Hey, it is Pledge Week at Nashville's All-Volunteer Community Radio Station, WXNA. I am thrilled to have a small part in this valuable community resource. WXNA recently announced that we are moving our studio early next year, so one of goals of this Fall's Pledge Drive is to raise funds to defray the cost of that move.
As always, WXNA can be heard at 101.5FM in Nashville (as I like to say, within the Briley Parkway loop) and it can be streamed anywhere at wxnafm.org or through the TuneIn app.
If you want to pledge your support, contact WXNA at 615-933-9962 or go on-line at wxnafm.org
This time around there are four levels of giving (and remember you can make it a monthly donation to spread the cost out). There are some great rewards at each level - including a hoodie, an iron-on patch, and at the top level, an invitation to our exclusive Studio-warming party when we move into the new studio.
Meanwhile, it is Wednesday and that means it is "Wild Wednesday" at WXNA. I think this shuffle lives up to the billing...
"I Got Drunk" by The Buddies
If you take Smoking Flowers, add in a bit of Justin and the Cosmics, add a dash of Welcome to Ashley/Black Vincent, you get The Buddies. A flat out great rock and roll band. Formed in Nashville and now split between the Music City and places further north, the band put on a killer show the last time they regrouped in Nashville. This is from the self-titled album. An anthem?
"Hedgehog Mushroom" by David Lord
Next up, we have some recently released dreamy, experimental jazz from David Lord. This track came to me via Chris Schlarb - whose music we featured a few years ago. It is one of a number of new projects that Schlarb has been producing and collaborating on. This is a fantastic track, and one I need to keep in mind the next time we do an instrumental show on Double Shot.
"Under the Big Black Sun" by X
The title track from album number 3 by the Los Angeles band. One of my favorite bands of all time, I am so glad I got the chance to see them earlier this year.
"Play for Today" by Belle and Sebastian
Next up, British band Belle and Sebastian with a track from their 2015 album Girls in Peacetime Want to Dance. Belle and Sebastian fulfill my appreciation of British pop music. They were one of the first bands that broke through my period of not paying much attention to current music for several years - with albums like Dear Catastrophe Waitress and If Your Feeling Sinister. This track features Dee Dee Penny of the American band Dum Dum Girls.
"Looking for My Woman" by J.W. Warren
Keeping up, this shuffles wild, genre-hopping, we have a track from the wonderful folks at Music Maker Relief Foundation - from the compilation, We Are the Music Makers. J.W. Warren was born in Alabama in the 1920s. He once dated Big Mama Thornton. When he met Music Maker founder Tim Duffy, J.W. said he had given up music, but he was convinced to records some songs. He was a member of Music Maker from 1995 until his death in 2003. Music Maker not only brings attention to but actively supports on a basic level many of the legacy roots artists who helped build American music in the 20th Century.
"They Came Down" by The Pull of Autumn
This is a really fantastic track from The Pull of Autumn - who are part of our "New Music" playlist. Their self-titled album is out and it is fantastic. The Pull of Autumn - you may recall - is a supergroup of sorts featuring former members of British new wave band Fáshiön, Rhode Island's Johanna’s House of Glamour, and Fred Abong - a founding member of Belly and an early member of Throwing Muses. I am really digging what this new band is doing.
"What You Wanna Do" by The Reivers
Next, we have a track from Pop Beloved - the 1991 fourth album by The Reivers. The Reivers were an Austin, Texas band that formed in 1984 as Zeitgeist before being forced to change their name - due to another band claiming that name. This album marked the band's return to independent label DB Records after released two albums on a major label.
"Native Stepson" by Sonny Landreth
We close out the shuffle with a blistering live performance of a track from South of I-10 by Louisiana blues guitarist Sonny Landreth. This performance comes from a Live at World Cafe session. Another that needs to be on the next Double Shot instrumentals show. What an awesome way to close things out on this cold and dreary Wednesday.
