Well it is officially October now. October has historically been one of my favorite months - the height of Autumn which is probably my favorite season.
In reality, though, I think many of my feelings about the season are nostalgic in nature - remembering backyard football games, the chill in the air, the smells of burning leaves. I guess the chill is still a thing, but now when I smell burning - I have concerns about it, and I haven't playlist backyard football in years...
And yet, I still look forward to fall.
Today, we wrap up our recap of this week's Featured Friday Playlist and prepare for a whole new playlist tomorrow... As usual, we save some great music for last... Songs 19-21
19. "Quarantina" by ASM
ASM are back again this week - with another track from their Blue Cocoon album on Chinese Man Records. I dig this one a whole lot.
20. "Ideas (Mensa Deathsquad Remix)" by XL427
Next up, we have a track from Ohio based shoegaze/dream pop band XL427 featuring Andy Ingram who is also the head of Dayton based Poptek Records. This remix is handled by KC based darkwave band Mensa Deathsquad. A great collaboration.
21. "There Must've Been a Reason" by All Night Dining
We close out this Playlist with the debut single from Manchester band All Night Dining - who released Butterfly earlier this year. The single was delayed due to COVID-19 and like so many bands and artists we know - the virus slowed the momentum but did not slow the drive of this up and coming band.
"Disco-Nect [Robot 84 Remix] - Disco Rave Mix" by DJ Scratch and Sniff (from Disco-Nect single)
Brooklyn/Edinburgh duo DJ Scratch and Sniff create improvisational dance mixes that are firmly rooted in Disco. This is a 2019 single from them. Cool stuff.
"Hard Times" by Adam Carroll and Michael O'Connor (from Hard Times)
Next up, the title track to the 2009 collaborative album between Adam Carroll of Texas and Michael O'Connor of Colorado. Just fantastic songwriting and performance.
"Kill the Medicine Man" by Ron Gallo (from Heavy Meta)
Going back a few years, we have the New West debut album by Philadelphia native and Nashville based Ron Gallo. I remember seeing them live maybe shortly before this and being blown away by their energy.
"What is This Love?" by Shane Tutmarc (from Written & Produced by Shane Tutmarc)
I guess counts as a trifecta. This track is currently in our Featured Friday Playlist, I played it today on my WXNA show Greetings from Nashville, and then a short time later, it showed up on today's shuffle. I've already written about this track and the album earlier this week - so just check it out if you haven't.
"Long Road Home" by Davis Raines (from Turquoise and Silver)
I have said it before and I will say it again and again, Davis Raines ranks high in my (theoretical) listing of Nashville songwriters. He brings a unique and rich background, a poet's heart, and a penchant for truth-telling so important for songwriters. This, his latest release, is a fine addition to his impressive career.
"Dancer" by Bill Eberle (from Mix for a Movement)
This is a track from that compilation curated by the band Sad Baxter - which was released back in June. The proceeds from sales of the digital album went to Black Visions Collective. Eberle is closely connected to Sad Baxter - in fact, the first time I saw Eberle play live - he was backed by Sad Baxter.
"Rattle Them Winches" by The Kings Pond Shantymen (from Hold Your Course)
And we close with some modern shanties from the UK. This was a spring 2020 release. It is always a good time for a well done shanty.
