Before we get to our Featured Friday Playlist, we have a new non-Spotify single to feature - from E2TG favorite Mighty Joe Nolan. The Detroit native and long-time Nashville singer-songwriter, journalist, podcaster, and much more - just released his tribute to drive-in movies on Bandcamp - just in time for the relaunch of Bandcamp Fridday - where the platform waives their fees.
Here is some more about this new single: "Back to the Drive-In" is the second single off Mighty Joe Nolan's upcoming plague-times song cycle, American Guillotine. "Back to the Drive-In" celebrates the unexpected revival of "movies in cars" with this rock 'n' roll tribute to B movies and American summertime culture.
"I went to my first drive-in movie when I was a little kid in Detroit. We saw Peter Pan and Escape from Witch Mountain. But when you're a kid the drive-in isn't just about movies. It's also about the swingsets and see-saws, the concession stand - we even had a fireworks show during the intermission of the double feature. Drive-ins coming back during the pandemic was a weird and hopeful thing during a miserable time. The song is a tribute to monster movies and sci-fi films, but it's also filled with lots of visceral memories from my earliest experiences of 'movies in cars.'"
The song's stripped-down sound - like all of the tracks on American Guillotine - reflects the album's isolated production during various levels of social distancing. The single's spare arrangement shouts out vintage hip hop as well as 1950s rock 'n' roll, and Nolan's singular gift for lyric writing brings the cinematic setting flickering to life:
Also out today on Bandcamp, a new album from bassist Cameron Carrus who recently moved from Nashville to Brooklyn. Odd is a collection of instrumentals with some special guests like Adam Kurtz, Julia Blair, and Rich Ruth. Check it out below:
Featured Friday Playlist
1. "Busted World" by Darrin Bradbury
The latest single from Darrin's forthcoming Artvertisement album - his second on ANTI- Records. With each release, Darrin further solidifies the assessment I first made nearly eight years ago when he first moved to Nashville. He is one of the best pure songwriters of our time. I maybe have to explain "pure". By that I mean, he keeps the songs relatively and deceptively simple. His recent singles are all fairly short in length - which has become his trademark recently - get to the point, say what needs to be said, and get out. I remember an early song that never got recorded - as far as I know - where he had to explain that he wasn't a comedian. He can make you laugh sometimes for sure, but while you are laughing - he can then stick a fiery poker in your heart with a devastatingly perfect line. On Artvertisement, Bradbury combines these incredible songs with the powerhouse backing of Ryan Sobb and the Dead Mall, who are - if you don't already know - the hottest Nashville band around.
2. "Golden Child" by Mercy Bell
Singer-songwriter Mercy Bell just released her new album, and we have the title track for you today.
3. "Don't Call Me Darlin'" by Bee Taylor
E2TG Bee Taylor - recently unveiled a new short film called Gas Station Takeover and she just recently released the soundtrack. We were fortunate enough to have Bee and her band at an E2TG presents show a couple of years back.
4. "What You Don't Know" by Victims of the New Math
Next up, we have the most recent single from this Phoenix based one-man band featuring Thomas Young.
5. "The Dreamers of the World" by Don Gallardo
Another track from the new Don Gallardo album - All the Pretty Things. Gallardo keeps writing great songs that sound like songs you have known and loved forever.
6. "Altar" by Telepathic Teddy Bear
Telepathic Teddy Bear is a Mexican musician who we have been featuring for many years here on E2TG. I don't know much about him except that I love everything he puts out.
7. "If You Need Me" by Ben Arthur
E2TG favorite Ben Arthur - keeps kicking the Spotify algorithm's butt by releasing great new single. He is also kicking butt with his Song/Writer podcast. Recent episodes have featured Mary Gauthier and Amanda Shires just to name a couple.
8. "He Caught the Katy" by Kate Taylor
Why Wait! The new album from James Taylor's "Kid Sister" Kate is out now. Like her debut over 50 years earlier - the album was produced by the great Peter Asher. Taylor has a full-band release show scheduled for City Winery on Monday and Peter Asher is expected to make a cameo appearance. This is a cover of a Taj Mahal song that I have heard by friend Mark Robinson cover many times.
9. "Two Phones" by Ryan Sobb and the Dead Mall
Had to get in another track from Carnival Shapes - from the aforementioned (see the Darrin Bradbury track) Ryan Sobb and the Dead Mall. If you get the chance to see them live - do it. You will not be disappointed.
10. "Cold Steel Crow" by The Blind Owl Band
We first featured this upstate New York band back in 2013. They have a new album called Stimulus Package. A great reintroduction to this band for me.
11. "Peeno" by The Danbury Lie
From the wine inspired Lie Jazz Duo 3-song single - we have the latest music from E2TG favorite - The Danbury Lie. You can choose if it's "Peeno" Grigio or "Peeno" Noir.
12. "Waiting on the Aliens" by EG Vines
And we close out this first segment of our Featured Friday recap with another new single from Nashville singer-songwriter EG Vines. Vines will be performing next weekend at the Tomato Art Fest in East Nashville. I will be there with WXNA.
