Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

It is the start of another week, and that means it is time for a Music City Monday shuffle...

As you may or may not know or remember, I have a massive playlist of Nashville music* past and present and every Monday, I hit shuffle on that playlist and see what comes up... here is what came up today.

*Music made by people who live or have lived in Nashville (whether or not the music itself was made in Nashville or before or after the person/band was based here).

We highlight the first ten songs of the Playlist below, but the whole playlist is an interesting mix of a lot of different styles of music.

E2TG 3/01/2021 - Music City Monday and More - Signals Mix (Big Sleep Remix)

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

Time marches on (pun intended and sorry about that).  It is March which means we are rapidly approaching the one year anniversary of the Nashville tornado and the lockdowns. All of that seems so long ago now - like a lifetime ago. I am happy to see Nashville's COVID statistics improving and the vaccine rollout starting to pick-up steam. There still seems to be a lot of confusion, inequities, and inconsistencies.. but at least progress is being made. I worry about subsequent spikes as precautions are laxed, but I hope that concern ends up being unfounded.

There is still much division and uncertainty and strife in the world, but I feel more hopeful now. I also have to acknowledge that I am exhausted. But, I know the need to remain active and diligent continues. I also know that the fact that it is a choice for me is a function of privilege.

All that is on my mind on a kind of dreary first day of March.

Our Featured Friday Playlist Recap continues on with songs 11-16:

11. "Annie" by Becca Mancari
The first single from the forthcoming EP (Juniata - March 19) by this Nashville based singer-songwriter.
12. "Sin City" by The Barefoot Movement
A nifty cover of the Gram Parsons/Chris Hillman song by the Nashville band that is quickly becoming an E2TG favorite.
13. "Anchor" by John Keathley
Next up, we have the fantastic new single from this Nashville based singer-songwriter. The track was produced by our old friend Josh Waters of the Rock and Roll Basement.
14. "Witchpunkrockstar - Heavy Mental Mix" by My Life With the Thrill Kill Kult
Abruptly, up next we have a track from the newly released compilation of previously unreleased remixes from the gothic rock legends. The Chicago band began in 1987. These remixes are by band member Buzz McCoy.
15. "Hold You Tonight" by Stephen Flatt
Next up, we have the lead single from the forthcoming (April 16) debut album (Cumberland Bones) from Nashville based singer-songwriter and great-nephew of Lester Flatt. A really wonderful song.
16. "Numb" by NT
And we close with the debut single from this Bay area artist with diverse influences and fresh vision of quality modern pop music.  A great way to close out this segment of music.

E2TG 10/09/2020 - Featured Friday - No Sound Mix (Save the Day Remix)

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

Well, we have reached the end of a another week.  I am so ready for the weekend.  I am going to start a few hours early....

I will say before we dig into the brand new E2TG Featured Friday Playlist - VOTE! Make a plan.  Check with your State and local election officials. There is a definite and concerted effort in some locations to suppress voting.  Don't let them win.  Know your rights and exercise your rights.

One more thing, before I just jump into the music - at this point, the people I truly don't understand are the undecided voters - I understand them less than Trump voters. Trump voters are part of a cult, so their behavior is predictable and easily understandable if you understand how cults work.  But, the people who are on the fence - that I have a hard time understanding. To me the choice is stark and obvious.

E2TG 9/11/2020 - 19 Years - Clarity Mix (Solitude Remix)

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

Today is the 19th Anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. I think this event affected everyone, but definitely not equally.  In the subsequent years, I have met people who were very deeply, profoundly, and directly affected by the attacks.

For me, I was at work - and I got a news alert by e-mail that a plane had collided with the World Trade Center. I may be wrong, but I think the first report I saw said it was a small plane (or may I that was just what I read into it - like why would a big jet be flying so low over the City... I turned on the radio and I think tried to pull up something on-line. What I do remember is hearing about the second plane and immediately knowing that this was not an accident. I wasn't able to watch tv until after work. I remember walking outside at lunch time and looking up and wondering if there would be more attacks.  And I remember what a beautiful day it was.

What I remember in the days after was a sense of unity. Not just the country but allies all over the world. Of course this didn't last, and in some sense it was an illusion... but it seemed genuine and real (and in some ways it was).

I had recently signed up for an acting workshop put on by the Parks department. I think we had maybe met once before 9/11.  The goal of the workshop was to create and put on a production - the attacks dominated the production we created. We used parts of several different works - The Good Person of Szechwan, Waiing for Godot, the poem, "The Creation" by James Weldon Johnson, as well as bits we wrote ourselves. The participants were a diverse group and it was an amazing experience to hear different perspectives about what was happening. I considered myself well read and aware, but I learned so much about how other people experience the world.

Nineteen years... seems a long time ago and yet it seems like it just happened recently.

Before we get into this week's Featured Friday Playlist, we have a couple of non-Spotify songs to feature.  The first is the lead single from the first Stuffy Shmitt album in eight years. Stuff Happens will be out December 4 (and look for a few more singles between now and then).  It is so great to hear new Stuffy Shmitt music, and he has worked with some of our favorite people on this album.  The song premiered last week - and you can check it out HERE.

Meanwhile, a group of Nashville musicians who used to perform once a month on Sunday afternoons at Dee's Country Cocktail Lounge got together - virtually - during quarantine to record this gorgeous cover of the George Harrison song "Give Me Love (Give Me Peace)".  They named their new venture Sunday Someday - on the hope that we will all gather again on a Sunday... someday.  Below is a link to the song and the video. Sunday Someday features Annie McCue, Megan Palmer, Bob Lewis, Jason Quicksall, Jonathan Beam, and Erin Nelson.

It is Friday and that does mean and whole new Featured Friday Playlist. As always, I am proud of this list, I invite you to listen and follow the Playlist and to support the artists you like.

The first seven songs are listed below.  We will feature the rest of the Playlist in this space next week.

E2TG 5/25/2020 - Music City Monday - Hobo Bill Mix (Little Caney Remix)

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

We are back after an extended weekend.  I remain skeptical about the reopening, and I fear that many people are acting like the pandemic is over when it is not.

I am choosing to stay in most of the time, and frankly, it is less stressful for me to do so than to go out and worry about myself and others.  That is just for me. And to be honest, staying in IS beginning to wear on me - especially seeing so many people getting out.

I think what makes me angry is that the people who refuse to wear masks and practice social distancing (and this can be seen all over the country) make it more difficult for me to consider easing back out.  Not to mention how polarized this all has become.  I fear being out in a mask and being attacked by someone without a mask. I don't know if that is a reasonable fear, but I have heard about such things and so my fear is real even if it is unreasonable.

We are living in strange times, and it does not help to have a President who purposefully spreads misinformation and seems to relish in the division and chaos. So, I am restless and reluctant and fearful.  On the other hand, I do better than some at keeping to myself, and I am trying (not always with success) to stay connected via social media and the like.

Ah....Onward!

Continuing our review of our Featured Friday Playlist (songs 7-12)

7. "Life During Wartime" by Nichole Wagner
Austin, Texas singer-songwriter from the EP Dance Songs for the Apocalypse.  This is a really cool cover of the Talking Heads classic. The EP also includes covers of Sia, Rilo Kiley, Kate & Anna McGarrigle, and Neil Young.
8. "Sunrise" by The Mouse Outfit (feat. One Only)
New track from the Manchester Hip Hop collective that we featured extensively last year.
9. "Pray for Me, Pray for You" by Glass Cabin
New single from a new Nashville based duo project featuring Jess Brown and Dave Flint.
10. "One Day At a Time (Baby)" by Jake Stopar
Recent single by this Chicago based singer-songwriter. Stopar is the guitarist for the Chicago band The North and Wells Band.
11. "Runes" by BYSTS
Next, we have the latest single  (from a forthcoming new album) by the L.A. duo. Dark and loud and really awesome music.
12. "Not Me. Us" by Ethan Gold
And, we close today's recap with this single from the L.A. by way of S.F. singer-songwriter with his call for unity in these divided times.

Tomorrow songs 13-17....

Music City Monday Morning Shuffle - Half Acre of Rock Mix (Trust Fund Hobo Remix)

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

*Note: The video playlist at the bottom of the post attempts to closely approximate the shuffle I listened to on my way to work this morning. When a video for a song was not available, I substituted another song by the same artist. When I could not find any videos by an artist, I included a related video or did not include a video for that track. This blog may reference unreleased tracks, however, no unreleased music is ever included.

First of all, a huge thanks for making the 2019 WXNA Fall Pledge Drive a rousing success!  We met and exceeded our goal!

It is Thanksgiving Week.  I will be posting shuffles through Wednesday and then taking the rest of the week off for the holiday.

Let's get right into the shuffle.  I think this week will be pretty laid back, but as always great music...

On Monday we shuffle tracks from the Music City Monday Spotify Playlist...
