion that leaves their followers to believe the lie to be the truth. (i.e. many supporters of the current administration still believe the "media" is covering up an attack on Sweden).
Oh and let's not forget the non-stop attacks on the free press - who dare to ask "hard questions" and challenge untruths.

Alrighty then, I am back after a long weekend. As usual, I got a lot done and feel like I could have done more. Saturday night, I took in Jon Latham, Josh Morris, and Sean Quinn at The Country. Excellent music, and good times.
Sunday, it was Stone Cupid (trio with Julie Christensen, Chris Tench, and Sergio Webb) at Studio 62 on Main Street in East Nashville. Always good to see and hear them play.
Meanwhile, the surreal disaster that is our current administration in the US continues to defy... well fill in the blank.. common sense, decency, legality, reality. A "campaign"rally - a month after inauguration... filled with at least 13 factually questionable statements... including an allusion to an attack "last night" against Sweden which never happened.
