It is time for another Featured Friday Playlist here at E2TG.  Today's list is slightly shorted than last week, but it is jam packed with some great music from old friends and new favorites from Nashville and around the world.  We start with a brand new song from a long-time E2TG favorite. 

Featured Friday Playlist (song 1)

1. "Where Do I Belong" by Sara Syms

E2TG favorite Sara Syms will be releasing her new album the Darkest Night soon. Today, she releases the forth single from that album.  

The gospel influenced “Where Do I Belong”, asks an existential question in The Darkest Light’s journey. Syms shares, "The past few years have flipped humanity on its side, inviting us all to evaluate everything. Whether it’s where you live, what you’re doing for work, who your tribe is, or even what you are doing on this planet, it’s an insecurity and vulnerability humans share. We all want to be a part of something greater than ourselves. We all want to belong."

 I cannot wait for the album.  The songs released so far have exceded my already high expectations. 

Produced by Ari Teitel, and supported by members of Sweet Crude, Snarky Puppy, Cha Wa, The Dirty Dozen and Naughty Professor - the album reflects the diversity of today’s New Orleans sound, everything from jazz, soul, gospel, americana and blues to the contemporary, genre-blending work of Lucinda Williams and the ambient soundscapes of Daniel Lanois.

We move on into the home stretch of our Featured Friday Recap... songs number 25-30:

25. "La tête pleine" by Kaky 

French rapper Kaky just released the Room 404 EP.  This is the lead track.  We previously featured a single released ahead of the EP.  I really love the sound of this music. Great stuff. 

26. "Falling" by Jordy Benattar; Tyler Simmons

Next up, we have the breezy new single from Canadian actress and musician Jordy Benattar. Really nice. 

27. "Stay (It Will Get Better)" by Bonsche

Next up, we have a single from German EDM musician, producer, and audio engineer. The song is dedicated to the LGBQIA+ community.  

28. "Weather the Storm" by Kaleigh

Los Angeles based actress, model, and musician Kaleigh just released her debut full-length.  The theme here is coming of age. Cool tune. 

29. "Salami" by Pretty Happy

Next up, we have a recent single from this post-punk band based in Cork. I dig this a lot. 

30. "Talledega" by Ventruss

We close this segment with a recent single from this metalcore band based in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. You can almost smell the engines and burning tires.

Once again, I just wanted to put something in that middle part of the blog post title... it doesn't really mean anything. Kind of a frustrating week really - much time spent on things that didn't pan out... and I am really tired today, but both radio shows went well and I am falling into a good rhythm with the two shows. 

On we go... 

And, we've reached the end of this week's Playlist recap. As always, I saved some cool music for last...

29. "Here Comes Our Family" by Scott Robert Allen

First up today, we have the new solo album from Michigan based songwriter/singer Scott Robert Allen (Thunderbirds Are Now!, Red Shirt Brigade). It is his first new music following a decade long hiatus. 

30. "Goodbye Seems to Only Start Again" by Brian Bringelson

Next up, we have the new solo album from this California singer/songwriter (Anchor & Bear) who previously released solo music under the name Paul Starling. 

31. "For the Dead" by The Red Step

Next up, we have a track from the self-titled debut album by The Red Step - which features Tobias Nathaniel of The Black Heart Procession who is backed by some of Belgrade's best musicians. 

32. "Roll the Dice" by Feral Ghost

Last week, we had the new single from Feralman - now, we have a track from the British rock band Feral Ghost. Great stuff. 

33. "In Secure City" by Julez and the Rollerz

Next up, we have some new music from L.A. 21st Century garage band formerly known as Julez. 

34. "STEEZ LUIZ" by GUSPY 

And we close out this week's Playlist with the debut single from an artist from Santa Ana who combines surf rock, indie pop, and reggae. A great debut and a wonderful way to take us out of this week's playlist and to prepare for a new playlist hitting around midnight.

Thinking today of isms. Some seem objectively bad but are they all? I kind of think it depends.  I tend to see myself as an idealist, and I usually think it is a good thing. Idealism is NOT synonymous with naiveté. Being idealistic does not mean I see the world through rose-colored glasses, but just that I have a vision of how I think the world should be. My problem is that I often disappointed when I see the way the world is compared to how I want it to be. But, if my idealism drives me in my efforts to shape the world around me, then it is good. 

Realism  - I tend to think of in negative terms. I tend to see realists as lacking vision. They see the problems of the world and resign themselves to it. But, what if, instead of resignation - the realist instead has a clearer vision of the world and can better react to the situation at hand?

Cynicism - I think an idealist can also be a cynic. Especially, if we let our disappointment in the gap between what is and what we believe should be make us bitter. But, healthy cynicism can be a good thing.   

I also don't think these three are mutually exclusive. One can have idealism, realism, and cynicism. The issue is how you use it. I think the world needs all three working together to come up with solutions that are practical but which strive for an unattainable ideal - while being questioned by a discerning eye and mind. 

But ah- Fascism... do the true fascist of today seem themselves in that light? Some do - maybe, but most do not. Thinking about the creeping rise of fascism in the United States which has been marching hard in recent years. People can get caught up in their vision to the point that they only see it.  I do think it is possible for an idealist and a realist to become a fascist without knowing it. Which is why I think my idealism needs the voice of the realist and the cynic -whether an internal or external voice to keep it in check.  

Today we featured the Next 4 songs in this week's Featured Friday Playlist. Songs 13-16:

13. "Bury" by Christian Singles 

First up, we have the lead track from the first solo release by Rob I. Miller (Mall Walk, Blues Lawyer) - a Bay Area singer-songwriter. The album is called Maybe Another Time and is out now on Mt. St.. Mtn. records. I dig it. 

14. "Distraction" by Kevin Burnstein

Next up, we have the lead single from the new album by recent Nashville resident Kevin Burnstein. The album is called Attack Distract Divide, and it is out October 23. This first single - "Distraction" is out now, and it is - as the titles might suggest a song and an album for our time. The song reflects the divided nation at a time when unity was most needed, and the role of leaders and some media and their tactics of distract and divide. Powerful stuff. 

15. "Prana Light" by Laraaji

After some heavy truth telling, it is time for some beautiful piano music courtesy of New York City based musician, mystic, and laughter meditation practitioner Laraaji. His album is called Moom Piano - which is his companion to his previously released Sun Piano. Just a lovely piece of music.

16. "Alive Again" by So Are We 

And we close out this segment of music with a fantastic song by this duo from Norway. So We Are has been together five years, and they just released their debut full-length album Piece of the Puzzle. This is the lead track, and I was captivated by the vocals of 

Guro Vikingstad and the guitar work of Stian Haslie.

Made it through another weekend. Honestly, I am trying to keep my spirits up, but it is hard - when I am seeing our country rolling headlong into fascism and dictatorship, when a virus - which has been controlled in other parts of the world is raging out of control - due to a disinterested government and people.

And, when the most important things have been stripped away...

Music - as it does - sustains me, but even live music has been taken away - for now - but with no end to the now in sight.

The election seems so far away and the inauguration even further - and I have fear and uncertainty about the security of the election and whether the results will be accepted or not by the people currently in power...

Ah, but even without live music - there is a ton of music to keep me going...


Our recap of this week's Featured Friday Playlist continues.  We pick up at song #9 and continue through song number 15.

9. "Broke Down in the Fast Lane" by Red's Blues

We start this segment of music with the title track from the brand new album by Sacramento based blues band Red's Blues. We featured an instrumental track from this album last week.  Today, we have a song that showcases the powerhouse vocals of Beth Grigsby-Reid.

10. "Seventeen"  by elkyn

Another new release that we previewed last week... beech - the new EP from 22 year old UK singer-songwriter Joseph Donnelly who records as elkyn.  Wonderful stuff.

11. "The Soul Singer" by The Waterboys

Using my prerogative, to featured a brand new single from one of my all-time favorite bands. I have been a fan of Mike Scott and The Waterboys for over 35 years, and they have continued to make music while constantly exploring and expanding on the sound. I am really digging this new single. 

12. "Same Old, Same Old" by No Party for Cao Dong

Next up, we have a really cool new single from the Taiwanese rock band No Party for Cao Dong.  The band made a big splash touring the UK last year, and this new single hits hard. 

13. "Girl in the Mirror" by Abigail Fierce

Next up, we have a new track from a 19 year old singer-songwriter and actress from Los Angeles. This is a lovely song about negative self-image and not liking the person who confronts you in the mirror.  Abigail plays Wendy in the Hulu series Love, Victor.

14. "Heaven Sent Delinquent (Electric Single Mix)" by Shawna Virago

Next up, we have a new single from transgender pioneer solo artist Shawna Virago. Virago has been performing as an out trans artist since the early 90s. Musically, she is associated with both punk and anti-folk music. This is a powerful song about escaping from small-town prejudice.

15. "Ma jolie petite fille" by Michot's Melody Makers

We close this segment of music with a track from the new Cosmic Cajun music album from Michot's Melody Makers.  Michot is Louis Michot of the Lost Bayou Ramblers. The album was recorded live at the Saturn Bar in New Orleans' 9th Ward last December.
