Overall, I'm just trying to mosey into 2018 (except for work, where I have been slammed). Last night, I had my first night out of the new year... of course, I was at The 5 Spot, where I saw East Nashville's favorite Pirate band, Tom Mason and the Blue Buccaneers. Mark Robinson joined them on-stage for one song, and sat in on part of another song from his barstool.
Next, week - E2TG dives fully into the new year, but for today, we have another "wild card" shuffle (from all the songs on my phone memory card).
It's a pretty cool list - so let's check it out.
"Elbmur" by Bark
We start with E2TG faves, Bark (Tim and Susan from Tim Lee 3). Their full length debut (following the earlier self-titled EP) is called Year of the Dog. According to the Chinese Zodiac, 2018 will be a Year of the Dog (the Chinese year starts on February 16). Bark features swampy music, and their live shows are rocking.
"It's Different for Girls" by Of Montreal
Next up, we have Athens band, Of Montreal with a track from the 2016 album (their fourteenth studio album) called Innocence Reaches. The band formed in 1996 and their style has evolved over the years. They are identified as part of the Elephant 6 collective.
"When You Gonna Wake Up?" by Bob Dylan
Next we have a track from Bob Dylan's The Bootleg Series Vol. 13: Trouble No More 1979–1981 which was released in 2017. This live recording is from Oslo, Norway July 9, 1981. The song was on his 1979 album Slow Train Coming.
"Esc_apology" by Cellarscape
Next, we have a track from 2017 Earie winners Cellarscape and their album Exo Echo. Cellarscape was on of my favorite "discoveries" of 2017 (the band formed in 2003). Cellarscape is a recording project of Paul Terry and is based in the UK.
"Funtone?" by Insane Jane
Next, we have a track from A Green Little Pill by late 80s - early 90s Atlanta band Insane Jane. I was turned onto their music by a good friend, and I have worn this album out over the years. From their Facebook page, it looks like they reunited in 2012 for a few shows, and then a few members including lead singer Yellow played a n acoustic set in 2016. Note that the YouTube clip for this song is from a compilation called Sk8terboy Rock!, Vol. 1.
"The Longest Road" by Pinmonkey
Next we have a track from the 2002 self-titled album by Pinmonkey - a Nashville country band that was active from 1998 until 2006. Pinmonkey includes drummer Rick Schell, who I last saw about a week ago playing with Mark Robinson Band (and he was fantastic as always).
"Expectations" by Brian Wright
Next up is 2016 E2TG Artist of the Year Brian Wright with one of two new songs from Cafe Rooster Sessions Vol. 2. Wright continued to kick major ass in 2017 both solo and with Aaron Lee Tasjan. He tore it up at the E2TG Residency show hosted by Cafe Rooster Records, and along with Tasjan - he was one of the stars of the Americana Fest in September.
"Tastes Like TV" by The Danbury Lie
The Danbury Lie is the 3rd most tagged artist in E2TG history (behind just Darrin Bradbury and The End Men). He has recorded and released a series of albums over the years that I have known of his music, and with the last couple of years he has ventured into video work (see the clip for this song for an example). This is a track from his April 2016 album Without Mirrors.
"Only Sixteen" by Sam Cooke
Next, the great Sam Cooke with a song he released in 1959. The song was inspired by the sixteenth birthday of Lou Rawls' stepsister. It was originally written for actor Steve Rowland who used to hang around the studio where Cooke recorded. Rowland asked Cooke to write a song for him, but Rowland''s manager rejected the song so Cooke recorded it himself. The song is credited to Cooke, Lou Adler, and Herb Alpert. Dr. Hook had a top ten hit with the song in 1976.
"Rotten Tooth" by Brock Zeman
And we close out this first week of 2018 with the title track of the 2013 album by E2TG favorite Brock Zeman. I'm really bummed that I missed out of seeing Zeman and Blair Hogan perform during Americana Fest (they are consistently one of my favorite acts to see live), but I did run into them during that week. Here's to more opportunities to see them in 2018.
