All of this happened a long time ago when the world was a very different place. Of course, none of us knew that at the time.

Well, it's time for another Music City Monday playlist. We have another good one today, so let's get to it!
"Circe" by Tom House
First up, we have a track from Tom House's Inside These Walls album. Tom House keeps showing up in my shuffles, and I am glad. He is one of my favorite songwriters. He is a long-time part of the Nashville music community. I love hearing and reading his stories about playing Springwater Supper Club to a handful of people - among the handful Steve Young and Townes Van Zandt."Big Train" by The Cactus Brothers
Since I started this new configuration of Music City Monday, it seems like Walk the West and their spin-off band The Cactus Brothers have shown up almost every week. Since that time, I have found out that the surviving members of the band are reuniting this October to play a show with The White Animals at Exit/In. This is the song from the self-titled Cactus Brothers album. The song was written by the late Paul Kirby and Gary Scruggs - who is the father of Chris Scruggs. Joe Blanton (Royal Court of China, The Enemy, The Bluefields) will be filling in for the late Paul Kirby at the October show.
"Dirt" by Warner E. Hodges
Speaking of The Bluefields and speaking of Nashville artists who I have been following for over 30 years.... we next have a track from the most recent solo album of guitar-great Warner E. Hodges. The album is called Right Back Where I Started. Hodges - the son of noted country music musicians - is best known as the guitarist for the seminal Nashville band - Jason and the Scorchers. He currently still plays for the Scorchers and also plays with Dan Baird and Homemade Sin and The Bluefields when they get together. He has previously played guitar in Drivin' N Cryin'. I have been fortunate enough to see him in all those line-ups and leading his own band.
"Little Devil" by Derek Hoke
Next up, we have a track from the latest album by Derek Hoke - Bring the Flood. Besides being an incredible songwriter and performer, Hoke is the host of the long-running weekly show $2 Tuesday at The 5 Spot in East Nashville. Somehow, he manages to consistently book incredible local and touring bands weekly and play incredible sets of his own with some of the best musicians around. Check out the video playlist below - for a video of this song directed by Joshua Black Wilkins."Daddy's Grave" by Raelyn Nelson Band
I first saw Raelyn Nelson Band playing an early afternoon showcase at 3rd and Lindsley - a little over three years ago. Nelson - who happens to be the granddaughter of Willie - leads a rocking band that includes long-time Nashville musician Jonathan Bright. This is a 2016 single by the band. Most recently, I saw them at The 5 Spot - with Warner Hodges and his band on the same bill - quite a night of music.
"The Sea" by Tom Mason
More Tom Mason and his The Blue Buccaneer album. Surprising enough from a pirate album, he is singing about "The Sea". Seriously though, whether you are a fan of pirate music or not, you owe it yourself to check out the catalog of Mr. Mason and his crew - up to and including his most recent album of children's music (pirate songs without killing or rum) called If You Want to Be a Pirate: Songs for Young Buccaneers. We will be featuring that album very soon!
"Under Canvas" by Paul Burch
Next up, from the visionary 2016 album, Meridian Rising, we have a brief interlude - featuring a carnival barker. The album is an imagined biography of the late, great songwriter Jimmy Rodgers ("The Singing Brakeman") who was born in Meridian, Mississippi in 1897.
"Say What You Will" by Joe Fletcher and the Wrong Reasons
Most recently, Joe Fletcher has been making music as part of the band Hotel Ten Eyes. This track goes back to his 2010 album, White Lighter which he made with his band, The Wrong Reasons. Aaron Lee Tasjan's song, "The Trouble with Drinking" name checks Fletcher:
"I ain't one for singing All them drinking songs I'd rather leave it to ol' Joe Fletcher And keep on keeping on..."
"Only a Player" by Tim Carroll
Like, Derek Hoke - Tim Carroll hosts a weekly show at The 5 Spot. Tim Carroll's Rock and Roll Happy Hour has been an East Nashville staple for several years. Tim Carroll backed by a rotating but always amazing backing band - plays original rock and roll music every Friday for two to two and a half hours. Carroll has a huge (and growing) catalog of original songs - so it is never the same show twice. He recently released a new album featuring some of his latest compositions. That album Keeping Time is worthy of your attention.
"Kubla Khan" by David Olney
The first time I saw David Olney recite Samuel Taylor Coleridge's poem (completed in 1797 and published in 1816), I was blown away. To be honest, it still blows me away. He sometimes embeds it into one of his songs "Deeper Well" for example. This recitation is from the live album Live at Norm's River Road House. Be sure to check out the video playlist to hear Olney reciting this poem for an assembly of Cove Dog Nation canines.
