Monday Morning Music Shuffle - Super Couple Mix

We had some bad storms roll through between 1:00 and 2:00a.m. which wouldn't be so bad if I didn't have to wake up at 4:30. Blah.... But, lack of sleep is part of the rock 'n' roll lifestyle right? Whatever...

Here we go... part of the fun of letting the magical mystery shuffle option pick my morning music playlist is when theme emerge out of the randomness of it all.  Or perhaps, the theme is all in my head... does it matter?

Actually a couple of thematic things happened today, but the overarching them as expressed in the subtitle of today's post is Super Couples of Music....

First Super Couple is George and Tammy.  The classic (We're Not) The Jet Set name drops Rome, Georgia; Athens, Texas; and Paris, Tennessee. Explore more about this song by clicking the picture below:

Super Couple #2 has back-to-back tracks on today's shuffle - which make's sub-theme #1 - The Chris and Tina show:

1st up is Take Me to the River is the classic cover of the Al Green classic song by Chris and Tina's earlier band called Talking Heads - maybe you've heard of them.

2nd up for the Chirs and Tina show is the 2001 version of the 1981 hit single Genius of Love by Chris and Tina's later band - Tom Tom Club.

More on those two tracks below:

Our final Super Couple and fulfilling our second sub-theme (The Genius Theme) comes from
Andrea and Mark of the band MAKAR with the title track from their latest Funeral Genius.  Take a longer look at this track below:

Friday Morning Music Shuffle - Cool Operator Mix

How is it, in life, that you can feel on top of the world one minute and as low as low can be, the next?  How is it, in life, that you can't avoid meeting assholes? How is it, in life, that we keep going when all signs point to giving up?  How is it, in life, that we forget that we are all in this thing together?

Urg... just some negativity but hey, it's Friday and lots of wonderful things are happening.  Got a tweet back form a founding member of the Manhattan Transfer yesterday, I'm meeting new and wonderfully talented bands almost every day, and just in today's music shuffle and nice fortuitous coincidental timing...

The Clash were for a time the greatest band in the world.  London Calling was and remains one of the best albums of all time (imho).  Their self-titled album is another great one.  I'll admit, I've loved the energy and sound of the album well before I really understood what any of the songs were about.

This morning's shuffle begins with White Man in Hammersmith Palais  and it's a great example of the reggae/punk sound the band perfected.

Just one other song on today's music shuffle. And this is where the fortuitous timing comes into play.

On his solo debut, Mike Watt (Minutemen, fIREHOSE) brought in a who's who of alt-rock and laid down some truly awesome stuff.  The second to the last song of the album (Ball-Hog or Tugboat?) is a cover of a Funkadelic song called Maggot Brain. This version features some killer bass work, a Watt spiel and J Macias doing a virtuoso take on Eddie Hazel's guitar solo and it also features Bernie Worrell reprising his keyboard work from the original.

And then....  came this news that Watt is going to play with Bernie Worrell Orchestra and perform Maggot Brain and Super Stupid.

Here's the album which leads off with the original version:

And here is what's Ball-Hog or Tugboat?:

And sad news comes as we learn of the passing of the legendary Etta James...

Band of the Week - Year 2 Week 7 or is it 8 - The Kirby Sewell Band

The Kirby Sewell Band are a sultry, smooth blues-influenced band from Canada.  They have a diverse range of  influences without watering down any of them.  Kirby Sewell has a great voice and the band delivers a tight mix of Americana, Country, Blues and Rock.  Their cover of Def Leppard's Pour Some Sugar on Me is cool.  Here listen:

The title track from their album Bought Myself  a Hammer is smooth grooving blues number that just feels familiar.

They are on Facebook and Twitter

Here is an earlier album -The Blues Found Me.

Thursday Morning Music Shuffle - Please Pass the Jam Mix

The shuffle occurred in the morning.  The post in the afternoon. Not a cover shuffle, but one very sweet cover song... Wild ride this morning. Here goes:

The first song is dedicated to Rex Silo - toking on some cathedral mountains... "they say he got crazy once and tried to touch the sun." that Colorado Rocky Mountain High - John Denver. Oh yeah...

Next up - yeah yeah, I should probably rename the blog The End Men to the Ground blah blah blah... truth is I'm really digging on this album right now... so put your sorry's in a sack... or something...  Anyway, today I listened to They're All Gonna Cost Ya which features some mighty fine vocal dueling from Matthew and Frittata.

Finally, just before I listened to the second End Men track of the morning (see the previous post), I came up with a cover song and man what a sweet sound....  Erin Dickins was a founding member of The Manhattan Transfer.  She recently connected with me on Twitter and so today I offer up a song from her new album Nice Girls.  This one is a cover of a song originally performed by Julie London and co-written by Bobby Troup (who was married to Julie London).  From my childhood, I know they will forever be nurse Dixie McCall and
Dr. Joe Early from Emergency!.   Anyway, the song is a smooth jazzy pop song called Nice Girls Don't Stay for Breakfast.

Busy, Busy, Busy

Ahhhh.... I have a great morning music shuffle, and I'll get to it soon, but right now, I'm running behind on things. A two and a half hour meeting will do that... blah... In the meantime, just so you don't forget all about me... When I got to my office, a song came up that I had to just sit and listen to again. The song was part of my morning shuffle earlier in the week, but it is so damn good, I just wanted to throw it out there in video form. Check it out (see the link below if you have to have this album... and you HAVE to have this album!) ______________________________________________________________________________________________ Affiliated Links:

Wednesday Morning Music Shuffle - Zombie Apocalypse Mix

It really isn't a question of if... it's a question of when... are you prepared... the CDC has some tips.

And but so, we move forward.  Colder air has arrived, but it's not too bad.

You may have heard or noticed that some sites including Wikipedia are blacked-out today in protest of the proposed SOPA regulations. Here's some information about SOPA/PIPA.  One thing that sucks is that in the three or four seconds Wikipedia comes up, I noticed that the article of the day is about Nick Drake. So, tomorrow, be sure to click back to the Nick Drake article.

On we go...

First up, Stephen Malkmus & the Million Dollar Bashers cover Dylan's Maggie's Farm for the I'm Not There Motion Picture Soundtrack. (check out this very cool soundtrack below).

Next is another awesome, trippy track from the forthcoming Beyond Beyond is Beyond compilation from Bang Bang Boogaloo. This time, we have Cincinnati-based Buffalo Killers with a track called Lily of the Valley. Below you can check out their album 3.

Ear to the Ground favorite Don Ryan is next with another great song from his Tangle Town album.  This one is called Crystal Star.  Use this as an excuse to check out Tangle Town...

And finally, via Soundcloud comes a song called A Narrow Sky from 80s era Nashville legends Raging Fire:

And check out their classic EP A Family Thing below.
