Americana Music Association Fest 2017 rolls on... I think my total sleep for this week is still in the single digits. Maybe the very low double digits...I'm too tired to figure that out. But no rest for the wicked... and things roll on tonight. Once again, there is way too much going to catch it all, but there are numerous really cool things happening:
Early this evening: The Wild Ponies host their annual Happy Hour - at The Family Wash. Three years ago, it was at that event that I first me Julie Christensen and Grant Peeples - not a bad day.
Also, Bloodshot Records is holding their party - outdoors at The Groove in East Nashville with Jon Langford and much more, Tim Carroll's Rock n Roll Happy Hour is an official AMA event, if you are from out of town, that is a slice of the real Nashville experience that you should check out, and the fine folks at Green Room Music Source are throwing a party at the American Legion in Inglewood. Technically, it may be possible to catch at least of part of all of these... I'll leave that to you to figure out.
Later, much to be recommended... Joey Kneiser's showcase is at The East Room, India Ramey is at The Country, and The Basement East has a great lineup that includes Little Bandit, Patrick Sweany, Aaron Lee Tasjan, and E2TG Artist of the Year 2016 Brian Wright. There is also great music at The OG Basement and other venues across the city. It is probably physically impossible to catch all of these, but you are more than welcome to.make an attempt. Better yet, pick one and then enjoy that show and don't stress over all that you are missing.
Hey - ICYMI, we have an AMA-themed guest blog post from Collins de la Cour. I love the way she writes, and she has some good things to say. Check it out HERE.
Well - I have managed to keep up on blog posts during AMA, and today is FRIDAY! This is the day when we post about "featured" music on E2TG. Let's shuffle!
"A Little Tonight" by Jared Tyler
We start things off with a track from the most excellent Dirt on Your Hands album - which came out back in June. Jared Tyler is a Tulsa, Oklahoma singer-songwriter-musician perhaps best known for his work as the great Malcolm Holcombe's side-man. This album proves to me that Tyler is a great songwriter and performer in his own right.
"World of Pain" by Phil Lomac
Next up, we have our second listen to Northern Cities Southern Skies by this singer-songwriter originally from Chicago but now based in North Carolina.
"Another Day" by Boris Garcia
Another second listen, this is a track from Around Some Corner by this fascinating band from Philadelphia. Their latest album (their fifth national release) was produced by Tim Carbone of Railroad Earth.
"Love is Not a Sin" by Wild Ponies
I mentioned that The Wild Ponies Happy Hour tonight, and then they show up in the shuffle with one of my favorite tracks of theirs. A true Nashville Statement. This is taken from the Strange Freedom: Songs of Love and Protest which was fairly recently released
"Yellowstone National Park" by Discount Ravioli
The crazy, creative, and talented young people from Connecticut are back with not one, not two, not three, but four tracks in today's shuffle. This track answers the question "how many bears on in Yellowstone National Park" and points out that Yogi is a pretty common name among bears.
"The Real Goodnight/ Sweet Maria (Reprise)" by Discount Ravioli
About 80% of the way through this 53 track album, there is a track called "Goodnight". It is supposed to be the end of the release but it isn't. This is the real goodbye.
"We Made It" by The Electric Grandmother
Next up, more SitCom-Core out of Washington D.C. The current album is called Cancelled. Really digging this album.
"Skiffle Tune" by Discount Ravioli
Back to Discount Ravioli - the Baby Arm Sessions album was recorded in a tent in one member's backyard and in another member's basement. FYI - the definition of skiffle is: "a style of 1920s and 1930s jazz deriving from blues, ragtime, and folk music, using both improvised and conventional instruments."
"The Man in the Orange Suit" by Discount Ravioli
And our fourth and final Discount Ravioli track. This one is about a man in an orange suit. Have I mentioned how much I love Discount Ravioli. Well, I do!
"Words of a Drunken Man" by Dan Brodie
We close things out with one of three original songs from Australian artist Dan Brodie's Lost Not Found album. The album mostly consists of reinterpretations of other peoples' songs.
