In the 10 year existence of E2TG, change has been the operative word. The blog and how I do it have undergone many changes - usually driven by some change in my circumstance or schedule etc. Now, with going out to hear music becoming a thing again, I am realizing that I made changes over the last 13-14 months that are going to be difficult to maintain in the emerging new reality. 

I don't know yet what changes will be needed, and it may not happen overnight and the changes may be incremental. It also may take a series of missteps to arrive something that works. Bear with me and thanks as always for reading. 

Featured Friday Playlist recap Part 5 (songs 46-55):

46. "Paris" by Teresa Guidry

Nashville based singer-songwriter who was on Season 10 of The Voice with her first single of 2021.

47. "Hobo Stomp" by Razorhouse

Next up, we have the single from this alternative rock band from Chicago. A really cool song. 

48. "Through the Flames" by Empiires

Next up, we have some hard rock music from Texas. 

49. "Indigo Screams" by Pennies by the Pound

Next up, we have a Finnish band that combines psych rock with 80s college rock to great great sound. This is the lead track from their new album due out a week from tomorrow. 

50. "The Girl in the Barren Room" by Bad Dreams Fancy Dress

Next up, we have the new single from the forthcoming Bi Iconic album from this UK band that originally formed in the late 80s. Spurred on my a Facebook group set up by fans, this new incarnation of the band is doing some cool things. 

51. "Get Me Through It - Live" by The Purrs

Next up, we have a track from the new live album, We Thought There'd Be More People Here, by this dark psych pop band from the Pacific NW. 

52. "The Return" by To Twelve

Next up, we have lovely song about travelling from this duo from the Netherlands who spend time busking through Europe.  Really great stuff. 

53. "Occupied" by Dolly Ave

Next up, we have a track from the debut album, Sleep by this emerging Vietnamese-American singer-songwriter who grew up in Kansas City, Missouri before leaving for art school in Chicago. Really excited to have this song in our playlist. 

54. "Monster Tv" by Death Pop Radio

Next up, we have another debut album this from Chicago based hard pop/grunge band. 

55. "Silent Trees" by Pentral 

And we close with a track from What Lies Ahead of Us from Brazilian prog rock/metal band Pentral who worked producer Tim Palmer on this new album. A great way to close out this segment of music, and the playlist for this week.

As we approach the 10th anniversary of E2TG - Ear to the Ground, I have been reflecting on the balance of constantly moving forward vs. taking time to reflect upon the past.  I see artists who deal with this struggle in different ways: some artists/bands remove all traces of their early work from the internet while other artists find ways to "celebrate" their earlier work. 

Overall, I support an artists right to deal with their earlier work however they see fit, but I would offers some thoughts to consider: 1. There is a certain type of music fan, who is interested in digging into the overall arc of an artists career. This type of fan isn't going to necessarily judge an older album as being inferior to the later work - but rather see it in the context of an artist find his/her/their voice.  2. Even if  you ultimately decide to remove an album from the internet - that is not to say some intrepid music blogger night not dig up an MP3 from some remote sub-sub folder and bring it to light. So, be prepared to accept this with humility.  3. Consider keeping the music in your own archives because what is embarrassing today might be the source of personal nostalgia in a few year.  I especially gear these unsolicited bits of advice to younger artists but I think it is relevant to anyone. 

Of special note, when you or someone else is digging into the musical past - there are often complicated or painful things which may come up - bands that broke up under contentious terms, relationships that ended badly, tragic deaths.  Especially the first two scenarios, I think it is similar to the questions surrounding an artist whose reputation has been sullied by words or actions. The eternal question of can you appreciate the art while reviling the person who made the art.  Can you appreciate the output of the band regardless of how things ended for the band members... 

In looking back over ten years of E2TG, there is a fair share all of the above and more. As a music blogger, I have to decide should I featured a song, an artist, or band - whose circumstances have changed - i.e. the work of a previous married couple... it is easier when it is a celebrity couple like Richard and Linda Thompson vs. people who one has come to know personally. 

In my mind, all of that uncomfortableness is part of the work in examining the past - which overall is important work. 

Anyway, onward... 

Featured Friday Recap Part 3 (Songs 17-21):

17. "Quarantine Blues" by Tombstones in Their Eyes

L.A. based psych-shoegaze band Tombstones in Their Eyes return with an new album called Looking for a Light. We first featured this band back in 2018, and it is great to have their heavy rock sounds back on E2TG. 

18. "Not the Same" by Recreation!

Next up, we have the first of two tracks from the French label Chinese Man Records - Dig It! series.  First up, we have a track from this electro, hip-hop, groove band from France. Great track. 

19. "Hasta Siempre" by SupaChill, Mary May, Nuffsaid

Our second track from Chinese Man Records and their Dig It! series comes from SupaChill who combines hip hop, rap, and salsa.  Joined here by Mary May and Nuffsaid.  Dig it! I do!

20. "Sweetness and Pain" by Sarah McQuaid

Next up, we have a recent single from the forthcoming album and video series, the St. Buryan sessions from this UK based singer-songwriter. A stunning a capella song. Really lovely and a fascinating project. 

21. "Cruel" by Atomic Bronco

And we close out this segment of music with the first taste of the forthcoming EP Spectrum from this UK-Based US slacker rock band.  I love this sound of this one.

Just a reminder - due to the holidays, we are stretching this week's Featured Friday recap over the next two weeks (Monday-Wednesday each week) - which is good- because this week's Playlist is jam packed with music.   Today - songs 25-32:

25. "Ritual" by Genus Ordinis Dei

First up today, we have the opening track from Glare of Deliverance - the new concept album from this Italian symphonic death metal band. The album tells the story of Eleanor - a young woman persecuted for crimes of witchcraft by the Holy Inquisition. 

26. "Long Cold Night Walk" by Victor Jones

Next up, we have our second listen and the title track from the new album by this L.A. based chamber rock artist. A really lovely song - perfect for the longest night of the year.

27. "Screaming Through the Noise" by The Room

Next up, we have something special.  This is a live recording of a song which was originally included on the 2012 debut album Open Fire - by this melodic rock band from the Southeast of the UK.  The song was written about vocalist Martin Wilson's son Josh and his struggles with childhood cancer. Sadly, Josh recently passed away at age 20, and the band have released this recording (from a 2018 performance in France) as a tribute.  All proceeds from the song will go to Phillis Tuckwell Hospice who cared for Josh. 28. "Snollygoster Goon" by The Lickerish Quartet

Next up, we have the first single from the upcoming 2nd EP by this band that features band members of Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds, Slash’s Snake Pit, Finn Brothers, Alice Cooper, Air & Beck - and all formerly of Jellyfish. 

29. "Thin Disguise" by Davy Williamson

Next up, we have the debut single from this Wilmington, NC based hard rock multi-instrumentalist and singer-songwriter. The song deals with Williamson's personal demons and is offered as a message of healing and hope.

30. "Keeping My Distance" by Rylan Brooks

Next up, we have the first single from If Wishes Were Horses (due in March) from the outlaw country duo of Nate Rylan and Chris Brooks.  The album was recorded in Nashville with an all-star line-up that includes Guthrie Trapp, Eddie Bayers, and Michael Spriggs to name just three - the band was directed by Dean Miller. 

31. "A Modern Man's Way to Improve" by Royal Horses

Next up, we have the title track from the debut album by this band from South Mississippi. The album is a love letter to the music that defined the New South.  The album was an official Record Store Day release and is now available on streaming platforms. 

32. "A Range of Light" by Forester
 

And we close with the title track from the second album by L.A. based electronic indie band Forester. A lovely song and a great way to close out this diverse set of music.
