Wednesday Morning Music Shuffle - Call of the Wild Mix

Well.... we made it to mid-week. Last night was a blast. I walked down from work to the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum for the CD Release Show for the Dylan, Cash, and the Nashville Cats (the 2 CD Set accompanies the exhibit currently running). Bill Lloyd and the phenomenal Long Players served as the core band and were joined by an all-star lineup that included some of the players on the original recordings (like Al Kooper) as well as family members like John Carter Cash, Jamie Hartford, Britt Ronstadt. Charlie Daniels, Michael Nesmith (Monkees), Julie Christensen, Kathy Mattea, Radney Foster, Jason Ringenberg and many more made for a memorable event. A brief rain delay did not seem to chase to many people away.
After that show, I headed to the Hi Watt to catch Heathen Sons (who were really good) - they are competing in Music City Mayhem for a slot playing Live on the Green so check them out and give them a vote if you can. Benchmarks were next. Formerly known as Todd Farrell and the Dirty Birds, Benchmarks just recently released a new EP which we will be presenting soon. The band had not played together in a few months, but they really sounded good to me, and as always, the songs were excellent. Todd Farrell pulled double duty, joining headliners Two Cow Garage on guitar. It was the last night of a month long tour for the long running Ohio band, and they did not hold back - offering a full-frontal assault of their unique brand of rock and roll.

Tuesday Morning Music Shuffle - No, All! Mix

Back in the shuffle business after an absolutely incredible weekend at the 2nd Annual Safety Harbor SongFest. Expect more detailed and official reports once I have fully recovered, but for now, let me just say I had a blast at this well-organized, artistically uplifting event and enjoyed some gorgeous weather. Despite my peeling nose and flight delay coming home, I can strongly recommend fans and musicians alike check out this still relatively new festival.

"There's a splinter in your eye..." Todays shuffle has it all (or it has a bunch of it, or at least some of it....): Old and new friends of E2TG, heroes, legends! Crossing stylistic boundaries without any hesitation! Crossing decades of music like we have a freaking time machine! This is what we do at Ear to the Ground! Look, my viral infection is lingering, yesterday's 60 degree high is in free-fall, it is a sucky rainy day that is supposed to give way to all kinds of frozen junk which this Southern city is ill equipped to handle, and so I am just trying to maintain the kind of enthusiasm this eclectic and fine mix of music deserves. Sorry for any unnecessary hyperbole or manic-ness of the above introduction....

Friday Morning Music Shuffle - All for Show Mix

Note to myself: just because it is not 4 degrees, the 20s are still pretty cold.
I wonder if I am the only person who upon encountering an unpleasant odor while out walking, thinks that I need to push the "inside air" button...
Ah, ignore me. It Friday - the end of the first full week of work in what seems like forever.
We close out the week a shuffle that includes a couple of recent tunes mixed in with some songs that I have loved for a long time....

Monday Morning Music Shuffle - Boy They Can't Ignore Mix

Had a blast this past Saturday witnessing a reunion show by Nashville Rock legends Royal Court of China with special guest Warner E. Hodges on guitar. As an added bonus, the band was introduced by the cover model from their self-titled debut album (she was actually Japanese).
Onward and upward, we have another great collection of music this morning, and as usual, the accompanying Playlist includes the songs from the Mix or if the actual song was not available (or locatable) in video form, another song by the same artist.

Tuesday Morning Music Shuffle - Avant Guard Dogs Mix

It's festival announcement time. We'd love to hear from our Readers about which festival lineup you are most excited to see. I'll be honest for most of the major festivals, probably 90% of the lineup seems almost obligatory. By that, I don't necessarily mean it's bad music, just that there seems to be a core group of bands who you know are going to be at every major festival. So, we're most interested in any artists who you were surprised to see on a festival line-up.
Let's get to it: This morning, we had four songs in our pre-shuffle shuffle and four song in our Shuffle shuffle.
Pre-shuffle: we continue to dig on the Dog Without Warning album Go Girl. Today, we heard Pacific Time Zone which more of an alt-country feel to it then some of the other songs we've heard from the album. We also had another great song from the self-titled You and Me album. We heard a newish track from our good friend Galen Wade via Soundcloud, and the pre-shuffle closed out with another great track from The Lucky Jukebox Brigade - he heard Flip which the band performed for this year's CXCW.

Friday Morning Smart Playlist - 400th Post Mix

So... yeah, this is the 400th post since we switched over to Blogger.
Big thanks to Shelly Colvin for the invite to her CD release shindig. If you haven't already, go check out her brand spanking new album Up the Hickory Down the Pine.
And it's Friday and I'm unexpectedly off work today, so I did one of those random smart playlists on I-tunes selecting from my entire collection and here are the songs that came out.
Thank You for Sending Me An Angel is the opening track from Talking Heads second album and the first of three produced by Brian Eno, More Songs about Buildings and Food. Released in 1978, the album also included the band's of the Al Green/Mabon "Teenie" Hodges song, Take Me to the River.
The one and only Charlie "Yardbird" Parker is up next with Moose the Mooch/Lullaby of Birdland.
Moose the Mooch is was written by Parker, while Lullaby of Birdland was written about Parker and the legendary jazz club which which was named for him by George Shearing.
Nashville singer-songwriter Matthew Perryman Jones is part of the Ten out of Ten collective. Home appears on the 4th Volume of songs released under the Ten out of Tenn name.
We close out today's shuffle with the Stereo Groove bootleg of the Oasis hit song, Wonderwall.

Thursday Morning Music Shuffle - Downtown Mix

Wow! There is beauty in sadness and rising life in the midst of decline. It's a great big amazing world if you can see past all the b.s. clouding your vision. Life is hard but it's only life, and everything is temporary, everyone is temporary.
Exciting things happening here at Ear to the Ground, which I will be bringing to you soon. In the meantime, we have an excellent shuffle to start off this possibility filled day....
Bob Dylan is 71 years old and he's just released his 35th studio album, Tempest, his first since his 2009 Christmas in the Heart album, and it may be the best album he's made in a number of years. Tempest debuted at number 3 on the Billboard 200 Chart. Today, we have Long and Wasted Years.
And finally, we have some long awaited NEW MUSIC from Tom Tom Club. Chris and Tina and company are back with their ode to the music that made New York City great. Downtown Rockers from the EP of the same name-drops all of those great NYC bands from old CBGB days.

Florida trio Grounded have just released some new music in the form of a released called Sinlong Plethora. Josh, of fellow Featured Artist - And the Giraffe mastered this collection. Today we present, Fermentation a whisper to a scream type punk/metal ballad. I don't know if that description does the track justice, but it's a good song.

Next we have music from a Canadian duo called Vulture Kult. They've just released their second album called Don't Let Rock N' Roll Ruin Your Life and we have the lead off song from that album, Electric Medication a psychedelic sonic assault with some classic rock riffs - the band's tag line is Rock rebooted for the 21st Century. A bold statement, but the band seems to back it up. It reminds me a little bit of the best of The Cult without some of the hippy excesses of that band (I loved The Cult - so don't send hate mail). I believe Vulture Kult draws from the same musical stream as Ian Astbury's old band did and does their own thing with it.

Monday Morning Music Shuffle - Super Couple Mix
We had some bad storms roll through between 1:00 and 2:00a.m. which wouldn't be so bad if I didn't have to wake up at 4:30. Blah.... But, lack of sleep is part of the rock 'n' roll lifestyle right? Whatever...
Here we go... part of the fun of letting the magical mystery shuffle option pick my morning music playlist is when theme emerge out of the randomness of it all. Or perhaps, the theme is all in my head... does it matter?
Actually a couple of thematic things happened today, but the overarching them as expressed in the subtitle of today's post is Super Couples of Music....
