Sometimes, it is nice just to hang out with friends and just half listen to some really cool music while catching up with people (on the back porch not talking over the bands). $2 Tuesdays is my favorite time to do that. Heard Jennifer Nicely who was awesome, and a band from Dallas called Dead Flowers who covered The Replacements "Bastards of Young" and "Takin' a Ride" and whose original songs sounded as if they could fit on a Replacements record. There was other cool music, but like I said, I was needing to catch up with people.
As I have previously announced, my radio show with Sue Havlish debuts on Saturday, and thanks to Sue, there is now a Facebook event for the debut. We hope you will tune in.
We have reached the mid point of the work week... as we do every Wednesday, we shuffle songs from the Wild Wednesday playlist which basically includes things that do or do not fit the other playlists. Wildness to follow!
"Pool Hall Song" by Lowell Levinger (Banana From The Youngbloods)
The Youngbloods are best remembered for their hit song, "Get Together." Lowell Levinger who is also known as Banana released an album last year of songs by the band, called Get Together - Banana Recalls Youngbloods Classics. Lowell Levinger played The 5 Spot last month as part of R.B. Morris' residency, and he was really wonderful. "Pool Hall Song" was written by Jesse Colin Young.
"ugggy's hipster demiurge x" by Valued Customer
So word has it, Hugecup, the long awaited new album from Valued Customer is set to drop in July. In the meantime, Ugggy from the band just released a mixtape called Legends of the SmoKe which we will be spinning soon. In the meantime, today we have a track from byugecup (the hugecup b-sides) which showcases much of what I dig about this band. The video playlist features a track from their previous album, Kalpa (which I also loved). If you want to hear, this track, you can do so below.
"Piece of My Heart" by Big Brother and The Holding Company
The classic song first recorded by Erma Franklin (the older sister of Aretha) and best known from this cover by San Francisco band, Big Brother and The Holding Company featuring Janis Joplin on vocals.
"Swan Conformity" by Batkhi Dahn
Throwing it all the way back to 2015 with a song off of the now classic Plays 15 album... The video is one we've posted before for the song, "Yip" which stars Hayden and was filmed by Evan both of The Foresters. If you want to hear, "Swan Conformity", you can do so below.
"Goin' Up the Country" by Canned Heat
Another classic - from 1968 - by Canned Heat - this song is based upon a 1920s blues song called, "Bull Doze Blues".
"All Our Songs" by Built to Spill
Next up, the lead track from the 2015 album by Built to Spill. Love this tune.
"Gay in Texas" by Fat Opie
From the 2012 album Victoryville, I love this song. Fat Opie is San Francisco band lead by Scott Mickelson.
"The Great Twenty-Eight" by Jason Wilber
Jason Wilber is best known as John Prine's guitar player. He played the final night of R.B. Morris' May residency at The 5 Spot (which I sadly I had to miss). This song is from the 2000 album Behind the Midway.
"The Boy with the Thorn In His Side" by Jeff Buckley
And we close out with Jeff Buckley covering The Smiths from the recently released compilation, You and Me. The original was on The Smih's album, The Queen is Dead...
