E2TG 5/25/2020 - Music City Monday - Hobo Bill Mix (Little Caney Remix)

We are back after an extended weekend.  I remain skeptical about the reopening, and I fear that many people are acting like the pandemic is over when it is not.

I am choosing to stay in most of the time, and frankly, it is less stressful for me to do so than to go out and worry about myself and others.  That is just for me. And to be honest, staying in IS beginning to wear on me - especially seeing so many people getting out.

I think what makes me angry is that the people who refuse to wear masks and practice social distancing (and this can be seen all over the country) make it more difficult for me to consider easing back out.  Not to mention how polarized this all has become.  I fear being out in a mask and being attacked by someone without a mask. I don't know if that is a reasonable fear, but I have heard about such things and so my fear is real even if it is unreasonable.

We are living in strange times, and it does not help to have a President who purposefully spreads misinformation and seems to relish in the division and chaos. So, I am restless and reluctant and fearful.  On the other hand, I do better than some at keeping to myself, and I am trying (not always with success) to stay connected via social media and the like.

Ah....Onward!

Continuing our review of our Featured Friday Playlist (songs 7-12)

7. "Life During Wartime" by Nichole Wagner
Austin, Texas singer-songwriter from the EP Dance Songs for the Apocalypse.  This is a really cool cover of the Talking Heads classic. The EP also includes covers of Sia, Rilo Kiley, Kate & Anna McGarrigle, and Neil Young.
8. "Sunrise" by The Mouse Outfit (feat. One Only)
New track from the Manchester Hip Hop collective that we featured extensively last year.
9. "Pray for Me, Pray for You" by Glass Cabin
New single from a new Nashville based duo project featuring Jess Brown and Dave Flint.
10. "One Day At a Time (Baby)" by Jake Stopar
Recent single by this Chicago based singer-songwriter. Stopar is the guitarist for the Chicago band The North and Wells Band.
11. "Runes" by BYSTS
Next, we have the latest single  (from a forthcoming new album) by the L.A. duo. Dark and loud and really awesome music.
12. "Not Me. Us" by Ethan Gold
And, we close today's recap with this single from the L.A. by way of S.F. singer-songwriter with his call for unity in these divided times.

Tomorrow songs 13-17....

    Featured Friday Playlist

Music City Monday Playlist

This expansive playlist has hours and hours of music - new music and older music. It is fun to do a shuffle and see what comes up. I love all the music on the playlist, so I am never disappointed.
"Little Caney" by Glossary (from The Better Angels of Our Nature)
I was very late to the game when I comes to Glossary.  When they were breaking out, I was not paying much attention to new music - dealing with other life stuff.  As is often the case, my initial introduction came through rather unexpected channels (via the Washington D.C. band The Grey A - led by a former member of Glossary), and then once I became familiar, their name was everywhere, I was a huge fan.  At the time, I was introduced, the band was on hiatus. They reunited a couple of years ago for a anniversary show. Joey Kneiser released a solo album a few years back and a movie he made was released within the last year or so.
"Never Play Guitar" by Lilly Hiatt (from Walking Proof)
Lilly Hiatt represents the best of what is happening now in East Nashville. Her album Trinity Lane was a breakout, and her latest, Walking Proof may just be a better album. I am not really in the loop when it comes to commercial success, and it is not something I really care to follow, but in my opinion, Hiatt deserves to be on par with Margo Price and Jason Isbell.
"Diamonds Back to Coal" by Jeremy Ivey (from The Dream and the Dreamer)
Speaking of Margo... I purposely didn't mention Lilly Hiatt's talented and famous father. It is, at this point, just a 'fun fact'.  I can say the same about Jeremy Ivey's famous spouse. Jeremy Ivey is a great songwrtiter, and yes, it is fun to see him perform with his wife, but it is just a bit of gravy. He has such a great presence and sense of humor. His live shows - whether full band affairs or solo gigs at Dee's on Madison Guild Monday - are always a pleasure. I cannot wait for the chance to see him again..
"She's Gonna Be the One" by Human Radio (from Samsara)
My initial introduction to Human Radio was on some signs taped to light poles during the brief time I lived in Memphis.  At first, I imagined it was about like a human beat box or something. I finally learned who Human Radio was and their self-titled album remains one of my all-time favorites.  The band eventually relocated to Nashville before disbanding.  Flash forward to circa 2015, and the band members were again all living in Nashville. I got to cover a reunion show - as part of a benefit - at Third and Lindsley. I also got to know a couple of the members. The reunited band made an all new album Samsara a couple of years ago.  I know at least one band member is no longer living in Nashville as of 2019.

"Hobo Bill's Last Ride" by Jason Ringenberg (from Stand Tall)
And we close with another fine track from Jason Ringenberg's (Don't call it a) comeback album - Stand Tall. Ringenberg never really went anywhere, but nonetheless, Stand Tall was a great album proving him to be a force apart from his huge role in Nashville rock and roll.
