Music City Monday Morning Shuffle - Dress Like Minnie Pearl Mix

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

Best laid plans...  I started this like I do every day. I had a dental appointment at 11:30, and I planned to take the rest of the day off work. I hoped to make it home by like 2 or something, and I was going to finish this post and do a bunch of other things. Well, I just got home around 8:00pm.  But, this was such I good shuffle that I didn't want to let it go without posting it.

So, my written contribution will be minimal but enjoy.

Featured Friday Morning Shuffle - Are You Having Fun Boys and Girls? Mix

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

Reminder the Magnolia Roads American Roots Hoedown III kicks off tonight with a pre-party at Dee's.  Details and feature on Taylor Kropp (plus links to the first four parts of my preview and features on other artists can be found HERE.

Among the artists performing tonight at Dee's is Allen Thompson.  I went out (for the first time in over a week) last night for the last night of Allen's residency at The 5 Spot.  Maxwell Putnam opened -and as usual he was awesome.  Allen played with a ten piece band that he dubbed Lady Couch.  The band included Jack Silverman, Clint Maine, and Lilly Winwood, and the Nashville Horns. They played a loose, fun set of originals and choice covers. Pretty awesome for an early show (it would have been awesome regardless of the time).

Now, it is FRIDAY!  We have a very mixed bag of music to "Feature".  So sit back, as we take the week out in style.

Wild Wednesday Morning Shuffle - You Could Really Get It On Mix

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

The Magnolia Roads American Roots Hoedown III kicks off in two days. We have been helping to spread the word about this cool event because:

1.  It features some awesome musicians - several of whom have been featured on E2TG
2. It's being held in two of my favorite places to hang out.
3. They asked if we would.
4. That's the kind of blog we are.
(not necessarily in that order)

If you have missed or want to relive my preview posts - they can be found here:

Meanwhile, it is Wednesday and that is the day things get "Wild" here at E2TG.  We call it "Wild Wednesday" because the shuffle on Wednesday comes from all the songs saved to my phones memory.

Let's go!

In case you missed yesterday's post or just need a recap. The Magnolia Roads American Roots Hoedown III is happening here in Nashville this coming weekend. For it's third edition, the hoedown has expanded to two nights. It kicks off Friday at Dee's with Dee's own Daniel Lawrence Walker kicking things off.  That pre-party will fill the entire night at Dee's and feature some of my favorite artists and some new favorites. The hoedown continues on Saturday at The 5 Spot - where the show will start early and go late with some more great roots acts - including some who will be familiar to E2TG readers.  Details and the second featured artist after the jump...

The good folks at Magnolia Roads are putting on their 3rd Annual American Roots Hoedown this coming weekend in Nashville.  The two nights of music are being held at two of my favorite venues and features some of my favorite artists, so it seemed a good fit for me to tell you a bit about this event and the people playing.  All this week, I will be highlighting a different artist with some information and a short interview.

Let's begin:

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

Next week, I expect to start promoting the E2TG 7th Anniversary Residency at The 5 Spot coming in June.  For now, just go ahead and block off every Thursday in June from 6 to 8:30pm.  We have a great line up every week.  I'm still ironing out some final details... but it's time to get talking about this. I still can't believe it has been almost seven years (it will be seven years in mid-May) since I began this incredible journey.  Thanks to everyone who has joined me at some point along the way.

Well, let's see... today is 4/20, it's Record Store Day eve, it is #NationalSchoolWalkoutDay - on the 19th anniversary of the Columbine massacre which did not teach us the lessons it should have.

It is also #FeaturedFriday here at E2TG - the "New Music" playlist topped 600 songs earlier this week - it's just below that number now, but I already have some new music to add to it.  I may have to go in and cut some tracks from albums that have been around awhile and been featured pretty heavily. Or not... We shall see.

Let's shuffle!

Trending Thursday Morning Shuffle - Siri-ously Mix

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

Well, I finally ventured out of the house last night - to Dee's in Madison.  Caught most of the last hour of The One and Only Bill Davis doing his always fun weekly set.

Later, one of my favorite local songwriters Joanna Barbera took the stage playing with a new violin player. Then, she was joined by Dee's co-owner Daniel Walker for a wonderful version of Tom Petty's "Breakdown".  Walker did a short set of his own songs.  Daniel Walker was followed by E2TG's #1 Most Tagged Artist Ever - Darrin Bradbury. Bradbury's set included some songs from his forthcoming new album - including one that is being covered by Joe Pug!, a brand new song, and some older songs - like "Denim-clad Acid Wash Man" "Swordfish", and even a version of the Big Wilson River song "80 Dead Armadillos".  Big Wilson River was Bradbury's band back in New Jersey - and also my (and E2TG's) first exposure to his music.  In fact, our crack research department found that "80 Dead Armadillos" was the first Darrin Bradbury/Big Wilson River song featured here - back in July of 2012.

In addition to the great music, I had a cool front porch hang - met some new people, met an on-line friend for the first time, and talked music and life, and I got to hang with a cool, cute dog that belongs to Brad of This Frontier Needs Heroes.

Not bad for a Wednesday night in Madison.

I added a bunch of new music - including some really cool stuff by some legendary UK rockers - one of the new songs showed up today - more will follow soon!

Let's shuffle up our "New Music" playlist and see what is "Trending" on E2TG.

Wild Wednesday Morning Shuffle - That's Tru Life Mix

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

Somehow this topsy-turvy weather of late seems to be right in sync with the topsy-turvy state of this nation, and both of them are making me sick....

But, I press on...

It is Wednesday - mid-week, and this is the day, we at E2TG set aside to get "wild". Wild is in quotation marks because.. well, we basically do what we do every day just drawing on songs from a larger pool - namely every song saved to my phone's memory.  The results are predictably unpredictable.

Let's just jump right to it!

Trending Tuesday Morning Shuffle - Exotic Calls Mix

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

A little over a year ago, I first began posting an occasional "political" commentary on E2TG. As I stated then, it was not something I wanted to do and that I did not really consider most of what I wrote as "political" (although it can be a fine line sometimes). As I intimated then, and still feel strongly today, there should be room at the table for people who hold a wide variety of political and social positions. At it's ideal and best, the United States (and our leaders) should be a shining example of lively debate and measured compromise.  Where we find ourselves now is embroiled and entrenched in hyper-partisanship and obstruction. Our elections are compromised in so many ways. The effects of Citizen's United (an Orwellian named law) are devastating to democracy and harmful to the republic. Voter suppression, gerrymandering, and unchecked foreign influences are the nails in the coffin.

I am cautiously hopeful about the mid-term elections, and I still cannot imagine that the current president will last his full term - but even if everything goes the way I want it to, we will still have miles to go...

I try not to let it get me down.  I do what I can, but the results are mostly not within my control. Life can still be a beautiful thing. Friendships and family and the beauty of the world. The mysteries of science and time and space surround us.

For me, music remains a source of strength. Songs that comfort, songs that excite, songs that motivate action, songs that inspire....

E2TG has provided me with an incredible opportunity to hear a ton of music that I might otherwise never hear, and to meet talented people who are pushing against long odds and seeming disinterest at times - to do what they feel compelled to do....

So, I push on - as I approach seven years of E2TG - offering my small contribution by putting music out there hopefully in an interesting way.

Let's shuffle the "New Music" playlist on this Trending Tuesday.

Music City Monday Morning Shuflle - Straggled By Love Mix

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

The crazy weather continues (not just in Nashville, I know).  We had temps in the 80's at the end of last week, rain all day Saturday, cooler weather Sunday, and cold weather with a few snow flurries this morning.  Temps are supposed to be up into the 70's later in the week. I say this not to give a weather report, but to say, the change in weather has really had an effect on the state of how I feel - so I laid pretty low most of the weekend - except to help celebrate my radio DJ partner - Sue's birthday on Sunday. It was a wonderful time with wonderful people at a wonderful place (Dee's).

Now, it is time for Music City Monday shuffle.  This is the only of my shuffles that comes from a Spotify playlist.  It is a huge playlist (ever-expanding) of current and former Nashville area artists and bands. It is an eclectic mix of older music and newer music - crossing musical boundaries.

Let's shuffle!

Featured Friday Morning Shuffle - No No No But Yes Mix

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

Well, country music was saved last night, thanks to Buck N Stuff.  Their CD release show for their live album Saviors of Country Music: Live at The American Legion Post 82 was held at The American Legion Post 82.  There was lots of Buck and a fair amount of Stuff to be had. The awesome Brandy Zdan opened the show. It had been a minute since I saw her perform, and it was a good reminder of how good she is.  She was playing songs from her forthcoming album which judging by her performance is going to be amazing.

It's time for our Featured Friday shuffle... The thing I love about playing random shuffles for my daily posts, is the weird things that happen with randomness. If you look at yesterday's shuffle and today's, it might be hard to believe that they came from the same playlist of songs.  Yesterday's shuffle was dominated by  EDM, industrial, punk, and jazz music. Today's is almost exclusively singer-songwriters (albeit each very unique and different).  I don't plan this - it just happens...

Let's shuffle!

Trending Thursday Morning Shuffle - Salvation with Horns Mix

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

Guess what, I'm running short on time again. It's been a rough week at the old day job.

It was great seeing Patrick Kinsley and a Fistful of Dollars last night at Dee's.  Also great seeing Lynn Taylor and the Barflies  and also Daniel Walker. Just a  fun night of music. I realized that over the course of the evening I got to see and talk to at least seven people who have performed at an E2TG Anniversary Show over the last two years.  The 7th Anniversary shows are coming in June, and the E2TG elves are hard at work getting ready to make the announcements.

Tonight is the Buck N Stuff CD Release show at the American Legion in Inglewood. This will be one for the book!

On to the Trending Thursday Shuffle.... strap yourself in because this one promises to be a wild ride.

Trending Tuesday Morning Shuffle - Dark Days Mix

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

Had a great time the Julie Christensen and Stone Cupid CD Release Show last night at the Basement. Renee Wahl opened and she was fantastic as always.  And as expected, Stone Cupid rocked the house.  Julie Christensen delivered some powerful vocals and the songs - originals and covers by Darrin Bradbury, Tim Easton, and Tom Waits and Kathleen Brennan hit all the right notes.  A Sad Clown is a wonderful followup to The Cardinal and it finds this veteran singer/songwriter/performer continuing to grow and develop.

I got home and was able to load three new albums into the shuffle.  Two of them show up here today. It is Tuesday and time to see what is "Trending" on E2TG.  We do that by shuffling up the "New Music" playlist.  Here is the result for today:

Featured Friday Morning Shuffle - Heart Grow Fonder Mix

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

I had a good time last night representing WXNA at the BriteHeart Birthday Bash last night.

BriteHeart’s mission is to engage, connect and empower citizens for positive change through voting and civic participation. BriteHeart connects individuals with organizations and organizations with resources.
#GetCivic
They had some great musical guests including Bill Eberle - whose new album is in our rotation.
The event was held in the East Nashville space of Helping Our Music Evolve - H.O.M.E..
This is a great new organization:
"HOME is a nonprofit community of music creators and music lovers. We’re here to help you with all things music-related. Whether you are a musician, producer, or music-biz professional, we have the space, resources, and networking opportunities you need to build your team and grow your career."
I also want to give a shout out to another organization that was represented at the event last night. Girls Write Nashville empowers youth in Nashville through mentorship, songwriting, production, and artistic community.  The organization was founded by Georgia English and Jen Starsinic.  I got to listen to some of the music - the music was impressive - made more so by reading that the youth making the music are in sixth and seventh grade.

Well - this difficult week is finally winding down... we have time for one final shuffle of the week.  This one features some of the fine, fine music that has come our way in recent weeks and months.

Dig!

Trending Thursday Morning Shuffle - You'll Dance to Anything Mix

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

Damn, I'm running short on time, but a couple of quick shout-outs.  First to Mark Huff for a fantastic set to celebrate the release of his new album Stars For Eyes at The 5 Spot.  Some of my favorite people played with him - Dave Coleman on guitar and Lisa Oliver Gray and Julie Chirstensen on back ground vocals.

Ben de la Cour has a great CD release show after that at The Basement.  Chris Moyse opened with his great songs, Becky Warren rocked the house, and Ben de la Cour sounded fantastic as always with a pretty rare full-band set.  The most special moment was at the end of the set when his band left the stage and Ben sang "Uncle Boudreaux Went To Texas". The first time through a couple of people sang along with the chorus, the next a few more, and then it seemed like the whole audience was singing along.

So- it's Thursday - time for Trending Tuesday.  A quick technical note - I discovered some problems with a new music playlist.  There are some older songs included in that playlist. Not sure what happened. The last time I had to recreate playlist I must have added a few extra tracks. No worries, I think it''s fixed now, plus even though a couple of these songs are not "NEW" they are still songs and they are still good. Let's shuffle:

Wild Wednesday Morning Shuffle - High Fives All Around Mix

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

So yesterday when I left work, the temperature in Nashville was right at 80 degrees. This morning it was in the low 40's and tonight it is going to be near freezing. In other words, it is early spring in middle Tennessee and for some reason I'm talking about the weather...

Two album release shows tonight (both albums I have - and will be -featuring on E2TG), and fortunately they are timed out perfectly so I can make both.  First up, is Mark Huff's release show for his new album Stars for Eyes. That show starts at six pm at The 5 Spot.  Then, the release show for The High Cost of Living Strange  the new album from Ben de la Cour. It kicks off at nine at The Basement. Chris Moyse and Becky Warren open that show.

We slide into the mid-week as we do almost every week with a "Wild Wednesday" shuffle. We have a pretty cool mixed bag of goodies for you today.  Let's shuffle:

Trending Tuesday Morning Shuffle - Please RSVP Mix

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

Marching on into the week. The news of the world continues to depress and terrify me. I continue to take comfort in good music and knowing there are good people in this world.

Speaking of good music, I am inching closer to beginning to reveal the bands/artists who will be playing the E2TG 7th Anniversary Residency (Thursdays in June at The 5 Spot). I will tell you that we will have a current E2TG Artist of the Year and a past E2TG Band of the Year. Plus lots of surprises. Stay tuned!  Once the lineup is revealed, I will not shut up about it.

It is Tuesday, and that is the day, we dig into our "New Music" playlist and shuffle it up to see what comes to the surface that we will say is "Trending" on E2TG.

Music City Monday Morning Shuffle - There I Said It Mix

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

It's April!  I'm back after a long weekend. Friday I attended Finally Friday at The Nashville Palace hosted by Whit Hubner and broadcast on a local radio station that is not the one where I have a show. A great line-up that included: The Dunwells (who I last saw at a Live on the Green during Americana Week - several years ago), Fats Kaplin and Kristi Rose (who are always awesome), King Corduroy, and Great Peacock.  Saturday, I checked out Kevin Gordon and Stuffy Shmitt at The 5 Spot and then The Josephines (from Bowling Green), Supersuckers, and Drivin N Cryin at The Basement East.  Little Joe is playing guitar with Drivin N Cryin.  Warner Hodges joined both Supersuckers and Drivin N Cryin on several songs. It was raucous and loud and fun as hell.

It's Monday - time to delve into our Music City Monday playlist (which can be found on Spotify). Today's shuffle spans decades and all manner of music from Nashville artists and bands...
