Trending Thursday Morning Shuffle - Buzzing Phase Mix

My novel, The Drift is out now!  Paperback or Kindle (Buy the paperback and get a Kindle version for just $.99)

E2TG 7th Anniversary Residency is coming in June to The 5 Spot! The first night is just ONE WEEK away.  Come early for Clark Paterson, Rayvon Pettis, and The Big Dumb.

As you may be aware, for the past two years, I have been fortunate enough to co-host a radio show (Double Shot with Joe and Sue) along with my good friend Sue Havlish on WXNA-LP Nashville. This experience has been one of the most wonderful of my life.

WXNA went on the air just under two years ago. It is a low-power, all-volunteer community, non-profit radio station, and it has taken this city by storm. I am so proud to be a part of it. It is time for the Spring Pledge Drive.  WXNA is People Powered Radio and relies on the generous support of the community to keep things going.  You investment (small or large) pays off everyday - by helping the station to keep on providing a home for independently programmed shows covering a variety of musical genres and topics of interest and benefit to the community.  The drive runs through Saturday at midnight. You can donate at wxnafm.org or by calling 615-933-WXNA (9962).

Also, WXNA is throwing a huge birthday bash Sunday at The Basement on 8th Avenue from 3-6pm.  I don't know many details yet, but I will share them when I do. Nevertheless, I hope folks in Nashville will come out - this is a celebration of what YOU have helped to make happen.

Meanwhile, the week moves on and believe it or not, this is the last day of the month of May!

We have a relatively short shuffle - only 5 songs all from the NEW MUSIC playlist. Let's do it!

Well, I'm back after a long weekend. I am actually working from home today so my shuffle was not during my commute as usual but I did have a shuffle and it was a good one.

We missed Music City Monday, but we do have a few Nashville artists in the shuffle:

E2TG 7th Anniversary Residency is coming in June to The 5 Spot!

One of my hopes in releasing The Drift into the world was to free up my head-space to write some new things.  Last night, I wrote about 1,800 words on what may end up being the follow-up book.  It's an old idea, but for a lot of reasons, I've decided to just start it from scratch.  I'm excited. Very different from The Drift.

Looking forward to a long weekend.

But first, we have a Featured Friday Shuffle - that includes a couple of first listens.  Let's do it - shall we?

E2TG 7th Anniversary Residency is coming in June to The 5 Spot!

Week 1:  Clark Paterson, The Big Dumb, Rayvon Pettis
Week 2: The End Men, Ted Drozdowski's Psychedelic Circus, Ben de la Cour
Week 3:  Brian Milligram, Microwave Mountain, The Coal Men
Week 4: Joanna Barbera, Bee Taylor, Eli Cook

Last night, I caught the Bruce Springsteen tribute at The Basement East. A suburb band performed Born in the USA and a ton of other songs.  Singers included Charles Esten (Nashville, Whose Line is It Anyway?), Smooth Hound Smith, J. Marco, Andrew Leheay, Bill Eberle, and many more).  Jon Latham closed the show and as per usual brought down the house.  Fun show!

Tonight is night three of the Darrin Bradbury, Jon Latham, and Nick Nace residency at The 5 Spot.  The first two weeks were awesome, and I expect nothing less than awesome tonight.  It's an early show so you have plenty of time to catch other shows after or get home if you need to call it a night early.

It is Wednesday - and that is the day when we shuffle through all the songs on my phone memory. Anything can happen and usually does... let's go!

Trending Tuesday Morning Shuffle - Southbound Ghosts Mix

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

As I mentioned yesterday, my debut novel, The Drift is available via Amazon.

For those who read on Kindle, it is now available in that format!  If you buy the physical copy of the book, you can get the Kindle version for just $0.99.

I'm happy to say after one day on sale, The Drift is already the best-selling novel of my career! Did I mention it's my debut novel. ;-)   But seriously, thanks everyone who has expressed interest and/or bought it. It means a lot.

While I am in a promoting mood, I want to remind you that E2TG will take over The 5 Spot in East Nashville every Thursday in June from 6-8:30.  Tons of great music and fun.   Details below:

Week 1:  Clark Paterson, The Big Dumb, Rayvon Pettis
Week 2: The End Men, Ted Drozdowski's Psychedelic Circus, Ben de la Cour
Week 3:  Brian Milligram, Microwave Mountain, The Coal Men
Week 4: Joanna Barbera, Bee Taylor, Eli Cook

Onward.... It's time for another Trending Tuesday shuffle on E2TG...  I added a ton of new music to the New Music playlist since Friday.  That playlist is up over 650 songs.  Truth is, I am adding music faster than I can feature it. I know I need to do a clean up and move some older "new" songs out, but I have trouble doing that for some reason.

In any event, we have some cool tunes to get to - so let's not dawdle.

Week 2: The End Men, Ted Drozdowski's Psychedelic Circus, Ben de la Cour

Week 4: Joanna Barbera, Bee Taylor, Eli Cook

We are just over two weeks away from the E2TG 7th Anniversary Residency at The 5 Spot.  Rayvon Pettis, The Big Dumb, and Clark Paterson will be lighting up the stage.

Consider this a soft release announcement, but my debut novel The Drift is now available from Amazon.  If you are in Nashville and would like a copy, let me know, and we can make some arrangements. Full announcement coming soon.  (They said 3-5 days until it was available, so I wasn't expecting it today!)

Needless to say, I have a lot going on right now, and as is my nature, I'm feeling wholly out of sorts about everything.

Nothing like music to calm my savage beast of a monkey mind - and it is Monday - so we have another fabulous Music City Monday for your enjoyment.

Trending Thursday Morning Shuffle - Dog Man Don't Mix

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

Last night was Week 2 of the Bradbury, Latham, Nace residency at The 5 Spot.  Jon and Darrin did solo sets, and Nick Nace did a full band set. Highlights for me were Jon doing the original version of "Major Key" which I had never heard - it was incredible. Darrin doing "Junkie Love" which I had not heard in a while - which included a cute, if reluctant sing-a-long.  Darrin is promising awesomeness next week - so make your plans to attend Next Wednesday night at 6pm at The 5 Spot.

(I  need to update the poster)

Ben de la Cour opened the show - he sang a new song - which was fabulous.  I am thrilled to announce that after some intense and brutal negotiations, Ben will be the special guest opener of Week 2 of the E2TG  Residency in June (June 14).   Here is the rundown in case you've missed it:

Week 1:  Clark Paterson, The Big Dumb, Rayvon Pettis
Week 2: The End Men, Ted Drozdowski's Psychedelic Circus, Ben de la Cour
Week 3:  Brian Milligram, Microwave Mountain, The Coal Men
Week 4: Joanna Barbera, Bee Taylor, Eli Cook

I am stoked about this line-up and I hope you will make plans to attend some or all of these shows. I think it represents a great cross-section of the music that has made E2TG what it is, and I am honored that these talented folks are willing to perform.

Well - it is Thursday, and that means we dig back into our New Music playlist for "Trending Thursday" - let's shuffle!

Wild Wednesday Morning Shuffle - Zombie Walk Mix

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

Generally speaking, my knowledge of Nashville's music communities began with the rock scene in the 1980s - Jason and the Scorchers, Walk the West, The Questionnaires, Raging Fire, The Movement, In Pursuit, Bill Lloyd, Webb Wilder, Shadow 15, Royal Court of China and others.  I was aware of Waylon, Willie, and Kris and their music, but I did not know the story of their early days in Nashville.  A couple of years ago, for my birthday, my friends Pat and Kelsey bought me two books. One was "Outlaw: Waylon, Willie, Kris and the Renegades of Nashville" by Michael Streissguth. It is a great book and very informative about how this songwriters defied the conventions of the country music establishment and made it work. I was a fascinating peek into a moment of Nashville music history, and I was also able to draw parallels to the East Nashville songwriting community today.

Last night, in East Nashville, I had the joy of seeing Kris Kristofferson perform - at The Basement East  (Night 2 of his sold out 3 night stand).  Backed by Merle Haggard's band The Strangers (with Ben and Noel Haggard performing some of their late father's music). The band sounded great and the younger Haggards are talented and engaging.  Kristofferson is 83 years old. The joy he showed performing was palpable. His songs were as powerful as ever. "Sunday Morning Coming Down", "Me and Bobby McGee", "The Pilgram" - it was incredible hearing this songs live done by the man who wrote them. Being so close to the stage, and the realization of the history and the stories...

Moving into Year 8 of E2TG - we have our usual "Wild Wednesday" shuffle- where you never know what you might hear... Off we go!

Trending Tuesday Morning Shuffle - Lucky 7 Mix

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

On May 15, 2011 - because I didn't have anything better to do - I started a music blog which I called Ear to the Ground. I'm not exactly sure why I did it.  In the years prior, I had begun to share music (including my morning playlist) on Facebook and Twitter, and some people encouraged me to do something more with these posts. I started the blog on a site called Posterous - which later got bought out by Twitter and eventually got killed. So that first post is gone into the ether.  It wasn't all that substantive anyway. Fast forward 7 years, and much in my life has changed. I didn't have much of a plan when I started E2TG (which I would eventually decide to call Ear to the Ground for short), but I can assure you I never dreamed I would still be doing this in the far off year of 2018 nor that I would have met the amazing people I have met and had the incredible opportunities I have been given.

Next month will be the official celebration of 7 years (every Thursday in June) at The 5 Spot, but I didn't want to let this day pass without acknowledging the anniversary.

Week 1:  Clark Paterson, The Big Dumb, Rayvon Pettis
Week 2: The End Men, Ted Drozdowski's Psychedelic Circus, plus guest opener TBA
Week 3:  Brian Milligram, Microwave Mountain, The Coal Men
Week 4: Joanna Barbera, Bee Taylor, Eli Cook

Tonight, I am going to see Kris Kristofferson at The Basement East!

The genesis of E2TG was me posting my morning playlist. When I started the blog, I didn't think that was enough for a music blog.... and it may not be, but here I am... and here is my morning shuffle seven years down the road....

Trending Thursday Morning Shuffle - Trouble By the Score Mix

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

Always a good night, when I get to see two former E2TG Artists of the Year share a stage.  Darrin Bradbury and Jon Latham along with Nick Nace opened up their residency which will run every Wednesday for the rest of May.  Ryan Sobb opened the show.  It was my first time seeing this recent arrival in Nashville, and I was highly impressed.

Coincidentally, on this date in E2TG history 2017, Jon Latham was scheduled to play week 2 of our sixth anniversary residency, but he ended up in the ICU - so we made the night a benefit and raised some money.  That night both Nick and Darrin played.

It's Thursday, and time to delve back into the "New Music" playlist.  I'l running a little late today, so let's jump right in!

Wild Wednesday Morning Shuffle - You Can Call Me Bob Mix

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

Counting down!  We are less than a month away from the first night of the E2TG 7th Anniversary Residency at The 5 Spot!  I am super-stoked to have Clark Paterson playing a full-band set to open the night.  Then, The Big Dumb and Rayvon Pettis are cooking up something special.  This will be a night you do not want to miss!   It's going to a jam-packed night of music so make plans to get there early so you don't miss a minute.  Doors should open sometime around 5:30-5:45pm and the music should get going around 6:15.

This amazing night is just night one of four - every Thursday in June.  Ted Drozdowski's Psychedelic Circus, The End Men, Brian Milligram, Microwave Mountain, The Coal Men, Eli Cook, Bee Taylor, Joanna Barbara and more are all on-tap for this residency.  I am hoping to have a few copies of my novel The Drift to sell.

It is Wild Wednesday - a virtual potpourri of musical selections....  Let's shuffle!

Trending Tuesday Morning Shuffle - Blood on my Sleeve Mix

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

Well, I have to say yesterday was much better than last Monday.  A week ago, I had spent 7.5 at the dentist office. Yesterday, I took in an afternoon baseball game, recorded a future Double Shot show, found out my proof copies of my first novel The Drift will arrive today, and I got my ticket in the mail for next week's Kris Kristofferson show at The Basement East.

Let's dive into the New Music playlist for what we like to call Trending Tuesday.  As usual, we have a crazy eclectic mix of music.  These are all relatively new releases or in a couple of cases recent to E2TG that we wanted to feature.

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

Week 1:  Rayvon Pettis, The Big Dumb, Clark Paterson

Week 2:  The End Men, Ted Drozdowski's Psychedelic Circus, (Special Guest TBA)

Week 3:  Microwave Mountain, The Coal Men, Brian Milligram

And finally, for our fourth and final week, E2TG is pleased to announce that our guests will be!

Eli Cook:  Hailing from Charlottesville, Virginia, Eli Cook's latest album High Dollar Gospel has been getting rave reviews. He is fresh off some dates opening for the legendary Robin Trower.  E2TG is thrilled to have him help close out our 7th Year Anniversary Residency!

Bee Taylor:  One of Nashville's most electrifying artists, Bee Taylor, will be joining us - backed by her stellar band!  Described as a cross between Amy Winehouse and Tom Waits - if you've never seen Bee Taylor live - you have to experience to fully appreciate her power!

Joanna Barbera:  Opening our final week will be one of my favorite local songwriters. Joanna Barbera recently had a song prominently featured in the CBS television series Criminal Minds. Her most recent EP Imago is a favorite of mine. Get there early to catch her set!

Now, it is Friday and time for our Featured Friday shuffle. Guess what, we have another wildly diverse set of songs... so let's do it!

Trending Thursday Morning Shuffle - Wide-Eyed Fishing Mix

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

In case you missed the last two posts, E2TG will be celebrating our first 7 years with a Residency every Thursday in June at The 5 Spot.  These EARLY shows kick off at 6:00pm, and we have stacked line-ups every week, so you will want to get there early.

Week 1:  Rayvon Pettis, The Big Dumb, and Clark Paterson
Week 2: The End Men, Ted Drozdowski's Psychedelic Circus, plus a special guest opener TBA

Onto Week 3!  I am stoked to get the opportunity to present two of my favorite bands and one of my favorite songwriters in one incredible night.  I am especially excited to be able to showcase the diversity of talent making music in this city.

Microwave Mountain: With raucous energy and rocking good vibes, Microwave Mountain are red hot right now.  On the heels of the 4/20 - release show for Sick Licks, Jamie Timm and company will be playing a pretty rare early show. You will not want to miss this.

The Coal Men:  Led by guitarist, songwriter, producer extraordinaire Dave Coleman, The Coal Men have been making music together since 1999.  Their latest album is called Pushed to the Side. They are definitely one of my favorite local bands - great songs and a great sound. Editors note: The Poster above erroneously lists "The Coal Men" has "The Coalmen" - I apologize for the error and will be fixing the graphic as soon as I am able.

Brian Milligram:  Opening the night will be one of my favorite songwriters here in town, and one that many of you may be seeing for the first time. Be sure to get their early - Milligram brings a punk spirit to his songs.  His sometimes caustic nature belies a tenderness that comes through his lyrics.

Tomorrow, we will reveal our guests for the 4th and final week.  Stay tuned!

On to our shuffle for this Thursday!

I'm not sure if I have ever been as excited about the line-up of artists in my "New Music" playlist as I am right now. So much new music from new artists and veteran performers - covering just about every genre and style of music imaginable.  Today's shuffle is a good cross-section of that diversity!

Wild Wednesday Morning Shuffle - Bad Hombre Mix

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

Time to reveal our guests for Week 2 of the E2TG 7th Anniversary Residency at The 5 Spot. This one will be held Thursday June 14, 2018. That's Flag Day, so if you bring a gently used flag, you can get in for just $5.00.  Otherwise, the admission is $5.00.

Ted Drozdowski has been a favorite of mine, since the first time I saw him leave the stage, use a wine glass as a slide, and generally take Hill Country blues into the stratosphere.  I once saw him walk off the stage at the old Family Wash, do the aforementioned wine glass trick, walk out the front door, come back in the side door and get back on stage will playing the whole time. He has a new configuration called Ted Drozdowski's Psychedelic Circus, and I am thrilled to have them for my show!

The End Men. If you have been following E2TG for awhile, you will recognize the name The End Men. Led by Matthew Hendershot and Livia Ranalli, Brooklyn, New York band The End Men have their own unique and rocking take on blues music. In late 2011, early 2012 - when Ear to the Ground was just an infant music blog, I was introduced to their music. Getting to know them and their music was a key factor in my continuing to press on through those early days. They were the E2TG Band of the Year in 2013 (the first Band of the Year that I selected myself). The End Men last played Nashville (I believe) was in September 2014 (at The Basement for the all-day post-Americana show that The Basement put on.  It is high time they came back! You do not want to miss this!

Opening the show is TBA! I've seen TBA several times, and every time it is a completely different experience. Kind of like Sour Du Jour.  Seriously, I can't tell you yet who the opener is going to be, but I guarantee it will be good!  Plan to get there early!

On to the Wild Wednesday Shuffle!  Remember, on Wednesday, our shuffle comes from all the songs I have stored on my phone. So, it can be new music, classics, from the E2TG archives etc.

Trending Tuesday Morning Shuffle - Bring Me Down Mix

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

At long last, I am ready to start revealing the line-up for the E2TG 7th Anniversary Celebration.  Like last year, we are hosting a residency.  This year, it is every Thursday in June!  There are four weeks in June and four more days in this week, so the plan is to reveal the line-up for a different week each day. I thought we would be linear and start with Week1 - June 7, 2018!

Rayvon Pettis is the reigning E2TG Artist of the Year, he is great guy, and an incredible songwriter. I am so stoked to have him as part of my residency.  Yesterday, when I was on my way to my epic dental appointment, I listened to the title track of his awesome album, Dying Light, and it straight up gave me goosebumps.

Rayvon will be backed The Big Dumb. The Big Dumb features Javi Jones, Anna Harris, Griffin, Stephen Nicholas Roberts, and Daniel Dolive.  Besides being great musicians and a super tight backing band, The Big Dumb features several great songwriters and they are one of my favorite bands.  They stay pretty busy backing other people and doing other cool things, but when they play their own set, they totally rock. So, I am thrilled to have The Big Dumb doing a set of their own.

When I first heard about Clark Paterson, all I knew was that he was really tall (keep in mind I'm not really all that tall, so most people are tall to me) and he had a big beard. On his album The Final Tradition, he cuts a pretty intimidating figure. When I finally met him, he turned out to be a really nice guy. As for the album, it is among my favorites. I am excited to have him and his band opening the night.

The line-up is stacked and full, so we will try to start close to on-time - so make plans to arrive.  Thursday June 7, 2018 6:00pm, at The 5 Spot.

On to our shuffle!  We start with a #TwoferTuesday which we do every time it Tuesday and our random shuffle brings up two songs in a row by the same artist.
