A busy week for new music, and that means a jam packed Featured Friday Playlist. If you want, you can check out the whole list which is embedded just below or you can follow along all week as I recap the list in five segments. Part 1 is down below the jump covering the first 15 songs.
It is also a good time to tell you that much of the music featured here is available on Bandcamp and that today Bandcamp is waiving revenue sharing to put more of the proceeds of purchases directly in the hands of the artists you and I love. If you love independent music like I do, support the artists in the most direct way you are able. Bandcamp is one of the better avenues.
Featured Friday Playlist
1. "Pizza & Drugs" by Darrin Bradbury
So excited that two-time E2TG Artist of the Year Darrin Bradbury is releasing new music. His second single of 2021 was released early this year, and it is a fresh reminder of why I fell in love with his songs nearly 8 years ago, when I was first listening to some of his early collections of demos. I still believe he is one of the best and most original songwriters working today.
2. "Take Good Care" by Megan Palmer
I believe I first met Megan Palmer when she was backing Darrin, but I have may have seen her earlier backing Tim Easton. Palmer has long combined her music career with her healthcare career, and this new single, for the first time, brings together the two worlds.
3. "One More Mile" by Falcon Ranchero
Next up, we have the debut single from Nashville's own Falcon Ranchero which features our friend Braden Land. Great stuff.
4. "People Have the Power" by Tomas Doncker & The True Groove All-Stars
Long-time E2TG favorite, True Groove Records founder, and New York no-wave legend Tomas Doncker just recently released this scintillating cover of the Patti Smith classic which has received a stamp of approval from Ms. Smith herself.
5. "Hug You All on the Other Side" by Natchez Tracers
Long awaited new single from Nashville band Natchez Tracers which features Josh Womack and Lewis Stubbs. Great song.
6. "Do It Yourself" by The Cucumbers
From a recently released compilation from 1980s New Jersey power pop band The Cucumbers. The band features the husband wife duo of Jon Fried and Deena Shoshkes. Deena has been an E2TG favorite with her solo work for several years.
7. "All I'm Saying" by Jon Worthy
Nashville singer-songwriter and E2TG favorite Jon Worthy dropped this wonderful new single to day.
8. "I Fed Animals" by Volk
Nashville duo Volk are back with their second single of the year. I first caught this band when they were backing Bill Eberle back in the day.
9. "Scaryoke" by Dingzui
Nashville's Dingzui follow-up their 2020 album Italics with their take on a pandemic/quarantine song.
10. "Lightning Strikes Twice" by Ted Russell Kamp
Today is release day for Ted Russell Kamp's new album Solitaire. Today, we have this song from the album which features E2TG favorite Don Gallardo.
11. "When We Lay Him Down Beside Her" by Kentucky John Clay
Next up, we have the new single from Kentucky John Clay - who is known for drumming for the likes of Nick Dittmeier and Colter Wall. His 2020 album was a tribute to Blaze Foley.
12. "Whenever" by The Licata Brothers
We next have our second song featured from these California brothers who have been making music together since 2010 when they were 12 and 9 years old. I recently found out that they have played some shows and done some work with Yosi Mesbah who lived in Nashville for a few years in the mid-2010s and was part of the circle of songwriters I followed. I love how small the musical world can be.
13. "The Hardest Part" by Whiskey in the Pines
Next up, we have a track from a new acoustic release by this Florida based band. The new album Acoustic Sessions from Gasoline Alley features acoustic versions of songs on their most recent LP Sunshine from the Blue Cactus - which was also recorded by Gasoline Alley Studios.
14. "Find a Way" by IV Reed
Next up, we have the new single from this upper Michigan rap artist.
15. "Ship" by Doctor Lo
New Orleans singer-songwriter with a single from his forthcoming new album (due in June) called Claiborne Avenue. Doctor Lo (Faber) is the former frontman/guitarist for the band God Street Wine. A great tune to take us out for the week.
NO VIDEO PLAYLIST TODAY
(Note: My decision to not do a Video Playlist on Friday is two-fold. The esoteric answer goes back to the reason I started the Video Playlist in the first place. Years ago, I would embed videos (or songs) after each song listed. A faithful listener said he would prefer to be able to play them all together while he was working. So, I started using the playlist feature of YouTube. On Fridays now, I'm featuring music from my special Featured Friday Spotify playlist - so the music can be heard that way. On a more practical level, it is a matter of not having enough time.)
(Note 2: Currently, E2TG doesn't really do much featuring of music videos. I do know a lot of artists put great effort into making great videos. As I stated above, the Video Playlist wasn't really meant as a way to feature videos per se. That being said, I do get a lot of requests to feature videos on E2TG and currently, there is not much I can do. I would love to find a way to have a video feature post now and again, but at this point, I really can't thinking of adding new content without taking something away or at least improving the time it takes to do what I do. But, I am always thinking).
