Featured Friday Morning Shuffle - Violent Fog Mix

All of this happened a long time ago when the world was a very different place. Of course, none of us knew that at the time.

Tomorrow night is one of those crazy Nashville night's for music. Crazy good that is... Starting with the Mark Robinson Band at The 5 Spot at 6pm.  It's Mark's birthday so you know it's going to be fun one.  Later, George Terry McDonald (aka George Trouble) and Megan Palmer will be playing at Radio Cafe.  This is one you do not want to miss. The action shifts to The Basement East for a cool tribute show to Drive-by Truckers which benefits Nuçi’s Space.  Jon Latham and his band will be the house band covering Decoration Day while The Big Dumb will be the house band for the "greatest hits" part of the show.  The special guests are really pretty special.  Whew! I'm tired already.

Whew!  This week has been rather brutal for me. But it is Friday.  On Friday, we have the Featured Friday shuffle which is a shuffle of our "New Music" playlist which consists mainly of music submitted to E2TG is various ways relatively recently.

Let's just right to it...

"Fish Can't Fly" by Bob Rea

We start things off on this Friday with another track from Southbound - the outstanding recent album by Bob Rea.  Rea released his first album in 2003.  He divides his time between Nashville and his homestate Colorado.

"Countree" by Dave Hogan

As regular E2TG know, there are several Connecticut-based artists/bands that we follow closely. Jason Krug was a 2016 Artist of the Year, The Foresters were a 2017 Band of the Year, Grimm Generation, Lys Guillorn, all the Dord Music Group related bands, and more that are escaping my mind right now.  Dave Hogan was actually the first Connecticut artist that I met in person.  A few years back he made a trip to Nashville for a songwriting festival. Hogan has been a part of The Grimm Generation - along with the aforementioned Jason Krug, and it was Krug who alerted me to Hogan's impending visit. Dave Hogan also has a radio show on WPKN.  I also just saw that he is playing a show at Cafe Nine in New Haven with Nashville's own Kevin Gordon.  All my Connecticut friends reading this - need to get on that.  This is a song from Hogan's latest album Third Life.

"Televise My Eyes" by The Scrags

From a couple of U.S. singer-songwriter, we do a hard turn toward Stockholm, Sweden with a track from Anything - the latest album by The Scrags.  Their music would have fit in well among the best punk, post-punk, and new wave bands of the 1980s, but it does not sound specifically like any of the great bands of that era. I think this may be our second listen, and the more I hear, the more I love.

"Bob Dylan at the Opry" by Tom House

This is actually the final track we have to feature from Tom House's latest album, Strange, I Reckon.  Tom House is one of the most unique and best songwriters in a town known for its songwriters.  Strange, I Reckon is the best album of 2018 that you may not have heard but definitely should hear.

"Beep" by Pylon Reenactment Society

I regret that I never got to see Pylon.  The legendary Athens, Georia band toured with R.E.M. during their brief second run (1989-1991) as part of the Green tour, but when I saw R.E.M. on that tour, The Indigo Girls opened. Pylon Reenactment Society is not Pylon - nor do they intend to be. They are, as the name implies, a band that formed to celebrate the music of Pylon and to bring that music to a new generation.  Led by Pylon vocalist Vanessa Briscoe Hay, PRS puts on a high-energy, fun show that truly is a celebration. Their show in Nashville had an audience filled with music lovers - some of whom likely did see Pylon is their initial run and some of whom likely weren't even born during their initial run.  "Beep" was originally on Pylon's second album, Chomp.  Pylon Reenactment Society included it on their debut Part Time Punk Sessions.

"Extra Cold" by Chris J. Connolly

Thanks to human error - on my part - it took me a little time to get Chris J. Connolly's album Moving Maps into the "New Music" shuffle. Once I did, though, it has become a favorite of mine.  Connolly is a wonderful songwriter with a great voice.

"Are You Happy Now?" by Beth McKee

I have to send out a big thank you to Susan and Tim Lee for connecting me with Beth McKee. Her new album Dreamwood Acres is high on my list of favorite albums of 2018 so far. More than that, though, I am grateful to get to know her and the amazing work she does with the Swamp Sistas.

"Message to the DSN" by si,irene

And, we head over to Japan for our last song of the day and the week, because why not?  si, irene say that they are a band that asks the big questions. This is a track from their release called BEES. I am a fan of their music. I could not find a video for this track but if you'd like to hear it, here it is.
