Well, it's premier week at E2TG as I unveil my new "programming schedule".
Welcome to debut edition of Trending Tuesday! Why trending? Well, for one thing, it starts with the letter "T" which was a requirement in naming this day. Also, my social media consultants advise me that the term "trending" is er, um... trending these days.
So, what is "Trending Tuesday"? In some ways it is similar to Featured Friday. Basically, it is songs/artist that have been fresh on my mind (new - or fairly recent acquisitions/releases), like all "rules", I play fast and loose. The Trending Tuesday playlist is different than the Featured Friday playlist, but they have a lot of overlap. Well... enough exposition - here is the first Trending Tuesday Morning Shuffle....

Thursday Morning Music Shuffle - Almost Died Mix

Let's see... I attended the final show of the Jason Ringenberg residency at The 5 Spot. Jason's guests were Kristi Rose and Fats Kaplin. Fats Kaplin is a wonder, Kristi Rose sings like an angel, and Jason is Jason! The night included: Fats, Kristi, and Jason covering a Gun Club song. And even though, I didn't win the Farmer Jason eggs, Jason did play my request, "Don't Go Back to Rockville" - which I first heard him sing in November 1985 when he joined R.E.M. on the stage of Vanderbilt Memorial Gym. Plus I got an XL Farmer Jason t-shirt! I did have a brain-fart moment and told Jason that The Sluggers played a Gun Club song when they opened for the Scorchers at Cat's Record. His reaction told me I was mistaken, and after giving some thought and digging into brain cells I thought had been lost years ago, I remember that it was Flipper that they covered. Don't ask me why I mistook Gun Club for Flipper except they were both bands that I loved and who had achieved legendary status just a relatively few short years after they formed.
After that, a bunch of folks migrated over to The Family Wash for a J.J. Cale tribute night put together by Pete Finney. An amazing band backed an all-star cast of guests including: Jon Byrd, Kevin Gordon, Mac Gayden, Jonell Mosser, Dave Coleman, Bill Lloyd, Nikki G, Jack Pearson, Pat Bergeson, and Rick Schell. Plus a couple of songs by the awesome East Nashvill band Los Colognes.
A big crowd full of really awesome people at both events on the eastside.
Meanwhile, Darrin Bradbury was representing East Nashville,well, in the deep, deep south of Nashville (Franklin), where he did the recurring Vietti Chili promo and totally owned the moment. You can see it HERE. Darrin comes in at the 37 minute mark. Great news is that Darrin will be doing a full set a MCR in June! I will be on the bus for that!

Featured Friday Morning Music Shuffle - Just the Same as Dyin' Mix

"Being afraid of living is just the same as dying." This line from Two Cow Garage seems like one of the most important for me to remember today. More about Two Cow Garage and last night's other great music is few...
First, the next 2015 E2TG "Earie" Award:
The premise: "Kids these days." I write those words, but how did I mean it? Was it said with exasperation, as it has been said for generations? Well, in this case, that is not how it was meant. We live in a time of incredible possibilities - really! Just thinking about music (keep in mind, I know next to nothing about the recording, mixing, mastering etc. process), the potential for DIY recording, distribution etc. seems pretty amazing. But of course, availability of technology is just a part of the equation. It is when and where ripe and fertile minds meet this "new" technology that things start to get exciting. The driving force for me when it comes to music is the constant search for something new. E2TG has always been (in part) a balancing act between incredible new music being made all over the globe and maintaining a health appreciation and passion for the music that made the new music possible. It's about connections. Right? Yes! Some "kids" these days are using the tools of the day to make some really cool music, and sometimes, this exciting new music is forged by an appreciation of music way older than those who are making it.
About three years ago???? I was introduced (by Papa Tune's - of course) to a young band of brothers from Connecticut called The Foresters. At the time, I think only one of the brother was a teenager - the rest were pre-teens. I made a joke that their average age was 10 3/4 but that their amps go up to eleven. (or something like that). The Foresters were a pop punk band - formed after the three brothers, named Nork, attended a Green Day concert and asked for a received instruments. The early music was really good power, pop punk. Over the past couple of years, The Foresters have released a couple of EPs, recorded with and as several different side projects. The influences have expanded and diversified and the music has gotten more complex and better. The band's latest album, Sun Songs, finds the band reaching a new plateau - while the possibilities remain endless. A couple of years ago, the band were given the Hope For the Furure award by the Couch by Counchwest Music Festival. Well, the future is now, and The Foresters appear poised to find out what happens next - which at this moment is a 2015 "Earie". Actually, special mention for this award needs to go out to all of the artists on the band's homegrown record label, Dord Music Group.
Congratulations to The Foresters - you are the 2015 "Kid These Days..." Award winners.
Last night was a quintessiential Nashville live music night - with some great shows going on in different venues. Me, I hung out at The Five Spot. Early, was a show featuring Fats Kaplin, Kristie Rose, Paul Burch, and more. Later, I was introduced to my new favorite band. They are called Red Collar from Durham, NC. They are a high energy, punk influenced band. Austin Lucas - who I saw for the third time this year was as amazing as ever, and Two Cow Garage who I saw for the second time this year (and who barely made it due to mechanical issues) blew me away as they did the first time I saw them.
Tonight, I'm excited to see Jon Latham opening up for the legendary Malcolm Holcombe at The Basement (not East).
Now, we have a Featured Friday shuffle to close out the post-holiday work week.

Featured Friday Morning Music Shuffle - The Whole Thing in the Middle Mix

14 Years... I have read some really powerful things today about THAT day. What I remember is some sense of unity... if nothing else, for a moment or moments, many of us were united... if in nothing else, then in fear and confusion and uncertainty. In degrees and over time, that unity has mostly dissipated... into conspiracy theories and feelings about the events that followed about the need for security vs. the importance of freedom. I was at work, and getting my news in fits and starts on a slow internet connection and the radio.
What I remember... I was taking part in an drama workshop put on by the Parks Department. Of the course of the workshop, we learned acting techniques, but our main goal was to create an original production which would then perform. If I recall correctly, the second class was on September 11, 2001. The class was held as scheduled, though I remember thinking it might be cancelled, and we spent much of that class talking about what had happened. It was a pretty diverse group of people and there were a variety of different feelings being expressed, and of course, the day ended up greatly shaping the production we created. Our production included adaptions of Brecht's The Good Person of Szechwan and Beckett's Waiting for Godot - as well as some other elements - all subtly adapted to speak to the events of 9/11/2001.
I don't know what THE lesson of that day is supposed to be... maybe it's still too soon, or maybe there is not one lesson. For me, today at least, I am going to try to remember how fragile life can be and make the most of every moment and treat people with as much kindness as I can. I will probably fall short of that... I probably already have... but I am going to keep trying.

Wednesday Morning Music Shuffle - Later Than You Think Mix

You know the Nashville Conundrum I mentioned a couple of weeks ago? Well the is a addendum to that conundrum (or something like that).. that is... there are amazing things happening every single night of the week, and (especially if you work a day job), there are nights that you just have to stay in to recharge, refresh, and do some of your own work... Last night was one of those nights, and yes, I missed some amazing things happening around town, but I am glad that I stayed in, and I got something accomplished...
Case in point, I added a couple of things to my Soundcloud... bits and pieces from my novel-in-progress which you can check out... (there may be some NSFW language/themes, depending where or if you work...)

#CXCW15 rolls on... Day 3 brought tons more videos including some of E2TG's all-time favorites... Among the many great clips were some from old friends like Sci-Fi Romance, MAKAR, and Imperial Rooster. Plus an explosive clip from relatively new friends Two Mule Blues. Head to the couch and visit couchbycouchwest.com to get in on the fun. By the way, they are still accepting submissions so get to videoing and get it done!
