Music City Monday Morning Shuffle - Gabba Gabba Hey! Mix

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

*Note: The video playlist at the bottom of the post attempts to closely approximate the shuffle I listened to on my way to work this morning. When a video for a song was not available, I substituted another song by the same artist. When I could not find any videos by an artist, I included a related video or did not include a video for that track. This blog may reference unreleased tracks, however, no unreleased music is ever included.

Well, my marathon week of live music is over, and although I was exhausted and as I predicted I rested up on Sunday, it was over all such an uplifting week - to spend time with people who inspire me.

Let's get straight into the Music City Monday shuffle!  We have some cool stuff!

Anne McCue and the Cubists at Grimey's

"It's a Foreign Thing" by Jen Starsinic

Jen Starsinic is going great work with Girls Write Nashville - a non-profit that pairs established musicians and songwriters with school age girls in a mentorship program that culminates in a recording and a live show of the songs created. Jen Starsinic is an amazing songwriter and singer in her own right. This is a track from her album The Flood and the Fire.

"Open Your Heart (And Let Me In)" by David Olney

Next up, we have a love song from David Olney's latest album This Side or the Other.  Anne McCue joins Olney on this track (and others on the album). The album is a virtual who's who of Nashville greats - including the McCrary Sisters, Steve Dawson, Fats Kaplin, and his regular band of Justin Amaral, Daniel Seymour, and Ward Stout.

"Sister of the Mainline" by Anne Mccue and The Cubists

Speaking of Anne McCue - my fellow WXNA DJ and friend is up next in the shuffle with one side of her latest single.  The picture above is from the single release show at Grimey's a few weeks back- The Cubists at that show (and I think on the recording???) are Megan Palmer, Jimmy Sullivan, and Pete Pulkrabek.  A superhero story about powerful women.  Anne McCue is a good reminder to me to try to make sure female musicians are proportionately represented. I know I sometimes fall short, and I need the gentle and no-so-gentle reminders from time to time. Habits ingrained by living ones who life in a male dominate world are hard to break and demand conscious effort.

"You Must Go" by Lilly Hiatt

Speaking of powerful women.... we have another side of a single release - this time it is a split single by Lilly Hiatt with her father who apparently plays music, too.  Ever hear of John Hiatt?  Lilly Hiatt has been on a role - her Trinity Lane album was a masterpiece, and it great to hear this new song from her.

"I'm Gonna Get My Baby" by Webb Wilder

Next up, we have Webb Wilder with a track from his most recent studio album - Mississippi Moderne. This is a Jimmy Reed cover.  Guests on the album include Patrick Sweany, The McCrary Sisters (again), and more. The band includes co-producer Joe V. McMahan and long-time Wilder sidemen Tom Comet and Jimmy Lester. Great Nashville drummer Jon Radford also appears.

"Face Value" by Tom House

Webb Wilder is one of the few active musicians in town who have been around longer than Tom House. I have written often about Tom House.  If "old Nashville" has a personification  - it has to be Tom House (and  that is not an age reference). Eccentric, supremely talented, and underappreciated (except by those who do appreciate him).  This is from that Inside These Walls album that we have been featuring for a while.  The album cover shows House standing at the backdoor to the legendary Nashville venue Springwater Supper Club.

"Payback" by Allen Thompson

Today is Allen Thompson's birthday, and the shuffle seemed know that because it brought up  Allen Thompson song in today's shuffle.  This is off of his Salvation in the Ground album.  Thompson is kicking all sorts of ass these days as part of the amazing Lady Couch.

"Good Things Will Come" by Runner of the Woods

Canadian Nick Beaudoing leads the Nashville band that mixes Cajun influences into their sound. This is a track from their album Thirsty Valley.

"God Bless the Ramones" by Jason Ringenberg

I have been featuring Stand Tall tall - the incredible new album from Nashville legend Jason Ringenberg out of both the Music City Monday playlist and my new music playlist. This is one of the stand-out tracks on the album.  The song chronicles the experience of Ringenberg's band Jason and the Scorchers opening for The Ramones in Texas in 1982.
