We have a great big Music City Monday shuffle. With all the insanity coming to Nashville this week, with the NFL Draft and the Marathon, it is important to remember that and why Nashville truly is Music City USA. There are those who want to obscure or dilute that fact, and in rebuttal, I offer up - this shuffle!
"When the World's Against Me" by Andrew Adkins
Andrew Adkins recordings have an epic quality to them - complex instrumentation and just plain wonderful songs. There is a reason, his music is frequently selected for movies and television. I love the horns on this track - and the way the song just soars"That's Your Teacher" by Tim Carroll
Next up, we have another from Tim Carroll's Keeping Time album. This - his most recent release - showcases the powerful newer songs in his impressive repertoire. This is one of my favorite of the newer songs, and it also one of the favorites of my friend Jan - who shot the live video featured in the video playlist below.
"Queen and King of Smaller Things" by Andrew Leahey and the Homestead
After beating around the bush, we have our first listen to Airwaves - the excellent new album from Andrew Leahey and the Homestead. We may feel powerless when it comes to the big picture of the world, but we are all kings and queens of the smaller things closest to us.
"The Sunken Lands" by Rosanne Cash
Next up, we have a track from The River and the Thread by Rosanne Cash. The album (her fourteenth studio album) was released on my birthday in 2014.
"Same Old Song" by Kris Kristofferson
Next up, we have the great Kris Kristofferson with a song he wrote that was first recorded by Ronnie Hawkins in 1972. This live in the studio version is from Live at RCA Studios 1972 - which was released in 2016.
"Woodstock" by Jim Hoke
Next up, we have a track from the latest album by one of Nashville's most talented and versatile musicians - Jim Hoke. Hoke is a true multi-instrumentalist. As leader of Aqua Velvet - he is a masterful and inventive arranger. Here he offers a reminder that he is also an incredible songwriter and performer. I got to hear most of this album live a few months back. The album is called The Floating Zone. It is a great Pop album in the best sense of that multi-faceted term.
"Fade Into You" by Brett Ryan Stewart
Another Music City Monday and another great cover from the talented singer-songwriter-musician-producer Brett Ryan Stewart. This is from his 2018 2nd volume of covers - called Hiding Under Covers. This is a cover of a 1994 song by Mazzy Star - that was also covered by J. Mascis of Dinosaur Jr. (in 2014).
"Get What She Wants" by Adrian + Meredith
Last week, I got to hear some songs from the forthcoming new album by E2TG favorites - Adrian + Meredith, and I can't wait for that album. While we wait, we have a track from their debut release 2016's More Than a Little. Raucous roots music - complete with clogging. Whether you are seeing them as a duo or as a large band (complete with the Nashville Horns), it is sure to be a great show. I have a long-running joke about calling them The Meredith Band (feat. Adrian), but truly this is a great musical and otherwise partnership that words really well.
"Battlefront" by Tomi Lunsford
What I love about Nashville is that the city is filled with amazing songwriters and musicians - some who have been here for decades and some who just arrived. As a music fan, it is inspiring to see the diversity of experiences, musical styles, and geographic influences that the new folks bring in, and at the same time - the historical perspectives (and diversity of experiences, musical styles, and geographic influences) that the "old-timers" provide. Tomi Lunsford is one of the best. And this is a great song from her 2016 album Come On Blue.
"Explanation" by Todd Snider
The latest release from Todd Snider is Cash Cabin Sessions Vol. 3 which came out this year. Recorded by the world famous Cash Cabin (by John Carter Cash). This is our first listen to that release, and it is - as the title suggests - just an explanation for a song on the album. Stick around, though, because we do have an actual song from that album coming up (not the song that was explained)."Call me or Don't" by Microwave Mountain
Next up, we have a track from one of the best "new" bands in Nashville - Microwave Mountain from their Sick Licks album. There is a certain poetic justice in Todd Snider and Microwave Mountain both coming up on our first shuffle after 4/20 - they both played big local shows on that date.
"Sleeper" by Idle Bloom
Next up, we have some heavy, distorted catch pop rock music from Idle Bloom from their 2017 album Little Deaths. The band formed in 2014 out of the remnants of the band Fancytramp.
"Framed" by Todd Snider
As promised, we close things out with Todd Snider from the Cash Cabin Sessions Vol. 3. A founding father of modern day East Nashville, and one of the most influential artists on contemporary Nashville (off-Music Row) music.
