Featured Friday Playlist
"The Day Tom Petty Died" by Dolour (Shane Tutmarc)
As mentioned, we premiered the video for the new Dolour single this morning. Now, the single leads off our featured Friday Playlist for the week. A great homage to the late, great leader of The Heartbreakers.
"Stranger" by Cold Equations
You may or may not know the name Cold Equations, but if you are a long-time E2TG reader, you know the name of the man behind that name. We first met Drew Kohl back in 2014 at the same open mic where we met Jon Latham - although we had crossed paths with him a few times before that at Fran's Eastside. Anyway, while his earlier solo releases were more in the Americana realm - on this new release - he moves effortlessly into a more indie/alternative arena. His incredible songwriting and unique voice shines through. Kohl is also a member of Dirt Reynolds and Slump Test and has recorded recently with E2TG favorite Paul Zografi.
"For My Health" by Griffin Winton
It is great to hear new music from Griffin Winton. Winton is part of E2TG Band of the Year - The Big Dumb. He is an insightful songwriter and a top-notch musician. To me, his breakout came at a Drive By Truckers tribute where he stole the show with an incendiary performance. This new single really resonated with me.
"Mona Lisa of Guitar Town" by Maynard and the Musties
The long-running band led by Joe Maynard originated in Brooklyn and relocated to Nashville a few years back. Maynard has (hopefully) temporarily relocated back up north, but the new album, Grown-Up Things, is definitely a Nashville affair. This time around The Musties are an incredible collection of Nashville's elite: Kenny Vaughan, Mark Robinson, Eddie Lange, Rebecca Weiner Tompkins, Billy Contraras, David Conrad, Pete Pulkrakbek, and Jeff McGinness. The album was produced by Mark Robinson. Front and center are the songs of Joe Maynard (with one song written by Weiner Tompkins).
"Cast Iron Pansexual" by Adeem the Artist
We first encountered Adeem at a New Faces Night at The Basement when they were performing as Kyle Adem. I have always been impressed by their songwriting. This is the title track of their new album which examines the intersection of sexuality and identify as a resident of the South.
"Goodbye Nicolina" by Steve Almaas
While, I was first introduced to the music of Steve Almaas with his 1980s band Beat Rodeo - who had a unique take on the then burgeoning mix of new wave and country. A later found out that he started as part of the pioneering Minneapolis punk band - The Suicide Commandos - who have reunited a few times in recent years. He has also recorded several solo albums including his latest - Everywhere You've Been - which was released today. I love following an artist for a long time and having the chance to explore their musical output backwards and forwards.
"You're In Love With Junk" by The Problem With Kids Today
This is the new band from New Haven, Connecticut featuring Tate and Silas. Their new band is a trio, and this is the first single from the forthcoming debut album.
"The Storms Are on the Ocean" by Jason Ringenberg; Kristi Rose
Rhinestoned! The new Jason Ringenberg album is out and it features a duet with the incomparable Kristi Rose. It is always a treat to hear Jason and Kristi sing together.
"Just Give Me Everything" by Susan Anders
Nashville's Susan Anders' 13 Women is out today, too - just in time for Women's History Month. This opening track is inspired by Helen Keller and her teacher Annie Sullivan.
"Better Way" by The Wild West
And we close with a brand new California supergroup - featuring some artist who we have featured before including Amilia K. Spicer and Tawny Ellis - plus Pi Jacobs, Heather Anne Lomax, Deb Morrison, and Mandra Mosher. A wonderful debut, and I hope to hear more soon.
