E2TG 6/18/2020 - Featured Friday - Foolish and Blue Mix (Shelf Life Remix)

Happy Juneteenth!

So much on my mind on so many fronts. The world is on fire and changes are coming.  The old guard is trying to inflict as much damage as possible while they still can, and the apologist and enablers are wringing hands and trying to explain it all away.  The next five to eight months or more will not be easy.  I am already stressing out about election day. There is so much at stake.

It is Father's Day weekend, the first Father's Day since my Dad passed away. In general, lately, I am not a fan of holidays. It creates a lot of pressure on people whose lives don't conform to some socially accepted pattern.

Nashville is moving forward with reopening - going against their own roadmap - as cases and transmission rates increase. Most people seem to think that if they pretend it is all over - then it will go away.  Meanwhile, the right continues to push the idea that the pendemic is a media-driven hoax or exaggeration.

But, despite all this, overall, I am upbeat and optimistic about life. That could and probably will change, but I am enjoying it.

Well, this week's Featured Friday Playlist is twice as long as last week's.  There were a bunch of new releases this week.  Our recap begins below with songs 1-7.  We will recap the rest next week in this space.

Featured Friday Playlist (Songs 1-7)

1. "Foolish and Blue" by Ladycouch
Excited to kick off this week's Playlist with the debut single by one of my favorite bands. Ladycouch is Allen Thompson and Keisha Bailey plus.  I still remember seeing them at The 5 Spot absolutely filling the stage - I couldn't even count how many there were on stage - I was too busy digging the music. The thing is - with horn section, keys, guitars, basses, drums, background singers - the manage to sound fantastic. And they sound fantastic recorded here. Long live Ladycouch.
2. "Shelf Life" by Kristen Englenz
As I understand it, this is the final release from the Ingenue sessions, and it just goes to show you how deep that album is - that a wonderful song like this didn't make the cut. Kristen Englenz - first came to my attention when she played an E2TG Residency show back in 2017 (I think I'm too lazy to look it up) at the recommendation of Jon Latham. Since, then I have seen her blossom professionally and personally.
3. "The Good Old Days" by Will Payne Harrison
I played this song on yesterday's Greetings from Nashville, but it makes its Spotify debut today. Will Payne Harrison is a Louisiana native now based in Nashville. This is a wonderful song - released ahead a forthcoming album - which I cannot wait to hear.
4. "The 'Quarantine Blues' Blues" by Carrus & Kurtz
The word "genius" is overused these days, I think. The word "overused" is also overused. The album is called The Genius of Carrus and Kurtz Vol. There Are No Words. Volume 2 was released today - it is subtitled It is Important and Everything is Important.  But this is from volume 1.  Carrus is Cameron Carrus who moved to Nashville almost seven years ago with Darrin Bradbury and Adam Kurtz who moved to Nashville roughly the same time or so (but not with Darrin Bradbury). They are 2/3 of Buck N Stuff. This new music was recorded in a three hour session during the pandemic. It is ambient pedal steel and bass music. Honestly, the best ambient pedal steel and bass music I have heard all week.  Seriously, it is cool stuff.
5. "The Gambler" by Dolour
Not the Don Schlitz penned Kenny Rogers song.  The new Dolour album The Royal We is the first in over a decade. Dolour was the Seattle band of Shane Tutmarc who has been in Nashville for over a decade. I have been a fan of Shane's music - released under various incarnations over the years, and I have to say this new album has blown me away.
6. "Streetlights" by Buildings and Food
We first featured Buildings and Food back at the end of 2018/beginning of 2019 - with their previous release Quick Beat Save. This is their new single - ahead of their new album which has a September 25th release date. Buildings and Food (aka Jen K. Wilson) is an electronic music project from Toronto, Canada. I have to admit, the band first caught my attention because the name reminded me of the Talking Heads album, but it was the music that kept my attention. Digging this new song.
7. "Yellow Dotted Line #1" by Paul Nelson
I met Paul Nelson at a poetry marathon last year - where he was one of the featured musical performers. I read a couple of poems. This is the second single that he has released this year. I am enjoying getting to know his music.
