E2TG 10/09/2020 - Featured Friday - No Sound Mix (Save the Day Remix)

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

Well, we have reached the end of a another week.  I am so ready for the weekend.  I am going to start a few hours early....

I will say before we dig into the brand new E2TG Featured Friday Playlist - VOTE! Make a plan.  Check with your State and local election officials. There is a definite and concerted effort in some locations to suppress voting.  Don't let them win.  Know your rights and exercise your rights.

One more thing, before I just jump into the music - at this point, the people I truly don't understand are the undecided voters - I understand them less than Trump voters. Trump voters are part of a cult, so their behavior is predictable and easily understandable if you understand how cults work.  But, the people who are on the fence - that I have a hard time understanding. To me the choice is stark and obvious.

Featured Friday Playlist (Songs 1 to 8)

"No Sound" by Amelia White (single)
E2TG and East Nashville favorite Amelia White has a new single. It premiered earlier this week at Queer Country.  The song is a powerful song written in reaction to the murder of George Floyd. In the tradition of great protest songs, "No Sound' is humanizing song. It is recognizing the familiar in the stranger. It helps us take the tragic events which have been dominating our screens - out of the context of something happening to an "them" and place these events squarely in the context of something that is happening to one of "us".
"Save the Day" by Andrew Adkins (single)
Another E2TG and East Nashville favorite also released a single today, and this song, too, is inspired by the state of things during these troubled times. I have been a fan of Andrew Adkins since I first him play. To me, his music is very hard to classify - which is something I love. He only occasionally wanders into something like roots music, and yet, he is very comfortable sharing bills with people who lean more in that direction. At his heart, he is a rocker who writes great songs, and I think it is the strength of his songwriting that allows him to move comfortably in many different circles of music. His new album, The Echoist is due out in a little over a month.
"Venom" by Year of October (from Wastelands)
I have been following and writing about Year of October for the majority of E2TG's existence.  I have been listening to their new album Wastelands for a while, and we have featured some of the pre-release singles. I have been saying that Wastelands represents another big step forward for this band. Speaking as someone who has always admired and appreciated what they do, it has been especially heartening to see how they have and continue to develop and grow as musicians, songwriters, and performers. Wastelands is out now, so you can judge for yourself.
"Forever, Worse, or Better" by Great Peacock (from Forever, Worse, or Better)
A viral marketing campaign this week touted that Great Peacock had been arrested for impersonating an Americana band. I had to laugh. My first exposure to the band - I believe - was on the old Couch by Couchwest virtual festival (a virtual festival before virtual festivals were the trend). I particularly remember a collaboration they did with Wess Floyd as the Great Daisycocks covering Alabama Shakes' "Hold On". That was over seven years ago. Anyway, they may not be an Americana band - truly they are a rock band through and through, but they have also been in Nashville long enough to have absorbed some roots touches here and there. Regardless of what you call them, their new album is out, and it is fantastic. We have the title track in this week's playlist.
"Lonely Heart of Mind" by Ned Hill (from By the Light of the Radio)
This one slipped past me last week. I have been aware of Ned Hill for several years - saw him with his band Ned Van Go.  Now, he is recording under his own name, and he has a new album that I am digging.  As someone to whom music is very, very important, I love songs and albums that reflect that love - with lyrical and musical references that take me back. And, today is Ned Hill's birthday! So, happy birthday!
"What's Good" by Anana Kaye (single)
If you know me, you know I love Lou Reed and you also know I love cover songs. Over the last few years, Anana and her husband Irakli have been blowing me away consistently. So, this song is a trifecta. A cover of one of my favorite Lou Reed songs which Anana very much makes her own.
"Mercy, Mercy Me (The Ecology)" by Devon Gilfillian (single)
I believe I read that Rolling Stone recently named Marvin Gaye's What's Going On - the number 1 greatest of all time. Released in 1971 during tumultuous times, the albums messages are sadly very much still relevant today. Nashville singer-songwriter Devon Gilfillian recently performed a tribute to the album as part of a get out the vote event, and he released this cover as a single that same day.  Absolutely stunning.
"Hands Down in Your Pockets" by Jeremy Ivey (single)
We end this segment of the Playlist with the latest single from Jeremy Ivey  - his album Waiting Out the Storm is out next Friday. I was a little late to discovering Jeremy Ivey's solo music, but since I did, I have been all in. He writes uncompromising lyrics with a deep sense of compassion.
