This weekend was supposed to be the Magnolia Roads American Roots Hoedown V here in Nashville - with a pre-party at Dee's on Friday and the main event all-day Saturday at The 5 Spot. I was going to be a co-emcee and it was going to be an epic good time.

Like so many events, COVID-19 threw a monkey wrench in the plans, but the good folks at Magnolia Roads aren't the type to say "quit", and so they show will go on as a Virtual Festival via the powerful Vertual Festival site.   More details to come, but I will still be co-emceeing virtually via technology that I don't understand.  I guess that means I need to do something with my hair. In any event, stay tuned for more details.

Wednesday Morning Shuffle

A couple of recent releases. A song from an album we featured last year, plus a couple of stone cold classics to round out this mid-week shuffle...

"Road Dog" by Mark Hummel (from Wayback Machine)

For the second day in a row, the shuffle brings up a track from Mark Hummel's recently released Wayback Machine album. This one is an original song. Enjoy. 

"25 Years Behind" by The Revenue Man (from 25 Years Behind)

This may be our first official listen to The Revenue Man (aka Glenn Brown)'s album which came out in March.  Today we have the title. Track.  The Revenue Man is an accomplished singer-songwriter and musician. Born in the Northeast and living most of his life in California, he now resides in Tennessee - which is where the album was recorded. 

"Shine on Baby" by Artie Tobia (from Driven)

We featured this album in 2019, and it is nice to dig into it again.  Tobia is based in New York state and this song is a tribute to the Allman Brothers Band.

"Get Down on It" by Kool & the Gang (from The Nice Guys - Original Motion Picture ST)

The Nice Guys is a 2016 movie staring Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling, but can we talk about Kool and the Gang?  There is just something about their music that I just love. It was a big part of my younger years. This song was included on their 1981 album Something Special. 

"Freight Train" by Elizabeth Cotten (from Roots of the Grateful Dead)

I first learned about Elizabeth Cotten through a song on fIREHOSE's 2nd album If'n. They misspelled her name "Cottton", but nonetheless, my curiosity was piqued and I learned about this blues and folk musician who developed her own style of guitar playing called "Cotten picking".
