Featured Friday Morning Shuffle - Ride or Die Mix

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

Today, I would like to talk about the fund raising part of the Magnolia Roads American Roots Hoedown IV.  As I have mentioned, the show and the silent auction will benefit the Ben Eyestone Fund of the Music Health Alliance. Many of my Nashville readers know about Ben and this fund, but for those reading this who don't know, HERE is a link to some information about the fund.

I feel like this is becoming a pattern, but it has been another rough week, and I am so glad it is Friday. As I mentioned yesterday, I did add a bunch of new music to my playlist, and I did have to make some cuts to get down to 500 songs (which I have arbitrarily set as a limit for this playlist). Those songs removed are still on my phone, so they can show up on a future Wild Wednesday shuffle.

Anyway, let's get to it!

"Goodbye" by Marty Willson-Piper

First up, and just in time for a Record Store Day Eve post, we have Marty Willson-Piper with a track from his Hanging Out in Heaven album. Originally released in 2000, this fifth solo album by the former member of The Church will be released on vinyl tomorrow for Record Store Day. The release is limited to 1,000 copies, and it includes two bonus tracks not on the streaming and other versions of the album. We have recently been featuring music from the latest album by Noctorum - Willson Piper's project with Dare Mason.

"State of Mind" by From Carbon

Next up, we have our first listen and the first of two tracks today from Manchester band From Carbon, and their most recent album Existence. The band had a song featured in the movie Strangeways Here We Come. This album was released in late March with a limited number of physical copies.  10% of proceeds from the physical sales were donated to Musicians Against Homelessness.

"Song for Keith" by Peter Rogan

Next up, we have a lovely jazz-flavored instrumental from Still Tryin' to Believe - the debut album by singer, songwriter Peter Rogan.  This is the album that features collaborations with noted Nashville musicians and songwriters Will Kimbrough and Phil Madeira. This was a great song for a dreary morning commute. The song was a top 5 finalist in the 2017 Great American Song Contest's Instrumental division.

"(Never) Give Up the Fight" by From Carbon

Next up, we have our second track from Existence. These two tracks are my actual first listens, and I dig what I am hearing so far.  More to come.

"Mercury's Blues" by 6 String Drag

Another Record Store Day release in the shuffle today.  6 String Drag are releasing The Jag Sessions on vinyl for the first time - tomorrow. This release is limited to 500 copies - so happy hunting.  It is a wonderful album, and I loved this track.

"Stories That Rhyme" by Pete Berwick

It is great to see Pete Berwick's album, Island getting some well-deserved recognition. Even though I was late to the part of Berwick's music - which he has been making for years, I take some consolation in thinking I was maybe a bit a head of the curve on this latest release. It is a truly great album, and I expect it to be flying high on a lot of year-end lists (including my hypothetical one - since I don't really do year end lists, per se).

"Beautiful Honey" by Peter Rogan

Next up, track #2 of today from Still Tryin' to Believe. This time we have a tender love song. I am really enjoying this album.

"Strange" by Fox and Bones

For the second day in a row, we have a track from Better Land by Portland, Oregon based duo Fox and Bones. Glad I got a hold of this album, it is very good. Thanks to Adrian of Adrian+Meredith for helping to make sure I got a copy since I don't like to ask. :-)

"Time Machine" by I Ya Toyah

Chicago-based one-woman industrial electronic artist I Ya Toyah returns to the shuffle with another track from Code Blue. Really great heavy but (for me) accessible music. A great additions to my shuffle.

"Ride or Die" by Rat Fancy

We close with our first listen to Stay Cool by LA twee indie pop-punk band Rat Fancy which is set for release in June on Happy Happy Birthday to Me Records. It is their debut album, and it was produced by David Newton (The Mighty Lemon Drops). Rat Fancy was one of the bands I caught during my all too brief visit to Athens Pop Fest (R.I.P.) back in 2017.  More to come on this one.
