Wild Wednesday Morning Shuffle - Spike Driver Mix

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

I'm back after an unintentionally extra long, long weekend.  So much going on in the world. And, right now, I don't feel able to even begin to comment effectively.  Life is interesting. Life can be hard. Life can be unexpected. Life is a constant lesson being learned. Sometimes grace (for want of a better word) comes from unexpected places and people. It is easy to focus on all of the negatives - whether it is the state of the world or the state of our own lives, whether it is forces beyond our control or our own human fallibility.

It is Wednesday and as per our regular schedule, I have shuffled up all of the songs currently residing on my phone memory card. The results are "wild" which is why I call Wednesday shuffle's "Wild Wednesday".  Things start off in a decidedly experimental vein before moving into standard (if awesome) song structures.

Let's shuffle!

"Prom Night" by a place both wonderful and strange

First up, is perhaps the longest band/artist name in E2TG history (perhaps).  a place both wonderful and strange, played the Crying Wolf last month (which I unfortunately missed). From all indications, their live shows are audio/visual spectacles. They have an other-worldly sound that draws comparisons to Twin Peaks - so much so that they were commissioned by the David Lynch Foundation to provide music for an exhibit of Mr. Lynch's artwork a couple of years ago.  This track is from their latest release "What I Speak I Create" which came out about a month ago.

"Mensdom" by Théan

From the E2TG vaults.  Thean Slabbert has been a recurring figure in E2TG history - under the names Velodrones and Bosveld mostly. This is a track released under his own name which I cannot find much about on line.  I added it to my E2TG megamix which is what I shuffle from on Thursdays but it showed up today. Cool stuff from a talented guy.

"She Stands in a Storm" by  Black Needle Noise with Andrea Kerr

Our second listen to Black Needle Noise which is a project of John Fryer of This Mortal Coil. The album is called Lost in Reflections and features several different collaborations including this one with Andrea Kerr of the band Colt. Really digging this stuff.

"Blots of Paint" by Grounded

Next up, another form the E2TG archives. Grounded were a Florida band that we picked up several years ago.  Really dug their sound which was kind of dark, kind of experimental.  And, in typical E2TG odd connections fashion, I either learned about Grounded through And the Giraffe or vice-versa (it was like 5 years ago so who knows). And the Giraffe were originally from Florida (later Nashville before disbanding) and featured Josh Morris who has produced Jon Latham's last two albums.  Grounded broke up in 2015 or so. This track is from an untitled EP. The full EP is in the You Tube playlist (link below)

"Radio Flyer" by Renfree Isaacs

Moving out of the experimental realm... this is one of my favorite tracks from the Renfree Isaacs self-titled album which came out earlier this year.  Really love this.

"Spike Driver Blues" by Mississippi John Hurt

Mississippi John Hurt was a country blues singer/guitarist whose songs have been covered my many legendary performers. Late in his life, he moved to Washington D.C. and was recorded for the Library of Congress.  This particular track came to me via the soundtrack to the incredible PBS documentary series American Epic.

"Lloyd" by Ladies Gun Club

Next we have a track from Cafe Rooster recording artists Ladies Gun Club which features the incredible Sally Jaye along with Sarah Roberts. Their album Take My Love Away was released last year and features Brian Wright and Aaron Lee Tasjan on guitar.  And it is my own damn fault that this is their first appearance on E2TG. Look for Ladies Gun Club at Americana Fest next week!

"Big Bess" by Si Cranstoun

Si Cranstoun is a London based recording artist. This is a track from his most recent album, Old School - which features vintage sounding, modern rocking rhythm and blues music.
