A fun night at The 5 Spot for the opening night of Brian Wright and Friends April Residency. A killer band, great songs, and guest Shannon McNally.
Plus, I stuck around for most of $2 Tuesday with great hangs and more great music.
I'm dragging a bit today!
#E2TG Favorite among Favorites Darrin Bradbury just released a new single - his first release since signing to ANTI- Records. It's for his song, "Newark" which is one of my favorite of his newest batch of songs.
Now, it's time for our regularly schedule "Wild Wednesday" shuffle. I love Wednesdays because it is a bit like digging through old boxes - you never know what you will find.
"Tomahawk of Truth (Skull Full of Lies)" by Smokey the Firebear
We start things of with some experimental, instrumental music from Connecticut. We featured Smokey the Firebear quite a bit a few years ago. This was a track from the album Ohm Atlanta. The album is no longer available through his bandcamp page, but the video is still up on YouTube. Good to hear this music again.
"Crazy World" by SuperCrashingStar
Next up, we have the return of another old E2TG favorite. SuperCrashingStar from their Digital Lo-Fi release. When this album came out, the band was based in New York, but the band's primary member has since moved back to Paris (although he was back in the U.S. as of last month). Really love this music. Great to revisit it.
"Knoxville Girl" by The Louvin Brothers
Next up, we have a classic murder ballad (which you may have heard on Double Shot this past Saturday - played by my partner Sue). The song is derived from a 19th Century Irish ballad which was itself derived from a 17th Century English ballad - the roots of which involve the noted diarist Samuel Pepys. I recently heard the Louvin Brothers episode of the great podcast Cocaine and Rhinestones which delves into the stories behind the major and not so major players in 20th Century country music.
"West to Bismarck" by Jennifer Lyn and the Groove Revival
Next up, we have a track from Badlands by North Dakota based blues-rock band Jennifer Lyn and the Groove Revival. Powerhouse blues based rock. The album was released in early 2018 and we featured it back then.
"Lazarus" by David Bowie
Next up, we have the last single released during David Bowie's lifetime. A haunting song that foreshadowed his impending death. It appears that during the filming of the music video (in the playlist below), Bowie was informed by his doctor that his cancer was terminal.
"You're Dead" by Norma Tanega
Next up, we have a song from the great Norma Tanega. This is a song on her album Walkin' My Cat Named Dog - the title of which comes from her huge international hit single. This song received renewed attention when it was used in the 2014 New Zealand Zombie film What We Do in the Shadows.
"Daylight Savings Time" by Pilotcan
Next up, we have the only track in today's shuffle that is from our current "Featured Music" playlist. This is Scottish band Pilotcan from their recent album Bats Fly Out from Under the Bridge. I am loving these wonderful songs.
"Somewhere in Ohio" (Live) by The Jayhawks
Next up, we have The Jayhawks with a track from the 2015 Live at the Belly Up. The song was originally released on the band's sixth studio album, Smile - which was released in 2000.
"Miles and Miles of Texas" by Asleep at the Wheel
We close things out with a live recording of this song originally on the Austin based country music band's 1976 4th album Wheelin' and Dealin'. This recording was part of the archives of World Cafe - which were put of there a few years back.
