*Note: The video playlist at the bottom of the post attempts to closely approximate the shuffle I listened to on my way to work this morning. When a video for a song was not available, I substituted another song by the same artist. When I could not find any videos by an artist, I included a related video or did not include a video for that track. This blog may reference unreleased tracks, however, no unreleased music is ever included.
Last night was my fourth night in a row out. Two more to go until I take a break (for probably one night). Last night was a really great night. The music was top notch - as I expected it to be, but the best part were the incredibly creative and kind people I got to hang out with for a bit.
The night started at Tennessee Brew Works - where our friend George Trouble - in from Asheville - joined Bob Lewis and Megan Palmer. Great to see all of them and to hang with Collins de la Cour who does a great job booking the music there. Plus, saw Erin Nelson (drummer - Nelson, Zimmerman, and Quinn) and others and Kirsten Maxwell - a singer-songwriter who I saw perform on her first day in Nashville. A lot of good conversations about creativity and following your muse.
Next, I headed to The 5 Spot. More friends there. Arrived just in time to catch Jon Latham and his band (sans Andrew Leahey who had just flown in from Europe). It was there first time playing in several months, and they sounded fantastic.
Brian Wright and the Sneak-Ups were next (with Jon Latham joining in this powerhouse line-up). I think this is one of the coolest things going in Nashville or anywhere. Brian Wright's new album is being finished as I type this - it is going to be a game changer. Get on board, now!
David Newbould closed out the night in fine fashion. Newbould has a long and successful career behind him and I think ahead of him, too. I don't get to see if nearly as often as I like (my fault not his), but it was great to get a reminder of how good a songwriter and performer he is.
Let's end this week in fine fashion with a great shuffle of music!
"Worthy of the Sea" by Chuck Hawthorne
What better way to start a morning then with a wonderful song by Chuck Hawthorne from his brand new album Fire Out of Stone - delivered in that distinctive and rich voice of his.
"Look Homeward, Angel" by Cellista (Feat. DEM ONE and Melissa Wimbish)
Next up, a six minute plus song that blew me away with it's incredible blending of hip-hop and opera - backed by classical strings. Just check out the track in the video playlist, and then support Cellista if you dig it. Really, this was amazing. DEM ONE is a hip-hop artist (aka Demone Carter) and Melissa Wimbish is a soprano vocalist who sounds amazing here.
"Smile" by Josh Hyde
Next up, an uplifting track from Into the Soul. The album was produced by Joe V. McMahan - who also plays on the album. It is Hyde's second album. Now, smile! It's Friday!
"Finely Knitted" by Rat Fancy
Stay Cool is the debut album by California band Rat Fancy. This past week marked the second anniversary of my brief trip to the late and lamented Athen PopFest where I saw Rat Fancy play.
"Insane" by Luis Mojica
Luis Mojica is the second artist we have featured who was a member of Rasputina. You may recall, we have previously featured Losing Form by Polly Panic. Luis Mojica has recently gone solo. His debut album How a Stranger is Made is out now. This is our first listen, and I digging it.
"Who's Your God" by New Day Revolution
Next up, we have some hard rock/alternative metal from Detroit - via New Day Revolution. Getting me ready for some of the metal I will hear in a couple of weeks at Muddy Roots.
"Your Tummy" by Rusty Reid
Next, a short, to the point song from Rusty Reid from his album Head to Heart.
"Dangerous Runaway" by LUCKYANDLOVE
Next up, we have L.A, Synthwave band LuckyandLove from their album Transitions. Dangerous Runaway was released as a single ahead the album's release.
"Tough As Nails" by Chris and Adam Carroll
Adam Carroll takes lead vocals on this track from the brand new Good Farmer album. Digging the album - please check it out!
"Here in the Sequoias" by Jason Ringenberg
As we have mentioned, Nashville legend Jason Ringenberg wrote his new album Stand Tall while he was artist in residence at Sequoia National Forest. That time inspired one of Ringenberg's best albums ever. This track is a direct inspiration.
